I explore the disused railway from the village of Yealmpton in the South Hams to the City of Plymouth in Devon. I look at abandoned bridges, restored bridges and cuttings and follow the course from rural village to the City.

Hi... Great video, but thought I'd point out one error at 11:25... the rail line didn't cut across where the big house (Stokenham) is... it followed the line of the road (Hazel Grove). Stokenham was built while the railway was in operation and Hazel Grove was built in the late 60s after the track was lifted. The railings at Station House, while original GWR railings, were not there when the line was in operation as they were added in the '80s when Station House was built on the site of the original platform. Not trying to be critical... just want to preserve accuracy.

Thank you for watching, commenting and for pointing this error out. Always good to get feedback and corrections from viewers who know the local layout and history better than I do - much appreciated. I will pin 📌 your comment for other viewers to see. Thanks again, Paul 👍🙂

Just come across your video and I used to live in the old Station Master's house at Plymstock, where the line split between Turnchapel and Yelmpton. It is the big white with the red roof that over looks Pomphlett Roundabout. My dad built that house and the original building is still inside as the core, but well hidden. We did find many railway related items in the shed out the back, including the original Plymstock signs. The line was used for freight from Blue Circle Cement until about 1985. They then took the bridge out going over the Ride, as too many lorries where hitting it. Going down the Laira bridge, the part fenced off with corrugated sheets under the road bridge in currently boat storage. Back in the 1980's when I lived there, it was just a tunnel doing under the road bridge that merged up with the Cattedown Rail track on the other side.

Fascinating walk & information. I had no idea there was marble in that area.

Yes, it is one of the very few places in the UK where marble comes to the surface. Can't remember if I said it in the video or not, but some of it was used in St. Paul's Cathedral in London for marble pillars. The River Yealm valley is very picturesque. Thank you so much for watching and commenting faith 🙂👍

Hello. Thanks for doing this. I think a substantial section of the trackbed from (approximately) Elburton to Steer Point is now an official cycle/footpath. It passes through the site of Brixton Road station where the building is now a much altered private dwelling. I’m not sure exactly where it starts and finishes. There is an excellent history of the line, The Yealmpton Branch by A.R. Kingdom. Tony Kingdom is a well-known local railway historian.

You can actually walk around 70% of the entire route of this former railway. Lots of sections of the route missing from this video. Much of it is publicly accessible but if you're prepared to be stealthy, hike off trail and over some not so public land, there are miles of track bed to walk through remote country areas, still with ballast in place.

Hello! I never trespass in my videos. I am not an urbexer, and will only stick to rights of way, as marked on the OS maps. That really isn't what my channel is about. Otherwise, I would be encouraging my viewers to trespass too. A lot of the places that the railway went through are now on private land. Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers, Paul.

Just like to add that Billacombe station building has been saved and is presently being rebuilt at nearby Marsh Mills on the former GWR Plymouth to Tavistock line which now forms part of the sustrans 'Drakes Trail' part of the Devon coast to coast (route 27) cycle way

That's really interesting. I used to live very close to the Plym Valley Railway and the Plym Bridge Halt (current terminus of the PVR) in Plymouth. I didn't know that Billacombe Station had been saved - good to know! I hope to feature Plym Valley Railway on a future video. Thanks for the information and for watching and commenting. Paul 👍🙂

Hi Paul, Enjoyed watching this one. I dug out my old OS maps and this branch is right on the bottom of my Dartmoor map, in fact Yealmpton is included but it is off the border, so I couldnt see the end of the branch, nonetheless Railmaps online filled any gaps. There are other old branches at the Plymouth end. From my map I was able to trace the river up onto Dartmoor to Yealm head at 1350' The Laira bridge looks in really good condition, they have made a great job of the restauration, the cycle way looks very useful as well. The Lime Kilns and caves was also very interesting, a bit of searching tells me they were finally shut in 2000, I will ask my sister if she knows anything about them. I enjoyed seeing the old maps and photos. In your outro you mention creative commons. I had a look to see what I could find but it didnt seem very user friendly, I'd be interetested to understand how to use that website. All the best!!

Oh gosh, is this railway line ever needed now! The traffic out of and into Plymouth on the A374 (the tarmac artery to and from the South Hams) is horrendous! They should reopen it and have a Park & Ride terminus near Yealmpton. I can't remember if I mentioned it in the video, but Yealmpton is one of the very few places in the UK where Marble (Green) was mined and quarried - you can see it glistening on the bed of the River Yealm. It is a lovely walk, and the river estuary by Steer Point is magical! Thanks again David, take care, Paul.

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland. That was brilliant! What a fantasic video. So much to still see form the disused railway line. I bet Andrew Merriman could give you a lot more information. Your research was very thourough and extremely enjoyable. I was impressed by the restored bridges that are now carrying a cycle track/footpath

Hi Paul Thank you for your video. At around 5 minutes you introduce the river as the "yealm" or "yam". Is "yam" the way it's pronounced by locals? Thanks Chris
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is. The village is always pronounced 'Yam-ton'. And the River is called the 'River Yam'. I've not heard it pronounced 'Yee-elm'. Thanks for asking and for watching. Cheers, Paul.
