DF Retro returns with a detailed look at one history's greatest shooters - Contra 3: The Alien Wars. John goes in-depth on how this classic SNES shooter works, what makes it brilliant and how the astonishing Game Boy port compares. Then it's on to the controversial Game Boy Advance conversion, including its bizarre method of borrowing content from Contra Hard Corps on Genesis/Mega Drive...

The turtle boss use another snes effect that is not very well known, that is the per tile scroll adjust. It's the same one that is used to do the yoshi island fuzzy effect.
@MaxwelThuThu
@MaxwelThuThu 5 жыл бұрын
It looks like the GBA doesn't have this effect, instead they used sprites for the head/neck and the "GBA mode 7" to the shell. I remember the Yoshi Island on GBA also using another trick to make this same effect on Touch Fuzzy Gets Dizzy, like a tile modification. The SNES version is waaay more smooth.
@dan_loup
@dan_loup 5 жыл бұрын
The shell could be a sprite as well. GBA has this neat trick where it can turn every sprite into a "mini mode 7". But it indeed has no tile scroll.

100% this if you're reading this, John. I love the use of Quads on the Saturn and absolutely loved seeing the emulator disable VDPs to show the nonsense that the devs turned into visual magic. There's also...something about that series, it was the first time as a child playing a game that I could imagine the much larger and real alien world that these people and dragons lived in.

Lovely video! I still personally think Konami's SNES days were some of the best, with games like Super CV4, Turtles in Time, and this one. Not only were they genuinely great games, but they also showcased the SNES hardware effectively, like the Mode7 scaling in both this game and SCV4. Those soundtracks too, they were CLEAN for the SNES, the console that usually gets downvoted for its "muddy sound", all a factor of the limited soundchips. They stand right up there among the likes of Mega Man X, Plok!, and Super Mario RPG. I'd even go as far as to say that the SNES is one of my favourite consoles ever, just so many great games developed for that system. Please keep up the good work, John. I'm eagerly awaiting to see the next episode of DF Retro!

Big Blue Frontend - You hit it in the head! I grew up with the NES, but the Super Nintendo and GameCube Nintendo are two of my all time favorite Nintendo home consoles with the Nintendo Switch quickly moving up on the charts. I miss those days of genuine game design and having several AAA titles constantly being release. KONAMI/CAPCOM ruled that era and were consistent.

I believe it was known as Gryzor in European arcades. The computer ports were probably based on that version and the NES version being re-branded as Probotector.
@JohnnyUndaunted
@JohnnyUndaunted 5 жыл бұрын
It depended on the platform. The two arcade games were Gryzor and Super Contra (the second game kept the original name in Europe), while the console versions were released as Probotector until Contra: Legacy of War. The C64, Speccy and Amstrad versions were based on the arcade title.
@todesziege
@todesziege 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the Probotector name was only used for console and handheld releases; computer and arcade versions had other names and no robots. The last time the Probotector name was used to my knowledge was when Operation C was included as part of the Konami GB Classics series on Game Boy Color, though it was Probotector without robots.

I paid around £90 for the Japanese import of Contra 3 in central London when it first launched in Japan and then spent the next month or so playing it pretty much every day. This was when the Konami name meant something and you could pretty much buy any of their SNES games and expect something great even if you had no idea what the game actually was about. All the titles mentioned in this video were great (actually I could take or leave Gradius) but I'd like to give a shout out to Tiny Toon Adventures which was one of the best looking and most creative cartoon platformers I ever played on SNES.

Incredible work as always, John! Regarding the GBA Contra III, the issues you pointed out always stuck out to me and as a result I never could stomach pushing past the first Hard Corps stage. It's a shame because visually it still looks pretty nice. Seeing the footage from later in the game it looks like it gets even worse gameplay-wise the farther in you get, the game just simply isn't suited as a straight conversion with the GBA's lower resolution. The whole thing needed to be tweaked pretty heavily.

I really needed a show like this to learn more about it, as I never had a NES back in the day, nor did I play it any more than a brief demo in the shops.
