Drill chucks are critical to the operation of the tool and ours is bent all out of whack so we're going to replace it! However, in order to do that we'll have to get the old chuck off of the tool and that ends up being a bit of a difficult operation. Lets see what we can do! The drill is a Dewalt DCD771 20v Max cordless model, and the new chuck is a Dewalt DW5353.
Date of filming: April 16th, 2019 (Initial Removal Attempt)
May 30th/31st, 2019 (Second Removal Attempt)

Then you may enjoy channels like "ScannerDanner" w/Paul Danner! "Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics" Ivan is really well educated, and trying to make a go of Mobil Auto Tech. "New Level Auto"! Keith, from NYC, is a Mobil Auto Tech. He is friends with almost all of the auto tech guys on KZfaq. Is good friends with Ivan, and Eric O. "SOUTH MAIN AUTO"! Eric O is one of the best channels on the tube currently. While he don't have as many subs as ETCG, and Kilmer, he has an up and coming audience(over 300k I think) and is a VERY CAPABLE TECH, even though he has no formal schooling. Just learn as you go, kind of! "DIAGNOSEDAN"! He is Dutch. Just starting out as a KZfaq star. Is as smart as anions ive seen, and is also a little bit of a entertainer! There are many more. Briansmobil1, Fordtechmakuloco. SuperMario diagnostics, and so many more, that really do have a very good tech perspective, but really don't excel on the entertainment part of the show! Scannerdanner is the teacher. Eric O and DIAGNOSEDAN, are the showmen, and Keith @NLA, is the master knowledge base, that several of the guys look up too!! GIVE EM ALL A SHOT!! Not just you, but anyone that reads this.

This ABSOLUTELY works. Thank you. I have a Dewalt right angle drill that the chuck got ruined (Note that the right-angle dewalt does not have a bolt inside the chuck). I hit it for 10 minutes with a hammer on a hex key and the chuck would turn but not break loose. I put it in the freezer for 90 minutes, put the hex key in the chuck, two whacks later it came loose. Brilliant

Oh. my. freakin. god. Thank you. This actually worked. I could not get the chuck of my DCD795 to come loose (after also having problems with removing the setscrew on which I sheared two T20 bits off but WD40 did the trick then). I put the drill into the freezer for a day and after that I chucked in a (warm) allen wrench and after whacking the allen wrench 10 times or so (holding the drill in my hand) it finally came loose.

Wow, you weren't kidding the hard way! I'm surprised that you couldn't get the big heavy hammer smack against a big allen wrench in the chuck method to work. I have done this to a few of my DeWalt 20V drills that come with some lower end/worn out keyless chucks, usually takes a few good swings but they will pop loose. Keyed chucks are good for a big hd corded drill, but too much of a hassle for a cordless, I went with a heavy duty keyless chuck that the DeWalt DCD996 hammer drill uses.

This was as humorous as it was informative. I'm trying to change the keyless chuck on an 18V 1/2" heavy duty cordless drill that has seen some heavy duty use so I'm expecting that the chuck will require a heavy duty removal process. It's the one with the metal gearbox & selectable torque value for use on screws & bolts. Thanks for the video.

When you get to the last bit, try sanding a flat on opposite sides with a rough sanding pad, stick it in a vice and hopefully reverse it off. The heat from the sanding helps to free it and the flats stop it spinning in the vice.

I am glad you mentioned it.

Bring it to a service center and they will probably remove the chuck for free. That's what I did. Putting the chuck in the vise is the wrong way to do it. Put the socket in the chuck, tighten it and use the biggest breaker bar you got with both hands. Put the body in the vise with wood to protect it. The square drive part goes in the middle of the breaker bar, and a strong quick snap does it.
@FuzzyDiceProjects

Fair point about service centers, if you have something like that nearby it would certainly be worth a try! At the beginning of the video I explained that I tried to loosen it the way you explained, but no luck. It may have worked to freeze it and then use that method, though.

I have a brand new drill I want to upgrade the chuck on. The stock Röhm chuck is good but full metal chucks dont click around as much. I have tried a lot and am surprised the chuck is still straight but throwing it in the freezer is genius. I was gonna try heating the chuck but that could easily go wrong and damage the drill.

Not likely that any of this is going to help out with this issue, but here goes!! It's the sudden violent impact, that get the chuck loose. It's difficult to do, sometimes, but usually works!! I have never broke one loose from just that hard twisting. Freezing likely helped a bit, and some penetrant would likely help. Acetone and trans fluid makes a great homemade solution. You need to put a 90 degree tool in the chuck, and hit it with a hammer. You need a longer lever. And a larger hammer! Think "TORQUE WRENCH"! Think "CHEATER BAR"! But, you need it solid, and be able to hit it hard, and not let the drill give way, like when it's held in a hand! A piece of bent re-bar might work. Just put a bend right close to e end, and chuck that up!! If it will tighten up, and you don't plan to reuse it, tighten even more with s pipe wrench! The tool don't need to bend away, so a bigger piece of re-bar, or a shorter length! A 3/8 in, 4inch long extension, with the square drive end tightened up. Then put a breaker bar in to add torque. Don't push on it, strike it. It's like the multiple blows of an impact driver, the hard hits, over several times, over a short period, that usually does it. A 3/8 Allen wrench and a 12 framing hammer, may not have the gumption to do it. Not MANLY ENOUGH!! Have someone hold the drill with two hands, tightly and solidly. Then hold the tension on the tool with one hand, and strike repeatedly with a good solid mass of MANMETAL!! A 3lb hand sledge, OR BIGGER should work! The strike will put a tremendous shock load on it for a millisecond, and not tend to load up and bind like a constant pull will! I hope this info helps someone else get their chuck off, without too much trouble! I needed this info for the first drill I destroyed, removing the chuck, I finally got the chuck off, but there was nothing left of the drill. Luckily, I wanted the chuck for another drill, and wasn't worried about the first drills TOTAL DESTRUCTION!! The drill that I wanted to put the chuck on, was an older one direction, no impact, one speed, hand me down, twist drill from another era! I was already done with the stupidity, since I destroyed a smaller, lighter, reversible, variable speed, nicer drill, but was a battery drill and the batteries were dead, and cost more than I wanted to spend, and the old key style chuck on the old electric drill had no key, and was going to be a chore to do what I was needed it for. I fought the old chuck for a few minutes, and just suddenly thought to get a longer helped tool! And old, unused screwdriver, was the answer!! It fit the old chuck, was stiff enough, and was fairly easy to get bent to a 90degree bend! My neighbor saw me struggling, and lent a hand, and a BIGGER HAMMER!! The first attempt was fruitless. He wasn't hold it still enough, and I was afraid of hitting him with an errant blow, and a flying hammer from my tired hands and arms!! He said to go for it, and he proper it on his knees, held it tight for just a slight moment, and I swung it like i meant to hit it!! Popped it loose without any problems!! It hurt his knees a little, but nothing else!! No other issues after that!! Oh, the little screw inside, to hold it on, is really REVERSE THREAD! The destroyed drill suffered that lose first! The old drill, it wasn't as tight, and as I screwed it the wrong way, it tightened up. And when I went to turn it back, to help prevent tearing up the threads, it loosened!! IM AGINE MY SURPRISE!! A screw from England!! The threads were on the wrong side, just like their cars!! Lol

Lots of good tips! I did try with an 18" breaker bar attached to a hex socket and a 4lb hammer, but didn't have any luck. Maybe having another person hold it would have helped but I think the chuck was starting to fail because it would loosen up after a single big hit no matter how hard I tightened it down with channel locks.
@roadkill5333

That was more towards any future replacements, by anyone that needed some tips!! Yours was likely a odd duck in the mix! There's always one (or 30)! It was certainly on tighter than the average chucks, ttho. I've seen some pretty snug ones, I've also seen some that fell off before I could get anywhere close to them!! Lol Best of luck!

I've got a ~40 year-old Ryobi drill which has also seen better days. It was going pretty well until I used it as a die grinder against some mag wheels, it's never sounded the same since. It definitely needs new motor brushes and I'd like to put new bearings in it like you did with your angle grinder. Makes you really see the value of these brand name tools, the typical $9 Harbour Freight tool would have died a million deaths handling the same abuse.

Dewalt ain't cheap, and once you commit to a battery manufacturer, you're pretty much married to them for life. I don't blame him for trying to fix that one.

Did it not occur to you to just take the thing apart and remove the chuck after taking apart the gear shaft? It would have saved you a lot more time and saved your drill from the wear and cosmetic damage.

Have a 771 drill/driver. Got the bolt out, struggling with loosening the chuck. My drill and this one in the video have a gear box that will pop when pressure is applied and you can't apply any more torque than when the gear box spins. Saw a video where a guy took his case off and separated the chuck and stem from the motor. Placed the stem in a bench vise and powered the chuck off with pipe wrench. Think these drill drivers have a gear box for the torque adjustment and are a different beast?
