This is part one of my 48v Bafung 25A bicycle conversion to use 6 Dewalt 5ah batteries. Im going to explain what I'm doing as I go and a how to do the same yourself. This video is a generic overview of what the big picture is.
Obviously this involves dangerous tools so be careful and do so at your own risk.

I've seen the future. In part 8 you complete what I would have to say is one of the most awesome diy e-bikes I've ever seen. It looks a bit pricey completed, but I'm sure it's worth it.

As a cost save I would suggest ordering flashlight switch assemblies ($3 or $4 each) from 1800toolrepair and there are free CAD models for 3D printing available for most makes of tool batteries. You can order the 3D printed parts at a very reasonable price. I would also suggest seriously consider getting your own 3D printer I'm sure you will make good use of it and it will likely pay for itself.

Blair, I need to know what electronic component I need to build power management for three 40V kobalt lawn mower batteries. I plan to place them in parallel to power a 36v hub motor. The batteries have +,-, ohms, and C.
@JaydLawrence
@JaydLawrence Жыл бұрын
Did you figure out how much current you can pull from each battery? Based on the cells, you should be able to get 40A, but I don't know if the batteries are fused to not get close to that.
@carlschock6747
@carlschock6747 7 жыл бұрын
Very nice..........btw your setup is 10 amp hours. You are running 3 18v in series and have it paralleled once. 5a x 2 = 10a hours or 10,000 mah.

amp hours doesn't seem to mean much though, better to tell people what watt hours you have.

@@carlschock6747 Are you just pretending to be dumb? You know sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet. Amp hours by itself means nothing, watt hours is amp hours x voltage which tells you about how much true capacity it has and is like the "electric gas tank" size. For example my 10AH battery brick to charge my 5V phone has less capacity than my 2AH battery that runs my 80V lawn mower because 10x5

the bottom pins on the USB charger and OEM batt charger is for the dewalt 12v batts. its a dual voltage system. since u r using 20v max batts, just focus on the 4 pins, use the flashlight as a reference for the pin out
@Blair88mph
@Blair88mph 7 жыл бұрын
I wired them cell to cell so that battery load would half per pack. I needed all 7 pins for for a 20v setup. The 8th is some sensor possibly temp. thats 0v, +3, +6, +9, +12, +16, and +18. The chargers are dual voltage but if you ran only 3 out of 5 cells out of your pack you would probably damage the pack and only be using 60% of its capacity.

I presume Blair knows this by now, but for anyone else wondering: TH: Thermistor (batt pack temp sensor connection - the reason a hot pack won't charge) ID: Identification (tells the charger if it's a "premium" pack or not, allowing faster charging on some chargers) C1-C4 are connections to each cell pair, to monitor voltage balancing. For the 5th cell pair (it's a 5S pack, remember), you read between C1 and B-, IIRC. Google it before you try - no warranty expressed or implied! For lots more great info on DW's so-called "20V" packs (or "18V XR" everywhere else in the world), I can't recommend syonyk.blogspot.com highly enough. Russell Graves is a smartie who answers a lot of questions about these packs...

It's amazing that in under three years, we've gone as DIYers from having to cannibalize perfectly good tools for battery connectors to being able to order them 3D-printed to any specification for maybe $10 apiece.

I was thinking of trying something similar, but then I added up the costs: Flashlight $40, USB Adapter $30, 5ah Battery $65, Battery Charger $30, is $165 per unit, times six equals $990! I wish DeWalt would sponsor cool projects likes yours.

I had the bike and the motor and what I needed was a good battery setup. I was basically so far into the project I couldnt back out. Part of the whole justification was also that I sold all of my old 18v dewalts and upgraded to the new 20v. So I am using these batteries for my tools as well.

Right on Blair. I'm in a similar situation. I got a bike, a motor, and a bunch of DeWalt batteries. I'm thinking about using replacement parts and clamshells instead of new tools. I also just got two of the new DeWalt drills DCD991 that come with an extra 285 Units Watts Out of max power for another project. If you got a couple of minutes check out my drill powered bike video.

Bonne chance! :-)

Great build! I have tried using 3 x 20v batteries for a bafang 48v motor and I get an over voltage error code from the bafang when the dewalt batteries are fully charged. How did you get yours to work? Do you fully charge your batteries?
@Blair88mph
@Blair88mph 7 жыл бұрын
John Dupuis mine never gave me any codes, but i got mine pre programed from my seller. i believe voltage max is a setting you can change if you get the bafung to usb cable and use the editing software.

Who was your seller? Also what is the maximum voltage when your batteries are fully charged? I have the programming cable and have tried to change it but no luck. My batteries fully charged are 20.5 volts each, 61.5 combined. I wish there was a way I could modify the dewalt charger to only charge up to 20 volts.

Yea im not interested in the 40v line at all. All of my tools are the 20v. The 40v would make a simple battery for a 36v 500w bike, however three 20s puts you at 60v which bumps a 48v 750w bike into a 1000w bike.

_"Each of those 6 batteries are $70, so that's $420!!! Plus the six torches he bought $20 that's a grand total of $540!!"_ What are you comparing to, tho? He just pulled a Headway pack, which is typical of the low end of lithium battery packs: cheaper than DeWalt packs Ah for Ah...until it dies! You also don't know what you're getting as far as cells, where DeWalt (SBD) is using quality name-brand stuff. You also don't account for the fact that this guy is a millwright and may have use for DW batteries on the job, side jobs or around the house *AND* even if he doesn't, I suspect this is his commuting vehicle. He _maybe_ spent (ZOMG!!!) $540, but how much is he saving every month on fuel, plates and insurance? Seriously, your math and reasoning skills are lacking.

that depends on the top speed since this still has pedals, of course it really depends on where you live. rules in california, ny, or illinois differ greatly from states that don't suck ass

illinois caps out at 20mph, which is funny because i can get 20mph on a road bike without a motor. You'd have to have really bored cops, or be going really fast to grab their attention to get stopped by a cop. I see these as being useful for people who want to go places 60+ miles.. at least that's why i would use one.
@ross1116
@ross1116 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Just throwing that out there. Some people dont realize that papers may be needed depending on state rules. A cop would need to be a prick to actually pester you for a battery operated setup.
