Hey everyone, in this video we are taking a look at the DeWalt 60v 20inch battery chainsaw vs the Stihl Farm Boss MS271 gas chainsaw. I am going to do some timed cuts to see which one is faster and also give my thoughts on the power and torque. This is going to be a good comparison as both saws weigh almost the same and have the same bar length. DeWalt makes their claims against a 50cc gas and I put it to the test to see if they hold true.

We got a Dewalt 20v because my wife had trouble getting her MS170 started when it's cold. It's easy for her once it's warmed up but not when cold. We changed out the consumer grade safety chain it came with for a narrow kerf full chisel and that saw really perked up. The other advantage is that after winterizing (southern New Hampshire) our saws, the battery saw is so much handier to pull out to clear branches and small tree from the road. We are a committed Dewalt family so we have plenty of batteries ready to go. If I ever need a new saw I will be getting a Dewalt 60v Thanks for the video.

Yeah I’ve been planning on trying a full chisel but some folks have said it hits the guard, I don’t see how as long as you still use the LP

Great idea! What replacement chain did you buy? I found a few and just wanted to make sure they would fit. I am not seeing the chain size and only the dewalt replacement chain numbers. I'd rather not use the dewalt replacement chain if possible

@@darin5294 For the 20v Dewalt saw with a 12" bar we used a Archer FC-D-043-45DL. That's a narrow kerf Full Chisel chain 45 drive links. We also put full chisels on the MS170 (also narrow kerf) and our Husqvarna 455 Ranchers. They make the chips fly. For the 60v Dewalt, you need a 3/8" .050" LP chain, which is readily available in full chisel. You just need to figure out the number of links, which you can count if it comes to that. Please don't take my word for it and do your own research as I'm not an expert, it is very easy to make a mistake and I don't want to mislead anyone.

I have two gas saws that I haven't started in 2 1/2 years other than to get it ready to take out with me. I also bring along a 12" dewalt 20V saw as "back up". I end up using just the dewalt and never take the gas saw out the case. The big saws are great for felling bigger trees and are considerably faster and you can go as long as you have gas and oil. Fortunately, all my needs lately have been removing trees from fences, clearing brush etc. My son and his friend tried it out a couple of weeks ago and now they both have them on their short list to buy.

They definitely serve a good purpose especially if your not just sawing all day, I find them a lot more convenient for those simple jobs like cutting a tree out of the trial etc.

Fun review. Biggest point for most of us is that, of course if you use the DeWalt for 10 minutes and the Stihl for 10 minutes it's no longer a comparison of equals. With that kind of pressure the DeWalt will fade fast where the Stihl just keeps rocking. I considered electric but until they make one I can use for two hours electric is a homeowner tool and the gas is for professionals.

Just shows you though that they are gonna just get better ... I guess the downside is you carnt really tune the battery. But you can the gas .. .. still I love battery stuff less stress instantly ready to go 😊

I also have both saws. I like the Dewalt, but it's not for cutting much wood. The battery overheats before it runs out of juice. So I have to switch batteries back and forth. Due to the overheating it would be better to have two 9ah batteries instead of one 15ah. When running the Dewalt you feel it would benefit from a chain with a larger pitch size.

I have 5 acres of Eastern Oregon well cared/forested timber...(might take 1 or 2 trees a season) Since Im a Contractor already invested c in Dewalt i think its the better choice for me. Have an old mac that starts everytime if i need to run all day

DeWalt 60V or Stihl MS271 both are very good and absolutely sufficient machines for home use, but I prefer battery saws. Thank you for comparison.

Good solid comparison. Most people know that battery chainsaws aren't meant to replace a gas saw if you're cutting large amounts of wood. I don't have a lot of property or a lot of trees but I do use my saw every year. I switched to a battery saw about 5 years ago and haven't used my gas saw since and have no intention to ever do so again.

I'm a homeowner who needs a chainsaw every few years after a storm. Gas nowadays chews up fuel lines and carbs even with stabilizer. It seems every time I needed the saw it wouldn't start. Very frustrating. I love gas when it works.

Pretty solid comparison here man. I think the amount of torque these electric saws put out is absolutely nuts. I would like a bit more chain speed for limbing and back cuts if its a truly a pro saw like they market it… now, to get my hands on one.

Interesting comparison. Good video. I’ve got the Dewalt 12” that is nice for few small branches but gas powered for bigger/more cuts IMO.

Have one of these saws and I think the big “issue” is the cost of the batteries. If you want to be able to use the saw for bucking up logs for an entire day, you’d likely need 3 of the 12/15AH Dewalt 60v batteries @ about $300-$350 each. My dad was using his 271 down in TN clearing some trees and was very impressed with my “little” battery saw

I think the idea of dewalt tools and the battery expense is chances are you're not buying just one dewalt tool. Typically if you buy one dewalt flexvolt device you're buying multiple so you can use the same batteries for whatever you need

The battery Dewalt in machines of 60V have has lower ahm than what it says on the sticker (in 20v tools it delivers all ahm) @60V~6amh=2ahm, 9ahm=3amh, 12ahm=4ahm & 15ahm=5ahm, saludos!

I think Project Farm measured the chain speed for the electric saws so definitely check that out too. I think there was a big difference even among all of the electric models out there. Your audio was great, the mic worked really well.

Project Farm is awesome, but I think he compared older DCM575 (with toolless tensioner/cover) which according to dewalt specs should have 15 m/s speed, shorter and slimmer bar of 16" and also different chain. While this DCMCS575 has according to spec should have 20" wider bar (hopefully not that flimsy as old one), with 13.5 m/s speed. So this one is bigger, wider bar = mor drag, so motor is slower with bigger torque to handle that. As a bonus to this one I see a proper old-fashioned tensioner (do not like those tool-less, have bad experience with those even from big brands) and teeth bar, longer bar, more power and torque..

I like this comparison. From what I have researched, the dewalt runs at 15 m/s and the stihl runs at about 28 m/s. I have the 16" dewalt and really like it. I switched to an Oregon chain and it cuts a lot nicer than the dewalt one did

Yesterday and today I was chopping trees down, and cutting the logs for firewood. My chainsaw is a 45cc and it did struggle here and there. Ran out of fuel, all I had to do was mix the oil and fill the tank again. This was in the mountains, away from a power socket. How useless would that DeWalt be in that situation! Mind you, as long as a petrol chainsaw has fuel, the power is always the same. The DeWalt suffers from a power drop as it drains the battery. I'm a DeWalt converted, value for money hardly any other brand comes close, but I'll have a cheap petrol farm/forest equipment than any battery powered one. I bought a battery powered trimmer, only to spend more money on a petrol one just over a year later. Glad I didn't buy an electric chainsaw, and although I hate two strokes, I'll have that chainsaw over any battery powered one. For a professional, using that saw would mean a petrol generator would be needed. And extra expense and load to carry. Is just cheaper and intelligent to use petrol chainsaws in the first place.

DeWalt went all in on torque on these new saws, reducing the chain speed to only 13.5 m/s. That Farm Boss is probably around 25 m/s (based on its .325 pitch and 13000 RPM). That is why you can really lean on the DeWalt and why the Stihl feels "smoother" with little to no pressure. A lot of these electric/cordless saws have torque for days, but low chain speeds. Makes the cut feel rougher, and gives a lot of chatter on small branches. The one exception is the new cordless Stihl MSA300, that has gas like chain speed of 30 m/s.

Brushless electric motor produces 100% power at 1 RPM they don't have power curve when you load them down, they just pull more power unlike a gas engine where when you put more load on it the RPM drops below it's best power output RPM that leads to more power loss. This is why a Tesla can whip most high HP factory cars in the 1/4 mile. When they figure out how to get a battery to equal a tank of gas that will be the end of the gas engine.

I have 20 yrs in the oil and gas industry. The last 3 in renewable energy. And it is a high possibility in california. Either way we still need oil to produce alot of the so called “green” goods. Its all a shitshow

@@rickh9507 Not completely there is an argument to make if it can remove engine exhaust. If an electric car last 10 years that’s lot of exhaust being removed. Have to admit lot of bad stuff coming from tailpipes. I’m not in favor of forcing EV on anyone I do support tax credits and subsidies. Oil and gas companies get that also have for many years. Lot of people claim lithium mining negates out the EV lack of engine exhaust. Oil refinery puts out massive amounts of pollutants. I grew up near Long Beach California I know what it smells like whatever that nasty smell is can’t be good for anyone.

What a great video! I have both but even when storing my gas Husky with canned Husky gas, it gives me fits when I don't use it for a year or two. My two Dewalt saws run every time, no matter what. Very impressed how clear and perfect your audio is with that wind too!

Being a owner of a 271 and my father in law has a dewalt 20” I’m taking the 271 everyday. I went to cut a few trees up last summer for him and I was only able to make a few cuts in a roughly 16 inch oak before the battery overheated. 90-95 outside and a hot battery don’t mix well. My gas saw would have just kept on cutting.

Question what size battery was you using? Reason i ask because that big dccs677 only supposed to run the 12ah and 15ah. It's recommended to use the bigger 15ah battery it gives it more torque. I have 3 of the 15ah batteries if one gets to hot or the battery is low I just swap over to my other one.

I liked your comparison and you brought up some interesting points. These battery saws are perfect for their intended purpose which is occasional usage and storm cleanup. Calling the Dewalt a “pro grade” saw is a bit of a stretch though. I’m curious as to how it would perform against an actual “pro” gas 50cc saw. I’m not a fan of the Stihl and Husky homeowner saws like the 271.

I think for just overall use the Echo would be my choice it’s a really good capable saw and at a lot better price point, I like the reach of the 20”bar on the Dewalt and it has plenty of power but is pricey.

When you make your hand touch that starter cord THAT is when you SHOULD start the clock! Otherwise a big advantage of the battery saw is "thrown away". (Not considered)

Not really a fair comparison with the DeWalt is 4 hp and the Stihl MS271 is 31/2 hp.The STIHL MS 261 C-M is 50 cc 4hp a few pounds lighter than the DeWalt and would eat it for breakfast. I have a DeWalt chainsaw, and it has a purpose but not cutting large amounts of firewood.

Oh yeah definitely, so far it’s been great, use it every week to mow my moms grass in town, even if it gets a bit high this mower goes right through it.

Tried to change the bar/chain to a more aggressive cut but you have to use a LP chain on these dewalt 60v saws. Anything not LP will eat at the plastic housing 🤦🏼‍♂️

Yes. I guess once the housing has been eaten you could continue using the more aggressive chain. Would love to see a third party create a new chain cover that allows for a taller/more aggressive chain

I hope in the future you can turn down the audio track when you're running the saw because I have to turn down the audio on my phone and then when you start talking I have to turn the audio back up.

I haven’t had to replace the chain yet because I sharpen it, but will definitely be looking into it, I have heard some folks replacing it with a nine LP chain

Another review that doesnt answer the BIGGEST QUESTION OF ALL. --- how long will the battery last? In your case a tank of fuel last x minutes, and a battery last X MINUTES....

I watched loads of videos about dewalt yhey are junk I got one and within a month the tentioner stripped its threads there is a massive design fault with them on the tentioner on all models with 2 side nuts not happy if I take it bk yo screw fix they said it will get sent bk to dewalt with all the rest of them 100rds uou might not get it nk gor months or a decision so I chose to track down parts and do a mod to fix the problem

Heard someone point out that the battery heats up. Well so does an engine that uses gas. Well different are little to none but difference between gas and battery is work load and impact. Gas will have a longer run time with less tops. Yet gas refueling will take a short time. Batteries can be changed in seconds and no worry on spilling. However more batteries is more price. Over all the biggest differences is you can't put gas in an electric drill or other power tools and run them. You also can't run a gas pressure washer with batteries. Yet there is battery operated pressure washers. In the end there is a professional reason to use gas and a professional reason for battery. You can convince customers that if they prefer "the more eco friendly" option doubling your business. Which may more many not be 100% true. However I bet you can charge a bit more for the battery option because of needing multiple batteries.

Obviously gas is still king. Batteries for city dwelling and gas for country living. Why does the government feel the need to mandate every aspect of our lives. Think about all the hard working landscapers that won't be able to turn over their work as fast.

The gas saw will also last for many years. That cheap Chinese battery saw will be thrown away in two yrs. Not to mention, there's nothing worse for the environment than batteries, and the way things are going, the landfills will be full of them.

Everyone praising the comparison in the comments likely don't own chainsaws or don't know how to use them. Sorry but that test is worthless without knowing that both chains are new out of the box and from the same company. The best chainsaw in the world with a bad chain will lose to the worst chainsaw in the world with a good chain.
