-----------------------------------------------------------------
TheDEWALT FlexVolt 60-Volt 17" Brushless Attachment Capable String Trimmer comes in a kit with the 9Ah battery (DCST972X1)or as a bare tool(DCST972b). This powerhead is capable of tackling tough overgrowth with a string trimmer or brush cutter and withstanding heavy-duty use with an edger. The universal attachment capability allows you to connect additional DEWALT add-ons already on the market. This is a 60V Power Head that only uses the FlexVolt battery. This battery is backward compatible to work with 20V DEWALT tools and will help some tools gain extra power over smaller Amp Hour batteries.
So why a DEWALT, Milwaukee, or Makita trimmer over an EGO, Greenworks, or Echo? This slight change in my recommendation is because we get questions daily on why my 1/2" high torque impact wrench won't remove a lug nut, or why my circular saw won't cut a 2x10. It is because you cannot use a 2Ah battery on a heavy-duty tool. If people would invest in the OPE of a tool brand and get the larger batteries, they would have a better experience. ALSO, when you have a battery fail that is not under warranty, they are incredibly expensive to replace. Some EGO batteries are north of $300 for a battery. To be fair, a DEWALT FlexVolt is not far behind them in price, but you can use the DEWALT battery on a hundred or so other tools. When you need to purchase a new battery, at least you have multiple other tools you can use it with and possibly even upgrade another tool to a new, more powerful one.
I am not trying to say that dedicated OPE platforms do not perform well. In some cases, I would recommend people buy battery OPE tools as a stand-alone. If you are a person who loves their lawn and wants a perfect cut and feel to using a certain OPE battery-operated tool, then I would most likely say Toro would be a great place to grab a battery lawnmower even though the cost of ownership including its limited use for batteries. But that mower will fit that need for the person.
Many people do not own a large number of tools or even have the need. But if you ever need a drill, impact driver, or saw and you already have a tool company battery, that purchase will be much less expensive.

I bought this after my Troy Bilt universal trimmer went down from a clutch that exploded and broke the flywheel. This Dewalt trimmer is an absolute beast and it took all of my MTD attachments that I bought with the Troy Bilt (weed eater, brush cutter, edger, hedge trimmer, pole saw). As far as power goes it’s even stronger than the 27cc gas powered trimmer I had. Runtime can be a bit low if you only have one battery. I have 4 9ah and one 6ah so I never really think about it, but with one battery, just throttle it to where you need it to cut, don’t just let it rip all the time and it actually does well. I can do about three properties and the battery will die soon into the 4th. If the properties require a lot of trimming, get a spare battery and you’ll be pretty pleased. When I say this thing has power, it has POWER.

I bought the flexvolt trimmer blower combo and you're not joking if you rip this thing full power it is a beast of a machine for a battery operated. I went into HD looking for a gas trimmer to my surprise they don't carry them anymore so I picked the combo kit up and wow it will cut through thick and thin no problem. Only concern is the fragility of the trimmer head so I've heard but we will see

@@kylehartley3822 I just used it today with the pole saw, and it’s still going just as strong. I’ve heard about the trimmer head being fragile. And honestly, it certainly feels that way if you ever tap it on concrete. And that’s what I’ve learned. Never tap the trimmer head on concrete. Dirt or grass or mulch or something of that nature only. I’ve not had a single problem out of it yet. But the one time I tapped it on concrete…it just sounded like failure was on the way if I continued to do that.

@@stevegalea518I just got this unit and thoroughly tested it, with a 9ah battery on low, it cut just fine even up to 1ft high grass and weeds and I got 30 min. Also a video by princess cuts shows you can use a stihl 12-2 auto feed head or even a Husqvarna 12-2 head for a major upgrade as the head that comes with it is weak. I did notice it does smack even small rocks like you hit a Brick wall, it design just catches stuff instead of glide over it. That being said, this may be the best tool I ever owned for my lawn care game. Seriously impressive, factor in you'll not have to get gas, mix oil, wash gas off hands and it's so quiet you won't wake your neighbors at 5am of you want to get started ealry..this trimmer is money well spent.

Just bought this unit along with the hedge trimmer and edger attachments. Pruned a hedge 25 feet long and brought it down at least 8 inches in height. Then I edged a good 100 feet in sidewalk and driveway. My 9ah flex lot had only lost one bar. So I find it really hard to believe his lasted 10 minutes.

I have two of these. I put the speed feed head on both. I run it on high with a 6Ah FlexVolt and it last for at least 20 minutes. I’m not cutting trees with it, but grass and weeds. Not sure why lots of others seem to think that this eats batteries. I’m super happy with it.

I enjoy using mine. This is the first 60 volt tool I’ve purchased. It’s so good I decided to get the lawn mower, blower, and chainsaw. The lawn mower came with two 12 amp hour batteries and the blower and chainsaw I got as a combo kit with one 9 amp hour battery. After that I got a 4 port fast charger so now I’ve got more battery power than I really need but if the weather is right I don’t want my productivity to be limited by battery life. I replaced the head on my line trimmer with a t35 Husqvarna head because I had 2 additional spools which is faster to swap out than fiddling with the dewalt head, also a Shakespeare brush cutter head for the really tough stuff. Mostly run mine on low due to how much longer the battery lasts but if I’m really in some thick stuff the high option is unstoppable and great to have but really sucks the battery down. I am very happy with my purchase but I’d love to see Dewalt release a roto-tiller then I can be truly free from finicky carbureted machinery.

I didn’t know Dewalt had a 60v lawnmower. I’ve always seen the 20v duel battery one. That’s seems interesting, 🤔 I was thinking on getting this trimmer but all my tools are 20v But if movers is 60v and it comes with two 12amps (I think that’s what you mentioned) then it’s probably worth buying the kit for those batteries alone. Gonna look into it, Tks 🤙🏽

@@zjedinite sorry I misspoke. The lawnmower can run 20 volt batteries but comes with two 12ah batteries that are the flex-volt. I have 4 XR 20 volts that I sometimes run in the lawn mower if I’ve just got a little to do just to keep from cycling the flex-volts partially. I think it’s better to fully charge and fully discharge them rather than float along with a random amount of charge on the big capacity batteries just so I know I’ve got maximum run time when I grab the tools to do the job.

@@robtheknob7791 yeah I’d figure after searching for that 60v mower and not finding it anywhere. I’m with you on the batteries 💯, I do the same. Even on my smaller ones. -- Just ordered this (updated) unit tonight, I watched this first. Ordered an extra speed head for it because why not? I'm trying to get away from 2-stroke equipment and carbs. Four stroke (Lawn mower, snow blower, sidewalk edger) fine. I'm tired of 2-stroke carbs gumming up, despite using stable, running out the tanks, changing plugs every/every other season. Just tired of 2-stroke in general. And my Stihl weed whip (dad bought it, probably 25 years old now) is tired. Picked up a 20v electric hedge trimmer from DeWalt as well. Tired of extension cords. Get rid of extension cords and 2-stroke fuel for around the house. I'll be happy. Thumbs up.

I own this and it has real power . I think the spool head it comes with is pretty crappy but one can easily upgrade to a stihl. The lock trigger is only awkward for the first few minutes then you don’t even think about it. It is well balanced and ergonomic. It feels robustly built. Run time is good - I don’t even know how you only got 10 minutes out of it. I was cutting 6’ tall 1” thick thistles with a brush cutter head on the high setting and it lasted about 20-25 minutes . Highly recommended.

I just used for the first time today and holy crap that thing rips!!! I've been using an Echo SRM-225 and older PB-110 and the Dewalt did a way better and more importantly easier job of handling my 1/2 acre property. The only two dings I give it is the guard is too small and it was throwing a hail of crap all over my face and elsewhere. And the small safety lock digs into the palm of your hand if you're on and off the trigger, but I suppose over time I can use better technique or just modify that piece. I don't see why there wouldn't be 60V revolution about to happen, the power is almost unbelievable.

I was impressed with the DeWalt trimmer line , so I decided to stick with it . I've always used larger lines on commerical gas models 1.05 ,.95 but I'm not going to be edging with it, and because it's so tough I can get away with the .80 DeWalt line. I think it helps the battery life, not that that an issue for a small yard , I could have gotten the 6ah battery and still have plenty of run time and less weight than the 9ah . I noticed people are converting to the huskavarna T35 head, it's so nice to not have to fool around with gasoline ⛽, and all the maintenance, and I don't have to pull start it , what's not to love? 🥰

I agree with your assessment. Great string trimmer, but definitely need an extra battery for better run time. The string head is brittle and I already gone through two plastic cover broken already over two seasons. How can you be more careful when your trimmer head had to bump around and hit solid objects like stones and roots. Also, the trimmer head definitely burn the trimmer strings a lot faster so use ticker strings like 0.8 or 0.9 is better. DeWalt should pay attention and probably need to redesign the trimmer head with better materials because my previous string trimmer doesn't have such issue.

Was debating 20v vs 60v and went with the 20v due to the weight difference and the fact that I have a bunch of 20v batteries. We’re retired and weight is a consideration. The local HD didn’t have a 60v on display so we couldn’t get a feel for it and needed one that evening. Looking at the video I see that the motor of the 60v is above the handle, unlike the 20v where the motor is at the cutting head. Makes me wonder if the heavier 60v might actually be better balanced and easier to use for that reason.

The safety trigger never once bothered me and is not a big deal at all. It's a lot more seamless in operation than many reviewers lead you to believe. As your hand slides over the top of the safety trigger the extra part gets depressed automatically and you don't even realize it's there. Most people who have dewalt have multiple batteries so that isn't really an issue either. If this is your only dewalt tool I can see it being an issue, but that would be the minority of people using this tool line.

Hard to be gentle with the head when you have to hit that head to feed more string. I hope mine doesn't break soon. Mine last a LOT longer than 10 minutes. Probably closer to 25 minutes maybe a bit more. The trigger is not problem for me. I do wish it was longer for my 6-0 height, but I make do.

Man those guys must really be beating the head to break it. I do not find it to be brittle at all. My 6'1" 325lb frame hit the thing pretty good to feed line but never felt like it would break. Of course I do not keep banging things if it is not feeding (happened only once in the last 1.5 years)

how would the 5 amp and 6 amp work in this? or is it not enough juice?
@WorkshopAddict

Both work, but the 5Ah will not give you the power it should and it will get the battery very hot quickly. 6Ah is a bit better at power and heat, but that would be the smallest I would run.

@nyacoustics8373 many people say they get that from a 9Ah. Remember, this is a flexvolt tool, so 60 volts. I missed that. A 20 volt 5 ah will not work.. a 6ah flexvolt will.

Run on Low and the batteries last. Don't use the stepped finger trigger; just full throttle on Low. 9Ah should last a typical postage stamp lawn. Run on High when wacking crap like 4' tall reed canary / cattail (aka. thick stuff). Regularly mowed / trimmed turf shouldn't need High.

Yeah , not buying anymore finish nailers from Dewalt, digital trigger go’s out way to soon, they don’t last , brad nailers and I’ve had two , won’t fire all the nails, the clip climbs on top of itself. Parts are two expensive, the down time is to long to send it off, they need to do the full test on these and and stop making us their test dummies. Very disappointed, going to another brand , but if they made a belt sander I’d buy it to try it.
