I did not know this poem, so, on hearing it read by you for the first time, I was struck by an impression of words being plaited into a perfect ribbon of flowing thought. By using a limited vocabulary, re-using words in subtly different contexts Lawrence guides us to follow the emotionless rain down through the rhymes and repetitions to the tears about the pain of the dead, the slain. The black leaves fall without pain but by the end of the piece he has made us feel that the rain is really the tears of heaven for the slain. Rain was, of course, a major feature of the life of the Tommy in the trenches. To keep their spirits up, soldiers would make up their own words to popular songs or hymns. One well known one was to the tune of "Holy, holy, holy". It went : "Raining, raining, raining, Always bloody well raining......."

That's a beautiful way to put it. Almost as if the words too are being harvested or reaped.

Lawrence went to live in Zennor, eagles nest, in Cornwall, with his second wife, frieda von Richtenhofen. When they hung their washing out in the garden British intelligence believed that they were sending signals to German U-boats. Lawrence got so sick of this he and frieda Moved to taos in New Mexico where he is buried. "kangeroo" is a tremendous work. Life is very strange and uncanny. Yet very beautiful, esp when one separates the wheat from the chaff. Noel ♥️

Coleridge, William and Dorothy Wordsworth were also suspected of being spies for a time. Life is indeed strange and uncanny.

@@DrOctaviaCox yes. It is. For sure. I'm currently working on a collection of sonnets, entitled "A Paper Pygmalion" been ongoing for a number of years. So far written about fifty. They just flow out of me, effortlessly, as though I'm channeling. Get the first quatrain out, and the rest just seems to come automatically, as though it's all ready there. Uncanny and inexplicable. For many years I've lived without a TV or other modern day distractions. Just a radio. And, more or less, hermetically sealed myself. Doing so has paid great dividends. As wordsworth says in the opening line of his famous sonnet, "the world is too much with us" wonder what he'd think now?!! Did you know wordsworth was often mistaken for a vagrant? As his personal grooming was the very last thing on his mind (obviously) and what with all the fell climbing he did he'd be clarted up to the eyeballs. Beethoven was even arrested for vagrancy. And had to be rescued by his patron, Prince Galitsin. May I recommend to you the heliger dankgesang, the adagio molto, third movement from his 15th string quartet, opus 132. It, along with the four other late string quartets, is considered to be one of the pinnacles of Western civilization. Heliger danksgesag: holy thanksgiving in a lydian mode. Earth shatteringly sublime. Seems as though. Beethoven had finally transcended the human condition

Charles Rennie McIntosh The celebrated architect, designer and painter , known throughout Europe , Made his name in Glasgow. During WW1 finding life difficult ( You cannot be a prophet in your own land) . Moved with his wife to Suffolk, he like Lawrence lived by the sea in a small cottage. Every evening in the dark , he would light his lamp in the garden. To allow visitors to find his front door so to speak. He was arrested , taken to London suspected of spying. CRM as he is known , had been before the war , involved in a project to design a church in Austria. The Police found letters written in German discussing the project. This coupled with CRMs strong Glasgow accent ( The police in Suffolk thought to be German.) His wife had to go to Whitehall to see officials there to obtain his release. Which she did. You to this day can visit tea houses developed by CRM, if you are ever in Glasgow you should visit them, Hardly changed , since the 19th century.
