In this episode:
• What’s on Scott’s pedalboard?

Please do this weekly. It is the most genuine form of discussion. The fact Scott didn't like the "gear of the week" is great for discussion. Also the blind hearing test was brilliant. You should do that with different effects, maybe not weekly but monthly or bi-weekly. Have a good one, cheers!

I've got to say I dip in to the channel every so often , this is by far my favourite thing I've seen on the youtube channel. This was a good move. I like the diversity of topics in this format. To Scott saying he'd quite like something more like an MX stomp but with more knobs & less menu diving. I have one that's got 84 different models in it lots of knobs and separate footswitches AND you can pick one up , used, for about the same price as a single modern day pedal! It's .... The line 6 M13! It really is a half way point between individual pedals and MX stomp world, which isn't a surprise given its place in the timeline of Line 6 development. It's saved me a fortune in individual pedals. You should try one, with the absolute confidence that if you don't get on with it you can sell it for the same price you bought it, nothing really to lose but the postage cost.

27:00 Scott: What you want is the HX Effects. More switches, same effects as the HX Stomp (just no amp modeling), and the editing is much more like editing on individual pedals. Just touch the switch that controls the "pedal" you want to edit, and now you can adjust its settings using the knobs on the unit. No menu diving required, and Ian can help you with presets since it's still an HX unit.

Very enjoyable video/podcast (and I don't usually watch 1h20+ YT content). I've been a pedal junkie for over 10 years, so particularly enjoyed the Octave Pedal Shootout. One point of constructive criticism: it would have much more enriching and easy to follow, if, when revealing which octaver was which in the sequence, a brief replay of the pedal in question was heard. It would add a minute or so to the overall duration, but would be worth it. Hoping you'll try this in future shootouts. Keep up the great work, guys.

I love you guys talking on the regular pod channel and I loved you talking over here. The knowledge we can take of the two of you is freaking amazing. The blind test was awesome, gear talk kills me everytime (btw, an episode about iem and headphones would be super dope!), maybe something like a one time every month instagram questions answering would make it a bit more interactive. Gear of the week seemed a bit of, maybe something that I wouldn’t do on regular bases, maybe when something new and special gets released ore smth. The length was super dope, helps people really dig in. Looking forward to everything coming, gonna support everything.

I'm with Scott on the Multi-Effects. I can't stand having to scroll through the menus and stuff, I like to keep it simple. I had an HX Stomp for a while, but I ended up selling it. It was great to have because of all the options, but I spent more time on the floor messing with the settings than I did just playing. It did help me discover which effects I truly loved and needed on my board. Now I have 7 or so pedals on my board but it's simple and streamlined and works for me.

Really enjoyed the pedal shootout. I perceived that the OC derived pedals sounded similar enough to be a was, with the exception of the behringer which was hollow maybe due to the mids switch. The pearl surprised me, I liked that one. Not a fan of the HX octaver but I can see a place for it. Super cool thanks for the content guys

I've gone down the octave rabbit hole. There are some out there I still want to try: the Korg/Yamaha oct-1, and that wild 6 knob Exar oc-04 octavium... Most octaves aim for that boss sound though. I think there's more room for octave experimentation in the pedal space.

The Broughton Synth Voice is one of my holy grail octave sounds and it’s specifically for the non-octave (unison pitch) synth sound. Bumping a bit of that up can take a bass line (especially in a pop or hip hop/ contemporary jazz context) and send it into extreme groove territory.

I watched Scott's demo of a Darkglass distortion pedal, which cost $499. So I was interested and was shopping. My brother, who is also a bass player and uses pedals, recommended for me the ZOOM B6 multi-effect unit which has two Darkglass pedals integrated plus a ton of effects for $499. It works for me and you guys are making some great points on both sides of the choice. I am actually using an Ampeg Optocomp running into the ZOOM unit because the compression is always on for me.

I started out on the regular guitar, and recently just got a bass. The thing I love about it so far is that it feels more plug and play. I really liked this format, and feel it would translate to the audio only podcast very well. You both have amazing insight into the instrument, entertain with incredible banter, and make it seem more like a candid conversation, rather than a planned topic filled session. I am excited to hear that more playing will be included...it's what I come hoping for. As far as the pedal vs. multi-fx...Icurrently use a Zoom b3n . I've always gravitated to the bass processors, starting 25ish years ago with the Digitech BP50... as for me they were always the better bang for my budget, and much like Ian said, it sounds good to me, which mattered most. I may not know what I'm missing sticking with the multi, but I've never had complaints about tone, and once I got used to the interface it became the perfect balance of stomp box, amp/cab modeling. Again, this may be long winded, but I truly appreciate what the channel does, and look forward to how you continue to adapt and grow the brand.

I've got a Boss ME-50B multi-effects board. It's nowhere near as versatile as modern modelling units like the HX Stomp but it has most stuff you're likely to need and you can program it sequentially for a set list if you want to. It's solidly made (aluminium I think). You can get them second hand for less than £100 so they're perfect if you want variety on a budget. I initially got mine to experiment and see what individual pedals would be most useful to me but haven't needed to replace it.

Hey, Guys! Just want to say that I love every single bit of this. It is truly amazing! One thing I would love to see that may be just for me, lol, is that I would love to see a praise and worship bassist. I know that almost every genre is covered, and I have taken notes from all of it, but getting into the contemporary praise and worship area would be awesome for me. To be able to hear from an instructor that gets into what would serve a congregation by leading behind a bass, and how to fill different types of moments, and items like that would be an amazing thing to see in the SBL realm! I started playing about 12 years ago for church, and this is where I began. Thanks, yall!

I haven’t tried all of those but I got the Foxrox Octron 3 (on Ian’s recommendation) and it is AMAZING. So simple, one knob for octave up level, one for direct level and one for octave down level, and a choice of two sounds on each of the octaves. Very analogue. The tone just works so well, much less synthy than an OC2 or POG.

Love the podcast, the longer format and having you guys just let loose and chat about whatever comes up is great. A few people I follow on here (unrelated to bass) keep their podcasts on separate channels because the KZfaq algorithm apparently doesn't like the longer format videos so they end up getting less views. Can't hurt to try though, the podcast will keep its following whether it's here or elsewhere! I prefer audio only to listen when I'm driving or working, etc.

First of all love the podcast format. I really enjoy the discussion. Also, some boss pedals have rubber pads installed under the foot switch to dampen the click. So your old boss pedals aren't worn out, they just have rubber in there, check it out.

Brilliant video - objective. Well on the ball.... As someone who's built pedals for the last 20 years pretty much just for myself, after cloning many of the most bass-friendly O/D & Fuzz pedals that I can.... There's a bit of hype out there in the pedal market 🙂

Do ya think? Yet another esoteric attitude about a more tangible subject. Equal parts actual and perceived, where preconceptions and bias dictate belief as strongly as the evidence before you.this This was meant as complimentary to your well grounded note on hype. In case I was sounding more hype than truthful.

Great, youtube cast, loved it. You never covered a mix of both pedal boards. I run hx stomp with 7 pedals and di. Tuner compressor, hx stomp to di. Oct, autowah, overdrive, fuzz and chorus are effects looped in hx stomp. Great freedom of sound. Love switching presets then little tweeks easy. A pit big for ian.

I'm probably in the minority but I LOVED the HX Stomp one. It's not like an Oc2 at all. It's smooth, it's thick, and it's subby without being synthy, and for a lot of the stuff I do, especially more ambient stuff, it's prefect! Or at least I personally prefer how it sits in the mix in that context

I had owned an EBS Octabass pedal (didn't really know how to use it at the time...), and had sold it. I've got the MXR Vintage Bass Octave (and LOVE it), fixing to buy an HX Stomp XL...and it'll be nice to have the additional Octave pedal sound! :D

Hey there, thx for the shootout=) it was very helpful! I have a question though... How is the tracking on these Octavers (for example OC-3) for notes on a 5. String like B or A#?

I have an HX One and I like it. The size and power requirements are well suited for a small board, and one effect at-a-time is fine for me.

Damn, Ian, I've never heard an Octabvre sound so bad and I play one regularly. 😂 I guess it wasn't designed to give you the most bottom end, but more of an edgy synth sound, after all.

One suggestion for someone just starting with effect is a Zoom B1 four. No, it's no where near as good as an HX or other end multi effect unit. But it's relatively low cost, very simple to use and is a great practice tool (looper, small amount of drum patterns). You can play with each effect and vary the parameters to learn a bit about how that effect works. I'm sure the experienced pedal users will quickly point out all the things that could be much better. However, it's a decent place to start and there are a number of useable effects in it. Add in the ability to do short 30 seconds loops and play with drum patterns and it's a pretty versatile tool. I also used it as a front end for my audio interface device when I played online over Soundjack.

Totally agree with you: my top tip for a B1 Four is to use the ToneLib-Zoom editor on your PC to set up the Zoom. I did try Zoom's own editor but it didn't work on my PC, whereas the ToneLib editor (it's free BTW) works just great; and IMHO has a better UI than the official Zoom editor. If you own a B1 Four and haven't tried a PC editor, do it! No scrolling on tiny screens, can be adjusted while in use, etc., etc.

I spent about $1400 on my board that completely replaced my amp and FX rig. It's huge and heavy but I don't have to move it either. All discreet pedals including input buffer, volume pedal, pre-amp, boost, octave, chorus, drive, envelope filter, reverb/delay, Freeze (TY Scott), and post FX DI with cab sim all on a vintage Holeyboard Wide w/custom paint job.

Bought a Helix Stomp XL to try and consolidate my pedalboard and was a little intimidated by all of the settings, and the presets were useless for bass. I got a basic sound going, but went to Ian's page and purchased the Signature Pack. Amazing set of patches there to help me get going. Thank you, Ian and Scott for all you do.

I have the same 3leaf Audio Octabvre that's on this video and it's on my main board for two reasons: 1. the option to solo the sub and 2. the compact size for a pedal with two footswitches. Also, in a band context I can't hear any difference between it and my OC-2.

I use a Boss GT 10-B mainly as it is pretty easy to learn and operate... the sounds are good, and it has less noise than a chain of a lot of individual pedals. Can store 200 user made patches too. Does a lot of things well, with very little hassles, and overall cost is a fraction what a dozen different pedals costs. After having even a modest chain of individual pedals with all the power supplies and patch cables needed.. it was just a pain in the ass. The GT 10B is one power cable... 1 or 2 outputs to amps, plug in the bass...then just turn the power on. and away you go.

This was brilliant. Please do more! The octave pedal shoot out was fascinating... good to see the 40-year old OC-2 still up there with the best of them. Would a compressor pedal shoot out be feasible? A synth pedal face off would be awesome too. Oh, and do more.
