Today we will test the Dewalt 12v DCF902B impact wrench rated at 2,400 in-lbs. or 200 ft-lbs of breakaway torque vs the Kobalt at 150 ft-lbs breakaway torque vs the Harbor Freight Hercules 100 ft-lbs. BreakAway Torque. We will be using the Loosening Torque Test. This test is also known as the “breakaway” test. This test uses force in the direction that loosens the fastener. To conduct this test, take a screw or bolt that is tightened down and begin to loosen it. When the fastener breaks loose, record the torque reading. The torque value to loosen the fastener is the approximate torque that was applied to the joint. This method is considered the easiest to perform, but it may not always correlate to the torque applied to the joint and at times the actual breakaway force required to remove the fastener can be up to 10% greater than the force required for tightening.

Very good video, very informative. 50 years ago I had a 1/2" Craftsman 115 volt impact wrench. I could no remove the lugs off of my 1/2 ton Ford PU truck. I got rid it that thing post haste. NOW......I am simply amazed at how much torque that little 1/4" Kobalt impact wrench has. I bought one two weeks ago. No problem removing the wheel lugs off of my 3/4 ton van. No more dragging around an air hose for my CP air impact wrench. I also purchased the Kobalt 1/2" 24 volt impact wrench for heavy duty jobs. Barry

I work at an automotive dealership. I have the Kobalt XTR 1/2 impact and the 24v max 3/8 impact, and I use both constantly all day long five days a week. I've been able to remove axle ubolt fasteners that a Snap-On MG725 pneumatic wouldn't budge. With heavy use, I only charge/swap out batteries 1-2 times a week if that. The 3/8 does everything from suspension to brakes to under hood work, if it will fit 99% of the time it will work. 1/2 XTR kit with 4.0 battery and charger, 3/8 24v max bare tool, one 24v max 4.0 battery and a 2.0 24v max battery all for around $300ish (got lucky with promotions and sales when buying everything). Absolutely happy with both of them, and look forward to adding more tools (espically the electric ratchet) to my box very soon.

4 years w my big kobalt 1/2 impact, used and abused and has taken off too many rusted and stuck bolts to count. It impressed me so much that I bought the angle grinder, 3/8 impact, skill saw, and sawzall. Kobalt performs like the big brands (sometimes even better) for a better price and the battery cost really just drives it home.

Good video comparison. I have both an air and 3/8 cordless impact which are handy for engine rebuilding, working on generators, small engines and equipment but when it comes to lugnuts you are likely taking off 5 or 6 up to 8 times 4 so 20 to 32 lugs at a time. That is when I use my larger 1/2 inch cordless or my trusty old air impact which claims 720 lbs torque.

One potential for error in your testing of using the same bolt at different levels of torque is that as the threads heat up, it will be easier to break the nut loose. Just something to think about.

Thanks for this video! I got the Kobalt one for Christmas. Im already spoiled with a old beast Milwaukee so Idk what to expect, but at 200lb ft, that thing will do most things automotive assuming no significant rust/dirt. Wish you would have tried 225 or 250lbs just to see. Also, I just watched another channel with Kobalts right angle impact, their rating was 180lbs, but test at 250lbs!!! That's nuts. It appears that Kobalt is very conservative with their numbers. It probably hurts their sales, but good for us buyers. keeps the prices down.

A major point you missed on cost- Extra batteries. Kobalt batteries are 24v and cost less than an equivalent amp hour rated Dewalt 12v battery. A 2 amp dewalt is $49, and a 2 amp Kobalt is $29 at the normal price. One extra battery will completely wipe out any price advantage from the Dewalt. The Hercules 2 amp is $25 (and the cheapest), but as you showed, doesn't have the oomph of the other 2 tools.

Wouldn't recommend, this is a test to see what the limits are. If you are constantly useing a electric impact at its limits you will kill it in short order. You will probably go through 5 tire changes before you let the smoke out on any of these tools. And probably come across a few rusted lugs that you will half to use a breaker bar on any way. I would recommend getting any of the of the larger 1/2in guns. Kobalts old model (not the new xtr) is 170 with battery and charger. Probably best bang for your buck if you are wanting to take of lug nuts, but there are cheaper options out there for diy use. By the way I'm a diesel mechanic.
@chuckd7423
@chuckd7423 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sold on the Hercules. It struggled on the lug nut freshly torqued to 100 ft pounds, and in real life you're bound to come across lug nuts tighter than that. I think if you catch the Kobalt when it's on sale at Lowes with the battery kit that comes with a charger, 2AH battery and 4AH battery, for $129, with the impact thrown in free, that's a better buy than the Hercules where you have to buy the tool separate from the battery and charger. Or, you could just buy the Kobalt 1/4 impact and drill/driver from Lowes, including a charger and 2AH battery, that is on sale for $129 through July 7, which is a 35% discount from the normal $199 price. That 1/4 inch compact driver is rated at 1800 inch pounds, which is the equivalent of the same 150 ft pounds of the 3/8 impact they tested here, and with a hex to 1/2 adapter, that compact driver would likely outperform the Hercules.

Good video. However, it’s my understanding that if you tighten something to. 100 foot pounds, it doesn’t take as. Much to loosen it. That’s because threads are really an circular inclined plane. I might be wrong, but I’m 99% sure of that. I’d suggest getting one of those torque measuring devices. However, that doesn’t make this comparison invalid' since they all were working on the same bolt and torque specifications. I was just poking out that your assumption of the reverse torque specifications, might be invalid. Maybe.

The head size of the kobalt is the same as the 1/2" impact which is rated at 200 ft lbs. I think it's cheaper to just change out the anvil and keep the same motor between the two. I don't know why they are understating the torque for the 3/8". I do love mine and all the 24v tools!

I wonder if the bolt wasn't capable of accurately being torqued, because of no lubricated threads. I'm thinking about installing head bolts, that's noise it made when torquing down lug resembles a head bolt not being properly torqued. It's like the friction bites the threads of bolt/ housing and isn't clamping down. So like 200 ft lbs may be 150ft lbs. I'm may try this a home

@partsshooter
@partsshooter 4 жыл бұрын
@@ClientGraphics Oh yeah I completely see that and understand. That was my point, they were dry. Just curious as to the actual torque when the lug failed to turn, it was lock and the torque wrench was measuring your weight applied vs being transferred to the lug nut. To see what I'm talking about, one would have to measure the torque of removal. So like, if you applied 200 ft lbs, removal torque would probably be 150ft lbs. A lost of 50ft lbs due to dry threads. I wonder if lub on threads would've changed the outcome. This was just a thought of mine, I'm a mechanic so seeing that cause a reminiscent state

Looks like Milwaukee is falling behind the Dewalt in the compact 12v impact line. Their compact 12v 3/8 (2454) is only rated for 117 ftlbs. I have the stubby and really like it, but sometimes it's too fat to get some places without universals. Makes the dewalt appealing because of its size for underhood stuff.

M12 3/8 & 1/2 stubby impact are 250 lbs. 1/4 is rated 100 lbs. If you start putting adaptors on the 1/4, it's also going to lose some of that.
@juanc5149

I’m pretty sure Kobalt, states fastening torque, not breakaway. But I could be wrong. It should be the strongest out of the three, seeing how it’s 24 volts vs 12. If they did use breakaway torque ratings, I bet they would advertise 240 ft-lbs.

Kobalt marketing specifications: “150-ft-lbs of torque in forward and reverse For effortless tightening and removal of large bolts”
@juanc5149
@juanc5149 4 жыл бұрын
ClientGraphics Correct, it’s stating actual static torque, or fastening torque over time. Meaning if you were to place it on a skidmore wilhem, it will in short order measure (or if you use it to fasten a reverse thread fastener it will tighten to) 150 ft-lb or more for the Kobalt. 125 ft-lb fastening for the DeWalt and at least 100 ft-lb fastening or more for the Hercules. Breakaway torque relies on the physics phenomenon, that if we assume good condition threads, no corrosion or extra friction. It takes less torque to break a fastener, then the original torque it was applied under. AVE has a video demonstrating this fact. So theoretically, if you fasten a bolt to 100 lb-ft, you won’t need 100 lb-ft to break it lose. It will be somewhere between 60 and 80 lb-ft depending on the threads. That’s fine, the problem occurs is “breakaway torque” results will vary depending on conditions, and manufacturers confusingly so, are using breakaway torque interchangeably as fastening torque. DeWalt seems to use a fastening torque is 62.5 percent of breakaway torque formula in this case. But in other impacts it advertises as much as fastening torque is 56 percent of breakaway torque. But yet in its biggest impact it’s rated at 700 ft-lb fastening, but it has measured an actual static torque of over 900 and 1000 lb-ft so I’ll give them a pass. TL:DR. Manufacturers use confusing metrics when it comes to torque output. And breakaway torque is not a real number of actual force produced. In an ideal world, everyone would just state forward and reverse fastening torque, under the same test conditions among different manufacturers.

Lowes has the Dewalt DCF902B for 100 bucks. I liked mine so much, I bought another one the next day. Out of the three, I think it's safe to say, the HF impact sucked. The Kobalt 24v vs the DeWalt 12v. I think the DeWalt held it's own against a more powerful Kobalt Impact. The Dewalt 12v is smaller in size compared to the Kobalt allowing for tighter clearances. DeWalt won in my eyes.
