**DISCLAIMER** This is a demo and run-through of the DFAM Thing by Serendipity Synthesizers. I have no connection to the company, nor do I know the ongoing pricepoint or development status since creating this video. Here's the webpage: thewessens.net/DFAMThing/DFAMT...
(sidenote: I also sold my DFAM & Thing soon after making this vid, so it is no longer in my possession!)
The DFAM Thing is a device that makes the DFAM play much more nicely with other gear - via MIDI or CV, the ability of the Thing is pretty awesome. It holds its own across massive tempo ranges, allows the DFAM to be clocked or fully sequenced by MIDI, and a whole lot more. The developer is making additions and improvements to the Thing fairly regularly.
Two corrections:
1. when I was describing "MIDI Mode": this mode uses all white keys but ALSO includes Bb, for a total of 8 notes. It also uses any range/octave of these MIDI notes, meaning any C (e.g. C2, C3, C4, etc) will trigger Step 1, any D (e.g. D2, D3, D4, etc) will trigger Step 2, etc. To use this mode without MIDI clock, switch the Thing into "External" mode to prevent clock from re-triggering steps
2. When I discussed the different sequencer modes I described "Shuffle" mode as having a set pattern that I hadn't worked out. Serendipity have told me that every time Shuffle mode is "clicked" (using the pot switch) it will create a NEW set of 8 steps - which is even cooler IMO. Kind of like a Turing machine in Loop mode.

having an audio rate sequencer is great for fm effects or waveshaping with the velovity/pitch pots and using it as a 3rd oscilator. then just use a korg sq-1, or beatstep for sequencing

So if those triggers are MIDI mapped, any finger drum or MIDI kit can be used to trigger it. DFAM plus KMI BopPad and the Beatstep Pro, this makes the DFAM actually into bit of kit I want now :) The Subharmonicon goes at about 20k bpm too btw, I wonder if the DFAM Thing could add any features when used with the Subharm?
@briberysproductionhouse
@briberysproductionhouse Жыл бұрын
That's exactly right! It's mono, of course, but you can absolute turn it into a MIDI-triggered mono-monster. I don't have a Subharm so not sure what would be needed there, but you can email the dev on the website above and suggest things - friendly guy!

Pretty cool device, but have you seen the mafd? I don’t think there is any better option for a dfam companion to integrate into daw or dawless setups. It can be moded right to the dfam, powered by usb, and offers midi and more at a great price.

Hey Danny, Yep, I know of the Sonoclast devices (MAFD and RFD). They both look really great, but do quite a bit LESS than what this "DFAM Thing" does, so a disagree that it is the best route. Things like the sequencer direction modes, seq length, clock division, etc, can't be done on the Sonoclasts. You would also need both to do MIDI and reset functions, while "Thing" is all-in-one. The "Thing" is also cheaper than MAFD, and can be easily updated via USB. So, quite a bit of crossover, but "Thing" has quite a bit more functionality at a lower price

I´m also getting one of this, but when? how much and why so expensive 😉? NOTE: it Would be great if it could be attached to the DFAM side just as the Sonoclast.

If I understand correctly it advances the step so quickly that the trigger doesn’t sound. This implies that the thing must maintain its own sense of the dfam current step. As you show it can get out of sync with dfam which you need to manually correct. I’m surprised this works as well as it appears!
@briberysproductionhouse
@briberysproductionhouse Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's my understanding of how it works. Because the DFAM's internal sequencer can run so quickly, sending extremely quick pulses to advance the step is very possible. The procedure for setup is: - manually advance DFAm to step 1 - use the "Align Step 1" function on "Thing" - hit play on your MIDI sequencer and it will "remember" step 1, even when you stop/start the sequencer There are a few things that can put it out of time, but this is mostly when you are hammering it hard and switching seq modes, length, and extreme speeds. For "typical" operation I've found it to be rock solid. Since making this video, the dev (Ken) has updated the clock div/mlt mode so that it changes in time with MIDI clock, so it stays solid with those changes. I think he has some other updates in the works too!

C'est possible de faire du ratcheting ?
@briberysproductionhouse
@briberysproductionhouse Жыл бұрын
If you program it from an external MIDI sequencer you can do what you want with ratcheting, but with the native sequencer you have to run some tricks on tempo/run/advance to hack your way through ratchets. MIDI programming using "MIDI mode" on this device is the way to go I think.

On the official Moog Music website, the proper pronunciation is a short "O" sound in Moog. Sounds like vogue or rogue.

I live about an hour away from the Moog factory & store, as well as the Moogseum in Ashville, NC and can tell you that all the owner/employees pronounce Moog, so that it does in fact sound like rogue. My guess is that they would know best :-)

@@dp2123 I pronounced it like you did for many years also. I never knew there was even a discrepancy concerning the pronunciation of his name until recent years. I think from what I know about him, he is German and Moog is a German name. Although I could be wrong.

@fotoniknoise
@fotoniknoise Жыл бұрын
how on earth the MAFD is more functional? Did you watch the video? MAFD is something a bit more of a MIDI-CV converter. This thing takes the DFAM to a whole new level of a synth!
@bry2k
@bry2k Жыл бұрын
I guess they both have different uses. The MAFD (particularly the "Luxe" edition) have pitch bend and MIDI CC to CV conversion, which is definitely very useful, while this one has the built in "modes" and and the sequence length feature, plus the buttons. Both good tools in the toolbox!

Kinda lame that you have to buy extra gear to get basic functionality like this. (Especially for something that's 750 euros now!) Some of the design choices of the DFAM are just bizarre. Microscopic knobs, no sequencer reset, no sequencer scale length, weird knob layout and NO MIDI?!. It's still an incredibly inspiring instrument but still, these were just dumb design choices that helped nobody. Sometimes the DFAM feels like a rushed product to me.
