Zaha Hadid Architects has released this movie detailing its design for the scrapped Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium, which it describes as "the only way to achieve value for money in the market".
The film, which is over 20 minutes long, explains the decisions made during the two-year-long design process that lead to the current proposal, which was dropped last month by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe citing spiralling costs.
It also argues that starting again with a new design will not save the Japanese taxpayer any money so it could end up costing more in the long term, and the firm urges the government to reconsider its decision.
"The design should be seen as the only way to achieve value for money in the market," says Zaha Hadid Architects in the film.
The estimated cost of the Japan National Stadium rose to 252 billion yen (£1.3 billion) last year and has seen opposition from many Japanese architects. The government has now decided to start again with a new design.
But the London-based firm claims the increase is due to a 25 per cent rise in costs across Tokyo's construction market over the past two years. In the film, it says it will be impossible to create an equivalent stadium for less money.

For a country with so much history in architectural innovation, Japan truly embarassed itself by building Kuma's design rather than the one they had originaly chosen themselves. Hadid's design had some dynamic, it had a huge gallery on the stadium's perimeter and it appeared open and welcoming. The final stadium is nothing. I can accept a different famous architect being chosen for the design, but Kuma could have done MUCH better than that.

you should not judge architecture by the appearances and look alone. that's what makes it a complicated art coz it deals with science, technicalities, economy, emotion, etc. .. there are lots of brilliant architects in japan, im sure they can design whats good for japan, since they understand their culture and context better.

The Japanese rejected the design/stage because it would cost 2 billion to build. Now Japan has suffered a loss of 13 billion with the postponement of the Olympics. Zaha Hadid must be very happy under the grave LMFAOAOAO

Pitty Japan didn't have enough money to build it. The chosen design blends in well with the city as it is currently is, but if you want something to inspire the present generation to take on the future, then look no further than this awesome proposal. I guess currently "hope" is scarce in Japan =(

Shouldn't they be telling this to the Japanese officials/ public? Making a video in English with no Japanese subtitles is not exactly going to convince the target audience, who doesn't speak or understand English.

English is a universal language and this is especially true for Japan - a highly developed and prosperous country, hence Japanese officials would definitely be able to understand English.

@@iginantony5516 I don't even remember I ever wrote this comment or watched this video, it's so old. But I do think your estimation of the popularity of English is exaggerated. A lot of people do not speak or understand English on a high level, and that is still true even in large parts of Europe and I believe is true for east Asia as well. How developed or prosperous a country is, is detached from the citizens' ability to speak English. That said, in retrospect, I think there was no reason to believe the campaign was never translated to Japanese to begin with. Maybe this video was just an English version to a Japanese one. But in the end, seeing as this is not the design that was used, it doesn't matter anyway.

Too late to be begging to have your design reinstated! Shinzo Abe has made up his mind; there will be a new design.

Yes the current design is ugly. For example DDM Plaza is a Tourist Hotspot in Seoul that tourists flock to. The new JNS design looks like a Cake tin and was designed clumsily. It will become desolate after the Olympics.
