In this video, we have a look at the brand new DF54, a budget king in the world of espresso grinding. Never before have we seen an espresso grinder at this price, with flat burrs, and certainly not with such a solid build. This machine comes with 54mm espresso tuned burrs, metal build, a 150 watt motor, single dosing, and even a de-ionizer to reduce static!
It really is a no brainer to recommend. I think this is going to quickly change the landscape of the budding barista market.

I love my DF64 gen 2. Had it for a few months now. I wanted low retention. Single dose. And something that would do espresso and filter. And not to much static. Thus the DF64 G2 was my choice. This however would looks like a smaller version of that. Given the price i wil recommend this to friends over the heavier price of the bigger version.

I said it on another video, but this is the grinder that I didn't know I was waiting for. There is nothing "wrong" with my ESP but I think I'd like the adjustability and workflow on this better. Really wish that was available a couple of years ago. I started out with a Mignon Facile for about $150 more, then spent another $100 on a bellows hopper and an updated dial system. Works out ok but really have to work the bellows to get all the retention out and still holds on to about .2g you can see switch from light to dark roast. I've added the new DF64 gen II and it's great so would expect this to perform similarly.

As someone who is new to electric grinders, this looks like what I need. The Breville is a great price but probably a bit more complex than what I need. I don’t care so much about the grind time as much as I care about the single dose setup. There’s one setting so I can concentrate on the most appropriate grind for the machine. I think I will pair it with the Breville dual boiler unit.

Servus Tom, Thank you for the awesome review! I’ve also read your blogpost about this machine and in the end you state that “for that [price in Germany] you could get a Eureka Mignon Manuale, Classico, or nearly a Specialita”, which makes it sound like those could be the better deal. The DF54 currently is 330€, the Eureka Mignon Zero costs about the same here. Which one would you recommend getting? For my use case I highly value low retention and build quality. Or would it make more sense to spend a bit more and go for the DF64 Gen2 (490€), EMIL T64 (450€), or Eureka Single Dose (560€)? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

I am excited at this option! Thank you for sharing. We have the SK40: I was excited to get a stepless grinder that was affordable. Control was really good for grind size. The only disappointment is that I thought the flavor is a bit muddled. We use mostly light to medium roast single origin and want the unique flavors to come through. I know flat burrs are more recommended for this, but we couldn't afford 500 for one. In your opinion, does this 54 mil flat burr improve flavor enough to notice from the SK40? Can you do a comparison of the two, seeing as they are priced in the same ballpark? Thank you!

The build looks similar to the other DF series. Since you mentioned a DF83, I own a DF83v2. I have consistentcy issues with it. Meaning, light-medium roast, I find I have to adjust the grind size on back to back shots by a significant amount. After about 6 grind sessions I can go from 8 down to 4. I’m wondering if the DF54 behaves similarly? I never figured out the problem with the DF83 but am guessing it might be heat related. This looks like a neat grinder and I might be tempted if I did not own the Baratza Vario W+, which I find great for batch brewing.

Often wandered what the impact is of the screws within the burrs. The burr cutting edges and geometry are so carefully engineered but yet they then have great holes, edges and screw heads where the screws are. Is this just a shortcut/cost saving compared to putting the screws somewhere else? Or does it really not matter to the resulting grinds?
@TomsCoffeeCorner

They need the holes to mount the burrs to their carriers. There are however some grinders with ghost burrs, which are mounted differently. But that's also more expensive...

Hi Tom it seems that im still on the fence weather to get df54 or varia VS3, all i can say is in my country the DF54 is cheaper compared to varia vs3, im a little bit worried about the retention on df54 based on the post i read in reddit. Varia got almost zero retention but its a conical burr grinder. I only drink latte twice a day using picopresso setup. tired of hand grinding thats why im looking for an electric grinder.

In the USA they almost always state prices without VAT even for private consumers, in the EU there is a law to state prices with VAT, therefore, when you talk about prices, the prices seem to be mostly lower in the USA as consumers are also used to stating the prices without VAT, while in the EU we say the prices with VAT. Encore was not really intended for espresso, but Encore ESP is solid all-rounder for the price. This one is probably better, but the price including postage and import taxes will be close to DF64. Now, for me, DF64 is a bit too big. I am still deciding between this one and DF64V, but DF64V is expensive and there's a problem with static. Nothing is perfect... One more disadvantage, at the moment, there are only stock burrs, and nobody knows if there will be some third party burrs available. Tough decision...

The images in the video show the screw holes in the df54 burrs are pushed out more towards the outer edge compared to the eureka's, so it's very unlikely the Specialita burrs would fit...
