It always blows me away that this stuff was so far ahead of its time - the intro for example is pure industrial grunge dance that took 30 years post this track to hit the mainstream.

WHO sounded this whacked out in 1974??? Only Devo and umm, The Residents Not Available LP from 1974. Smart Patrol 2 recorded in November 1974, Smart Patrol 1 recorded in May 1974.

I've got "Sing If You're Glad to Be Devo" / "Devonia" on vinyl (I was never able to get a straight answer as to whether it was a bootleg or an "official", pre-WB release by Devo themselves) with a version of Smart Patrol that's very similar to this... (far closer to this than what's on "Duty now for the future") Still, I don't think I've ever heard it. Thanks for posting!

I started liking devo when I was still in diapers. I remember the first time I saw what they looked like and I thought they looked old( but 4 some odd reason, swore mark mothersbaugh was going to be my future husband. I guess I had daddy issues.) If anything, I had a better shot with Gerry. Lol! Haha, cause his wife is like 30. Back 2 my point-I knew they weren't like old old, but to a 5 or 6 yr old kid a 21 yr old person looks old. So guys in their 30s looked really old. Then when I was a teenager And into my 20s I didn't view them as old anymore, more just like normal adults that are older then me but far from old. Now that im 40, when I look at devo, EVEN AT THE AGE THEY ARE RIGHT NOW AS I TYPE THIS; and yes, I get their in their 70s but 4 some reason I cant help but see the kid in them. Forget if I'm watching clips from the era of when I first thought they looked old, and the years prior Back to their humble beginnings. I look at those clips now and say, "holy shit, these guys look like babies!" So its weird how its like they have aged backwards to me. I wish I can age backwards too.

"suburban robots that monitor reality," so i can HEAR them say that almost forty years later than when muthersbaugh jumped on my table on Union Street in 1982 at Mabuhay Gardens. I felt the sensibility and watched dudes with wireless equipment rampage through the night, and didn't need those ever-so-clever werdz. they made the right kind of noise at the most appropriate time to feel the nihilistic anarchy that was needed. a heineken, two gimlets, and three christmas trees. (then, of course, they had to, yes, wait for it.. Whip It: RIP Devo as alternative rock- straight to the where-are-they-now catalogue following THAT wonderful career choice) But i'll bet the money was fun to spend!!
