I think the thing that most people forget about the Xbox One launch wasn't that the Kinect was bad persay, but it was also at the same time the NSA spying thing got announced and all of a sudden nobody wanted a camera in their living room. Combining the tepid idea of a multimedia box with a Kinect and the leak that Microsoft would be legally required to let the government spy on you, kinda ruined the entire launch.

I live in the Netherlands and the part that is alarming about the Xbox sales in Europe is that there is barely any Xbox marketing or visibility. Not in stores, not on billboards in the subway, not in de cinema, not on TV, not on posters or in adds. Xbox does not seem to care about their European playerbase in the slightest. I find that very disappointing, because Playstation marketing is everywhere here. If they crank up their marketing and visibility here and make attractive console and Game Pass bundles, I’m sure their sales will rise significantly! The Xbox black friday offers were also barebones here. Xbox All Access is also not available here which is also a notable issue… I hear the same trend from friends who live in Belgium, Germany and France. It’s not a good sign at all!

Marketing wouldn't change the fact it hasn't had any good exclusives since the original Xbox and 360. There is no point owning one. Plus I bought an official Xbox controller to use with my laptop, and one of the shoulder buttons failed within months, whereas my PS4 pads have thousands of hours on and are both still fine.

One thing I would argue about Alan Wake 2 Path Tracing vs Baked Lightning, is that the rasterization approach on the game has so many visible flaws (in aspects that TLoU2 simply nailed) that in a side-by-side comparison, it makes you perceive a much bigger gap with the Path Tracing setting as it could have been. Issues like artifacts related to occlusion and disocclusion, the amount of noise in reflections, shadows, and other light effects that you find in the PS5 version are really a disappointment, especially compared with older games like TLoU2 which offered basically a master class on baked lightning. To me, it seems that since dynamic lighting was introduced in games with RT and now PT, we've seen a decrease in the quality of the rasterized options offered, which I think is really a shame.

Its likely a necessary evil though in order to actually move to a point where games have no baked lighting at all. Its always been a bit rough when big rendering changes like this are in their infancy, it just hasn't happened for so long.
@mbsfaridi
@mbsfaridi 7 ай бұрын
Since it’s “baked” that approach gets you perfect quality cause it’s not done in real time while playing the game while real time lighting needs to be able run in real time and can never match a offline render.

It's wrong to compare AW2 against TLoU 2 since the former one still does some amount of SW tracing against SDFs for specular GI with rasterization, while TLoU 2 doesn't. So, in TLoU, you won't find a proper specular occlusion, while, in AW2, you would, but there will be noise as well due to point and stochastic sampling of SDFs.
@123Heitor321
@123Heitor321 7 ай бұрын
@@revolverocelot2769 my point is that the amount of noise and artifacts are so annoying that I would rather prefer not having any specular GI at all. I prefer to have a better looking image and experience than having a newer technology just for the sake of being new instead of giving a better result…

The problem is, with stagnant wages and economic distress in many countries, gaming is having a cost crisis. Many are feeling left out by new hardware developments when the games really aren't getting any more entertaining because of them. We've hit such a huge wall of diminishing returns in what tech can fundamentally change for gaming, and it feels like wasted money to just have better image resolve when you zoom in at 16x like Digital foundry does. Its like, what is the point of this? Why are we championing these marginal pedantic changes? It sure isn't improving the gaming landscape. It seems like gaming is in a really rough spot for a lot of reason, really.

@@PopOfAfrica I get what you're saying and I'm fortunate to be able to afford at 4070ti but lemme tell ya, playing Cyberpunk with Path Tracing BLEW MY MIND in terms of immersiveness, jaw dropping good looking, no way I would have been nearly as immersed if it looked like any other game. To your point that's exactly what Alex's optimized settings are for, you can get top tier visuals with 6 year old hardware. Very few games if any require the latest hardware if you turn down the right settings and throw DLSS into the mix etc.. As DF mentioned, I hope Crysis 4 really does push the boundary because there is a lot of gameplay in more advanced graphics, such as how UE5 Niagara particle system can be used, or games that use path tracing to make immersive dark areas. The reason it seems like graphics haven't changed gameplay much is because devs are well aware most people are playing on toasters. When the standard of PCs is a 12th gen i7 and 40 series cards, you absolutely will see games where the advanced graphics tech heavily aids gameplay.

16:34 Even though Rich laughed at this, if you include Sony in "who's ever responsible" then the request is actually perfectly reasonable. It's not the same as "do a good job" making a game (from scratch). We're just talking about the technical quality of the port, and DF knows better than anyone that there are testable ways to determine this for them. So then it really comes down to Sony and the developer not releasing it before it's truly ready.

I guess not too far, but part 2 remaster and season 2 are seemingly a year away from each other at least. It's not like there's no cross promotion, but there's just way less exposure when the marketing run for the game was over months to a year prior. It's not like HBO show has ads of the games running during the episodes.

1:42:10 is a fair question. Cyberpunk with Ultra RT, while less physically accurate, looks worlds cleaner and sharper. There is no fizzling, ghosting or swimming NPC faces. I'm confident that Nvidia will continue to improve DLSS 3.5, but in Cyberpunk specifically Path Tracing is a big step back in imagine sharpness and clarity.
@Rexneron
@Rexneron 7 ай бұрын
It's really disappointing that they just chuckle this off. Ray Reconstruction in Cyberpunk is unusable, full stop. It doesn't matter that reflections and shadows are a little more accurate. The ghosting and oily effect on ALL NPC faces, which you'll be seeing constantly, is a non-starter. I don't understand how any developer saw that and thought "huh, yeah that's fine." It's awful and in that configuration (Path Tracing with RR) certainly does look worse than TLOU on PS5.

TLOU2's lighting looks pleasing. There was a lot of thought and time that went into artistically crafting it but, no way it beats high end path tracing or even comes close in regards to realism. It doesn't. However TLOU2 has really great art design, but one has to remind themselves that TLOU2 is baked lighnting at its best (along with the Horizon game). I'm sure it beats low- slightly below mid level pathtracing efforts, but a good path tracing game absolutely beats it. I wonder what Naughtydog, etc will do once they start utilizing stuff like pathtracing in their engine.

I think what the “remaster debate” always misses is who they are for. A remaster/upgrade like the TLOU games isn’t meant to make doubters play it, and it isn’t meant to make everyone go and replay them. The upgrades or remasters are made for new buyers and for the hardcore fans. New buyers get a great looking shiny version - and hardcore fans like myself with Horizon 1 and 2 will replay them and buy the upgrades, just because the games are great. I’ve replayed both Horizons three times or more, I will play them again, and I will buy whatever upgrade may come for Zero Dawn and replay it again… It just seems that a lot of people feel almost like they have to buy a remaster and therefore feel shortchanged or conned by them. Exactly who it’s for. I like remasters cuz i like revisiting the games i love with a new coat of paint, but, like movie remakes, the idea is to hook new fans. It’s there, new, in their face, instead of a retro game they’ll research and wonder if it’s something they will like. And Sony was smart cuz they lined up Part 1 with TLOU show and it was a double whammy of success because of the new fans.

My main counterargument to this is that the tlou2 remaster and tlou remake were pointless at least on ps5, since both tlou remastered and tlou2 are completely playable and those projects took away time and resources which could have been used for actually new games. Also, on the front of TLOU remake on pc, it would have been cheaper and easier to just port TLOU Remastered to the platform, than a full on remake missing the factions mode

I very much agree but I am upset that naughty dog has spent the last 4 years doing a remake and a remaster. At least remake uncharted 1 or 2. That would actually be needed. Again I agree with you but I just think it’s lazy when it’s not needed. With the horizon games it’s not either. I’ve played the first twice and dlc and second one and dlc once but as a fan of those games I want something new. Those games can’t be that much better. Just make new things. Sony is starting to play things so safe.

Dont forget that Xbox also had Mass Effect , Bioshock (timed) , L4D and The Witcher 2 as console exclusives in the 360 era. Microsoft really should have gone in harder with some of those partnerships, especially Mass Effect since theg actually published the game. Imagine if they retained rights to the entire franchise. The fumbling of keeping Remedy also sad. Their handling of IP and Studios just hasn't been the best Also Oblivion was timed exclusive on 360 as well as Morrowind on OG Xbox being a console exclusive.

My favorite is when people proceed to list their hardware and the amount of FPS they get which is often extremely cherry picked at best and complete fabrication at worst. I think what they do is pick the highest FPS they have ever seen while playing the game, which could be looking at the sky and say thats the amount of FPS they get in the game. The hilarious part about it all is that all hardware is very well documented here on KZfaq lol so its easy to just see what the actual performance is.

You hit the nail on the head, John. I specifically got the Xbox 360 as my first ever console (with my own money) for Mass Effect as that was initially an Xbox exclusive. Before this, I was a PC gamer mainly. I played a lot of games on the 360, including CoD, Gears of War, and many, many more, that I would not have been able to play on my PC... Unfortunately, MS has not been able to replicate this. I got a PS4 (then PS4 Pro) late in that generation for Horizon Zero Dawn and Spider-Man. I had to get a PS5 simply because of the exclusives. I do, however, have a decent gaming PC with GamePass Ultimate so I can play most of the "Xbox" exclusives on there, so I have all bases covered. Unfortunately, the MS exclusives have not held my attention for too long. Tried Starfield, and it just didn't click for me. Forza Horizon was fun for some time, but other than that, it has been quite bland on the MS front, unfortunately, apart from some interesting indie games here and there on GPU. Edit: grammar and spelling

To each his own, I guess. You are missing out; the God of War games have some of the most polished and satisfying combat ever. Also some of the best story and high quality acting/setting. I might be biased as I have a young son, however, so the story resonated with me a bit more as it revolves around a father and son. Horizon Zero Dawn as well, was very good; even if he story is not the strongest, it was a fun ride. I actually got my PS4 for HZD after my colleagues could not stop talking about it at work. And this is before we even get to Spider-Man 1 & 2, the Uncharted series, and I can go on and on... I still have Ghost of Tsushima (arguably the most beautiful PS4 game), and Horizon Forbidden West (apparently the most beautiful PS5 game yet) in my backlog. Looking forward to play them both eventually. Basically, IMHO, Sony has MS beat hands down on console exclusive games, which I believe is the general consensus amongst the gaming community, as John said in the video.

Firstly, I want to thank you for your very insightful comment. The lack of punctuation/grammar says all I need to know about state of mind when you made the comment. I know you were probably trolling - and rude as your comment was, I curious and actually thought that maybe you are right. I thought I'd check the actual facts rather than just take word for it - so I played around with AI for the first time to answer the question for me. So, without further ado, according to Bard (Google's AI sytem), the PS games that have since come to PC are: | | PlayStation Release Date | PC Release Date | | |---|---|---|---|---| | | 2019-11-08 | 2020-07-14 | | | | 2017-02-28 | 2020-08-07 | | | | 2019-04-26 | 2021-05-18 | | | | 2018-04-20 | 2022-01-14 | | | | 2015-10-09 | 2022-07-15 | | | | 2021-08-23 | 2023-01-28 | | | | 2018-09-07 | 2022-08-12 | | | | 2020-11-12 | 2022-08-12 | | The average time difference between PS and PC release is 1,086.25 days. So, while you are in saying thatI can play the above PS games I would have had to wait for an average of about 3 years before it is possible. Oh, also, this list does not include games that are yet to release on PC - God of War Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2 to name but two. However, as I enjoy mostly single player, story driven games, I place more value on being able to play some games on release or a few months after when the physical game price goes down, and I can always share/resell the game to get some money back - an option that has not existed on PC a very long time - I am willing to bet you were not even alive when Physical games were around for PC. If you would have bothered to read my comment above, I play with my son, who has grown up playing the Spider-Man games - much easier to do on Playstation than on PC. I've allowed him to play Minecraft on PC in the last year, but before that, he was only allowed on the PS/Switch as he had his own account set up with no online connection etc. Try telling a young child that's excited for a game(Spider-Man / Miles Morales / Spider-Man 2) that they can't play that game that's out already because they have to wait for PC release...by that time, most of the story is leaked online and the magic is gone. I could go on, but my brain can only handle so much due to the brain rot as you say... TLDR: Yes, some games that are initially "PS exclusive" are (eventually) released on other platforms (PC), but I value being able to play games sooner for story purposes, so mostly choose to play those games on PS.

But the author has a lot of very interesting information in the mod description, and some posts, going into quite some detail on what RR actual does in the background. He also provides a huge ini file with hundreds of tweakable parameters giving a lot of insight to how PT is implemented in cyberpunk. This could make and interesting video for Alex. Ghost of Tsushima isn’t on PC despite releasing within the same timeframe as TLOU2 and it got a directors cut/remaster as well. I feel things like this are indicative of whether a sequel is to exist or not. If uncertain/not to be they won’t release it on PC or it will be delayed effectively indefinitely (not necessarily 100% just whenever the timing is to seem right) it’s a pattern I’ve noticed for a while that people seemingly ignore.
