In my review of DFAM and the comparison to Mother-32, I mentioned a few features that Mother-32 had and DFAM didn’t. The ability to have different length sequences - either less or more than 8 steps, the ability to sequence notes, not just continuous pitches, an LFO, glide and ratchets.
And as you know me, if a feature is on my wishlist, I’m going to do my best to make it happen.
This video focuses on the beauty of eurorack and semi-modular synths - where either through internal patching or with the help of a handful of modules, you can get almost everything you want.
Alongside Moog’s DFAM, I use Polyend Seq, Expert Sleepers Disting in Quantize and Slew modes, and a cool new analog quad LFO module called VariFO from a new modular company called VoicAs (I’ll be reviewing this in an upcoming video because it has a few cool features I’ve never seen before - here's their site: voicas.audio)

This is an old ass video but just something for all those still watching this to consider: most if not all the stuff on Loopop's wishlist at the beginning, even a sort of glide, can be achieved with a Beatstep Pro. The big difference is that the BSP completely bypasses the internal sequencer for pitch and volume information. The BSP itself is tuned chromatically which means you can achieve pitch quantization by patching BSP pitch out to DFAM pitch in. The BSP CV outputs and its sequencer work REALLY well with the DFAM. You can send pitch, gate and velocity information from BOTH(!!) sequencers to practically any patch point on the DFAM. You can even patch the DFAM's internal velocity and pitch to any other point you want and sequentially modulate the chosen patch point if the BSP is feeding it velocity/pitch information.

Nice, I'd imagine 0xi One or Hapax could help out here in spades as well. 0-Ctrl as well (though it's not chromatic). But the cost point is the main one for me. BSP is flat out more affordable then a skiff + power supply + 4 or 5 modules if you don't want to get sucked in like that to eurorack :)

If I had to pick a single moment when I went from simple DFAM owner to developing a fascination with modular, it was this video, perhaps in late December. ‘Twas a tipping point. Now I’m making music just about daily; spending too much; learning a new, ever-changing instrument; and scratching my itch. In short: joy. Thanks, man!

Semi-modulars do a terrific job of introducing folks to synthesis and patching. Playing with friends, even a small number of modules like in this video, unlocks semis and launches them straight into outer space. Excellent job here! You should do a video like this with all the popular semis!

PSA for Quantization. He sets the pitch control switch to the center (OFF). It took me way too long realize that, and I was not sure why my results were so bad with Scales. He doesn't make the change on camera, so it may not obvious that it's necessary. Its just switched in the next frame. I believe that if it's not off, voltage is added from the pitch sequencer to the quantized voltage, which results in a non-chromatic tone.

Trovarsi - check out the Intellijel uScale II. It's pretty simple to use and has a secondary output which you can set to an interval. So you could, for example, bring the pitch out of DFAM into uScale II, send quantized pitch 1 (root) to VCO 1 IN, and quantized pitch + 7 semitones (fifth) to VCO 2 IN.

Bro thank you so much for always putting out the highest quality reviews and tutorials. Quick question.. is there another way other than eurorack to quantize the DFAM? Any semi-modular options that come to mind? Wondering if patching it to a Mother or to a Minibrute 2S could make this possible. Still new to semi-mod & modular

I'm not sure if the mother 32 or Minibrute would do that (possibly) but the korg sq1 is an inexpensive option that can send quantized pitches... A surprisingly powerful yet simple and intuitive sequencer which is affordable new and abundant and cheap second hand. Enjoy

Nice vid, do you have reccomendations for newbies who start out with the dfam as there first modular? I think the mother-32 is a good match, but what modules would you recommend to put in the limited space of the moog case, that would extend the mother 32 and the dfam? The Disting from expert sleepers? or maybe Maths from Makenoise? An amp to get output and headphones connected (Black Output from erica seems nice, but is very wide)?
@loopop
@loopop 6 жыл бұрын
h ag thanks! My top recommendation for first module is ES-8 from Expert Sleepers, if you’re open to the idea of trying out modules in software form - this will help you figure out exactly what modules you need. Please watch my Hybrid Modular video for more info. Maths is nice but will take up a lot of space. Try the modules in virtual form in VCVRack and then buy the ones you want in physical form. Makes sense?

Thank you for another very helpful and informative tutorial!

Yes, should work just fine! DFAM doesn't have MIDI inputs, so you'll need a MIDI to CV converter if you're using a regular MIDI sequencer, but Grandmother has CV and Gate outs, so you're good to go

tthanks for the video. i have tried with my dfam what you have explain at 1:36 (change the length of the sequencer by patch the pitch out with the tempo in) and i'll active only the first three step (putting the pitch at max value on the last five step) but seems that the step one of the three step don't sound. The sequencer is active but the first step seems quite mute. At the same time, once i've change again the length of the sequencer (from three step to two or at four step) the first step don't run again, so seems that are only one or three step on. Love your videos, loopop. I have a DFAM and, sure enough, it is making me very curious about modular. Do you know whether the DFAM's Trigger Output can serve as a clock source for a Make Noise Rene? I feel like it should but the Rene manual says the clock input "width greater than 2.5 ms" while the DFAM manual says the trigger output is "roughly 1ms in width." Thank you!

Hi Matthew, I think it's possible to use an enveloppe generator to simulate a trigger-to-gate converter, A-140 from Doepfer can handle this. Anyway I think the Make Noise Rene will be fine with the DFAM clock
@MatthewMcFeely
@MatthewMcFeely 4 жыл бұрын
@@trapcodien Thanks. I went ahead and got a Rene, and if you (or anyone else who sees this) are interested, it works. The DFAM Trigger out serves as a clock source for a Make Noise Rene despite the width disparity. But that's not actually how I use it. Instead, I sampled the DFAM Trigger out with my Octatrack, and I send the sample out one of the Cue outs on the Octatrack to serve as a clock source for one Rene channel. This is cool because it allows me to do weird irregular clock patterns depending on where I place triggers on that track of the Octatrack. I can even do boutique swings using the retrigger and retrigger time functions on the Octatrack. Moreover, I can clock a second Rene channel with the other Cue out, either using a second Octatrack track or with the same Octatrack track depending on my parameter lock on the Balance setting on the Amp page of the track (since the clocks originate from the Cue left and right).

Someone said CV pitch input would override the pitch knobs but the manual says otherwise ... is there an easier way to do it? Super intereseting that the Disting alone can make the DFAM so much more melodical! Thanks for reminding me :)

Hi loopop! Your videos are extremely helpful and thanks for all of your hard work! I would appreciate it if you could please clarify one important point. In the back of the DFAM, there is an audio output. Are the modules being layered into the audio output of the Moog DFAM into your audio interface, or is the sound from the DFAM coming out of the VCA into the ES-8 and the sound ends up through the USB connector into the DAW? I am confused based on the cable set-up in that I do not see a separate audio mixer (i.e. ALM Tangle Quartet Eurorack module) where a 1/8in to 1/4in TRS cable converter is used. Thanks for your help!
@loopop
@loopop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey - I don't know which point in the video you're referring to, but the same audio comes out both the VCA output in the front and the line audio in the back (probably different levels)

@@loopop Hey loopop! Around the point where you show how to map the Disting Mk4 with the DFAM for quantization. So, I gather that the Disting is quantizing the output sound of the DFAM, and the final sound is being sent out from the back of the DFAM's audio output. Is that correct? Also, in this case, what is the purpose of the VCA output from the DFAM being inputted into the ES-8? Thanks for the clarification!
@loopop
@loopop 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tidewater500 I need a specific timeline to be sure, but DISTING doesn’t quantize audio, it quantizes control voltage. My guess is es 8 is just acting as an audio interface into a computer
@Tidewater500
@Tidewater500 3 жыл бұрын
@@loopop Awesome. Yes, it all makes sense now. The point of reference is 4:20. Earlier I was just confused where the final audio source would go after the control voltage was quantized. On different Eurorack rigs, some sound designers have an audio mixer module in which the instruments are outputted from their VCA ports into the mixer. This might be useful if trying to combine / layer the DFAM with a Subharmonicon and only have one output signal instead of two separate channels. After I get my Eurorack parts in the mail, I will try the appropriate configurations. I just wanted to make sure that I understood how the components operated before purchasing them and making unnecessary mistakes; however, as I have learned before, with systems like these, it is best to try them out directly instead of solely relying on a theoretical approach. Thank you for your help loopop! I will be more than happy to support your work with a donation. Keep up the good work with your reviews and instructional series!

DFAM doesn’t have midi so you’ll need to find a way to convert analog clock to midi. Instinctively I’d it with VCV but there’s probably a product that solves this problem…

There's noise, and external audio. But at LFO range VCO1 can still FM VCO2 while patched to something else, and if you switch Pitch to MOD VCO1 you can get some really interesting sounds.
