What an amazing video... I've just come off the back of watching someone putting sticky red bike grease on the cogs you mentioned and I was thinking to myself "that can't be right!".. thanks Sion, your video has saved me from doing that and maybe even saved my table saw. Thank you so much. Consider me subscribed!

I know this is an old thread but i've only just found it. I purchased my saw about 6 years ago and have been really pleased with it until recently… . when the blade rise has been tightening up… and the lowering has become jerky. The problem is of course dust related..my fault, the saw has been operating flawlessly for years… i'd just blow it out every few weeks… but that's not enough !! Firstly, i would urge anyone with one of these saws to invest in a shop vac… absolutely essential so that at least you'll get rid of most of the dust… Secondly, i'd blow out the dust from around the motor daily, not weekly or monthly… . it'll save the saw. Thirdly, spray a dry lube like a silicone spray on the threaded rod which runs the rise on the saw frequently, and perhaps even more importantly spray the tracking guides on either side of the motor… . when i spray these the jerkiness disappears … for a while anyway. The dust is a major issue with these saws… i don't know why Dewalt hasn't done something about better sealing the intetnals of the blade area… there are gaping holes front and back of the blade which allow the dust to escape… … .so i'm looking at the best way to seal these openings now. I love my saw, but i'd think twice before purchasing another one because of this issue… . when you spend $1400 Aus you shouldn't have this problem !!

I completely agree with everything you said, and can’t help, but feel that companies like Dewalt actually build in obsolescence into their equipment to further increase their profit

Agreed… you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that the blade compartment bleeds a lot of dust around the underside of the saw…. and it can't be that difficult to design the saw correctly in the first place…. go figure…

I love videos like this. Woodworking is not just about making nice stuff, you need tool maintenance skills in the mix. Sorry to hear about the repair bill, pity you can't cut a notch in the casting and slot in a nut. I am having similar issues with my table saw, the fence has a cast part that cracked and am jerry rigging it. Was thinking of buying a new saw anyway.

Mine just started rattling and skipping. I remembered making a mental note of this video a few years ago and am glad to have found it again. I am considering my options. Do you happen know: 1) What type of thread is the threaded rod? 2) Is there any excess thread on the rod when the blade is fully lowered or raised? In that case, one might simply glue a nut to the aluminum casing on either side of the internal thread.

Hi Simon. I've currently got my 745 in bits and have found huge slop in the threaded boss, exactly as you describe. Mine hasn't stripped yet but has lateral and vertical movement within the boss, indicating the thread is significantly worn. The undercut for the circlip (winding shaft) is also too shallow, allowing the circlip to disengage and slip down the shaft. This in turn allows the vertical bevel gear to fall out of mesh with the horozontal bevel gear. I too love my 745, and up to now has performed well, but I now have to decide whether to invest in a repair, or but a different brand.
@sionhughes5543

Hi Tony, I know your dilemma well and as you saw I got mine repaired . I think I paid about £130 cash in the end which was a little cheaper than I was expecting. I think the DW 745 is a great little saw and certainly the fence is better than most around the same price . If you do decide to get it repaired you will need to set it up again afterwards. I made a video called ( Table saw set up ) which you might find useful. Best of luck repairing or replacing and please consider subscribing to help me grow this little channel. Cheers Sion

@Mike-In-O-Town

Gee, who would have thought running a hardened steel threaded rod through cast aluminum and expecting it to carry all the weight of the motor and drive assembly would create an issue? Answer: Basically anyone who's ever designed or built something. Installing a simple brass or steel threaded insert in that gearcase assembly for that threaded height adjust rod to run through would have cost maybe $1 in manufacturing cost and would have solved this entire issue.

Everyone I know has a problem like this with this SaW!!! Including ME!!! There should be a hardened threaded receiver inside the aluminum casting -- and come on it wouldn’t cost them THAT MUCH to do this-- there can also be corrosion on the other Guide rods which can cause the blade to Freeze in place-- Fortunately My saw “froze” with the blade at it’s maximum height- and yes I know it’s not the safest thing when you’re cutting thinner boards but at least the damn thing is still useable…..

@@sionhughes5543 I've taken a look at the mechanism today, and I think that it would be fairly tricky to install something that will protect it well, particularly from fine dust. Maybe I'll just have to try to clean the mechanism regularly. Anyway, if it's steel on aluminium, that will wear out reasonably quickly anyway. That's a crazy cost saving decision on DeWalt's part.

@sionhughes5543

Interesting idea but too late for me and it would also require the ability to weld aluminium which I don’t possess. Nice to know that video has got you thinking but I confess I would keep it clean with compressed air and never force the blade adjustment wheel if it seems a little stiff . That just means the threads are contaminated and its back to cleaning it with compressed air . Really appreciate you taking the time to comment . Cheers Sion

@@sionhughes5543 eh, happy to help; btw I mean steel bolts and weld them together (through an additional steel bar) so they force the alluminium cast simply by pulling/pushing; sorry with a drawing would be easy to understood - what I meant is something like a dental bridge of two teeth on different side of the mouth - a "C" shaped object. (From FAB) I had a similar problem (it was hard to bring the blade up) with my Dewalt 7485 that I bought 4 months ago. I was going to take it to the Dewalt repair center today, but I decided to watch some videos about how to repair it. One person said to use some type of red grease. I had some similar "dry oil" as you suggested, I have the DW-40 Dry Lube with PTFE. It works. With every quarter turn of the blade height adjustment wheel I sprayed the shaft next to the gear. No messy grease. The manufacturer didn't use grease anyway. The "dry oil" keeps it kind of dry and smooth. This saved me a trip to the Dewalt repair shop and not having my table saw out for a few days at least. (NOTE: the dry oil might be flammable, so it might be a good idea to wait a few minutes before turning the motor on. I also covered the motor with some rag to protect it from oil getting inside it) . (NOTE: Remove the blade and the knife before turning the table saw upside down so that when you turn the wheel the blade won't be on the way). Thank you.

I was having difficulty with mine getting jammed bringing the blade up too. I'd clean and oil it but it would only fix the problem for a bit. It seems to be the lift mechanism out of alignment somehow. I'm not sure how to fix it permanently but pulling up and forward on the back of the riving knife or blade a little while cranking it up makes it ride up smoothly. Turns out the cleaning and oil didn't do anything. But flipping the saw over shifted the mechanism enough to get it sliding smoothly again.
