I recently posted the video above wherein I stated I have grown uneasy about recommending routine DHA supplementation for vegans. In the video, I said that I had become unsure what possible adverse effects the supplement might be facilitating, and, until I learned more about this subject, I would use this calendar year to optimize my ALA intake with daily ground flaxseeds and an otherwise ALA-rich diet. I plan, in December, to reassess the state of testing methods and see which test, if any, could give me meaningful information about my DHA status. I am not saying that DHA supplements are evil nor that people who take them or advocate their use are wrong or that I have closed the door on their use, especially for people with diabetes, hypertension and advanced age. I’m just saying that, at this time, the science is not mature enough to permit me to feel comfortably giving advice on DHA supplementation.
It was not unexpected that such a video would cause distress in my friend and colleague, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a passionate advocate of DHA for vegans as a preventative against dementia, which he reports having seen frequently in his practice. Dr. Fuhrman decried my lack of scientific evidence to support my concerns. To that end, I call your attention to the following article that kindled my concerns (1) that demonstrated that the elevation in EPA levels commonly seen with DHA supplementation is not, as widely believed, from “backfilling,” wherein 22-carbon atom DHA somehow turns back into 20-carbon-atom EPA. On the contrary, this study shows that the elevation of EPA is demonstrated here is the result of DHA inhibiting EPA clearance from the blood, thus, producing EPA accumulation in the tissues. This concerns me greatly, as it is a red flag saying to me, “If swallowing pre-formed DHA is backing up EPA metabolism, what else is it doing?”
Compound-specific isotope analysis reveals no retroconversion of DHA to EPA but substantial conversion of EPA to DHA following supplementation: a randomized control trial. www.ncbi.nlm.n...
I also found evidence confirmed that taking DHA supplements increases cell permeability and I it makes me wonder if that increases permeability to carcinogens.
These concerns were enough for me to question if I really know what I am doing as I tell people to take DHA on a daily basis - and, until I can be confident that my advice is doing no harm, including making the cells more permeable to carcinogens, I have, for now, decided to hold off on my recommendation to take supplemental DHA. If people want to continue taking it, I can understand why that would seem reasonable, as there is evidence supporting that stance, as well.
I know Dr. Fuhrman’s condemnation of me as a physician has been very vehement. It will not dim my friendship with or appreciation of Dr. Fuhrman as a man of character and a fine doctor who has the best interest of his patients at heart. (Likewise with with my friends and colleagues Dr. Joel Kahn and Dr. Michael Greger who probably also will disagree with my clinical decision at this time. They are all respected and cherished lights in the field of plant-based nutrition and my appreciation for them remains undimmed.)
I appreciate all, including Dr. Fuhrman, who are helping me find my way to the truth about this important, complex and subtle subject.

I think that is perfect! Even if the adventis eat some fish. I dont think they eat it everyday. So taking omega 3 pill once a week or so is perfect. Its way more problematic to have to much Omega 6... thats why everyone worrying about omega 3..... if we eat some omega 3 sources and maybe a pill once a week of 250mg.. its perfect...

So, at 51 years old, 3 1/2 years plant-based, have only had fish twice, maybe three times since about 1976 after a bad reaction to salmon, apparently I should be showing some signs of mental deficiency and/or other health concerns. I'm not. I've never supplemented with fish oil and didn't start flax until 2016. Based on a recent class I took with Janice Stanger, it is my understanding that flax is perfectly acceptable and most people can convert. One says take them, another says you don't need to. Guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.

I’m on the Dr. Furhman side. I eat ground flax seeds daily but I also supplement with algae oil because I am somewhat concerned about the low conversion factor of Omega 3 fats especially for men. To me supplementing is the safer route as I don’t think the cancer risks are high as a whole food plant based vegan. Brain health is something I am a bit more concerned with so I take it as insurance. But honestly, what do I know? I’m not a doctor or an RD. Nor is there great research providing a consensus on this topic. I just figure many very long lived people eat lots of omega 3 rich foods (fish) and since I am a vegan and not getting as much of that essential fat I have gone higher on that side of supplementation and think it is likely the better bet. Small matter though as none of us is getting out of here alive. Try not to sweat the small stuff.

I had decided to go with foods for my DHA some months back. I have never seen a case that pills were better or safer than whole plant based foods. Foods are what we evolved with. I do take B12 but that is the only supplement I take, and that is because I know the natural sources of B12 have been eliminated from our environment. 26 years vegan. I suspect you are correct. The oldest vegans I know of still have sharp minds, and they don't take any DHA supplements

plenty of b12 in fermented oats and price... especially when you think about how the microbiome is what determines so much about b12 recycling.. theres alot more exposure than you think, just living in our own feces, the problem is when you eat shit foods and then the feces you are popping out in your environment are dangerous.. as true as it is that e are destroying the natural world, we really arent that removed from it still, aand there are plenty of foods one can eat to maximize b12 status.. ESPECIALLY sine a plant based diet is generally high in cobalt.

Seems more mention coming forth that various common isolated nutrient supplements are not effective or even downright dangerous. If liver dysfunction/damage could be perhaps inhibiting effective ALA>DHA conversion; wondering if sea greens should be consumed occasionally to obtain EPA/DHA? ..& if eating sea greens would not cause similar EPA buildup mentioned from supplements?

I sincerely appreciate this video! I am a firm believer in not taking any unnecessary vitamins and supplements. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. When I was a child I wanted to take Flintstones vitamins because all the other kids did. My mom refused telling me she had a friend whose son had a reaction because he was getting too much of something in the vitamin because his diet already provided it. I am very new to a WFPB diet but am doing a lot of research on nutrition so I can consume as much nutrients in my food rather than vitamins and supplements. Over the last 10 yrs I have tried to go vegetarian but did not do my homework on nutrition and ultimately fell off the vegetarian diet as I was not eating the correct nutrients nor was I supplementing my diet.

Or.... on an otherwise vegan diet, eat a small amount of clean fish each week, like sardines. They'll also give you B12, D3, K2, and other nutrients that are hard to find in a vegan diet. Dr. Fuhrman allows this in his nutritarian diet.

"Hussein (2005) states, 'The fact that DHA can be formed from ALA, albeit at a very low rate, but cannot be increased by increased dietary ALA suggests that DHA concentrations, at least in circulating phospholipid pools, are regulated to satisfy a relatively low metabolic demand that can be satisfied by the relatively low levels observed in vegans with no dietary DHA intake and with erythrocyte DHA levels lower than EPA' (p.278)." -- Tim Radak, DrPH MPH RDN, from his website

To Dr Klapper Good to have you on the job - this is all a messy business - all because we do not have the science. 1. NOTE: There is a missing reference in the description section under the video - could you update the section with including a link to the reference (so I and others can have a look at that/those study/ies - Regarding the comment "I found evidence confirmed that taking DHA supplements increases cell permeability and it makes me wonder if that increases permeability to carcinogens." 2. Secondly - could you write all the Human body Omega 3 levels tests - that you know of and then highlight the ones that you think make the short list as being maybe telling us something I would like to take this same deliberate approach you spoke of in the latter part of the video - before and after testing and eat perfectly and see what the results are after 12 months - before and after - but for that I would need the tests - so could you write down what the tests are called - how it is spelt exactly - so I can tell my chosen doctor specifically. I heard and factored in your comments about the serious problems with the currently available tests - I would look to gather the information - before and after - on both the tests and then see whether there is anything they give.

do the research yourself, this guy recommends Dr Fuhrmans multi vitamin and thinks its important to supplement k2 and is the only doctor who recommends methylcobalamin when the science doesnt really support that, he also has some crazy made up claims about human history that are just silly, average doctors are dangerous, but even vegan doctors are all crazy in there own way.. literally every one of them have there own crazyness going on whether its Dr Mcdougall, Dr Greger, Pam Popper, Dr Fuhrman, Dr Milton Mills.. all nutts.. its a hard time to be vegan.. but the past sounds like it was even worse, im a 5 year vegan for the animals but even i am REALLY questioning this diet lately, its getting pretty ridiculous
@xcast1
@xcast1 4 жыл бұрын
The supplements are very different - you can't simply question them all as a bundle. There are separate videos on this channel too - and for D you find at least texts / interviews with Dr. Klaper. No doctor - vegan or not - questions the need of a special reliable B12 source for vegans. If you do around with chlorella, unwashed self-grown vegetables or whatever, you should at least make regular blood tests. You need extra D when you don't get significant sun (sun beyond 35° altitude ) on significant portions of the skin - regularly for at least about 10min / day depending on you skin color. DHA: In addition to the things told in this video, those 250mg DHA+EPA supplements are questionable also, because the daily need by the brain is just about 3mg - which is likely produced easily (3x) from ALA in the body, when ALA intake is beyond 1.5 .. 2g RDI. Those old assertions of "low conversion rate" etc. are all based on false or mostly even non-existing assumptions regarding real body internal requirements. Conversion is regulated and deliberately low, because DHA is highly unsatured and dangerous due to peroxidation. Massive amounts impair the immune systems, cause problems by blood thining etc. in healthy people.

@monkeygirl000 i meant vegan doctor i dont care about non vegan doctors they are even worse but i discovered yesterday that Mcdougall recommends every other type than cyano, ive also researched vegan nutrition and im not as happy as you are about it, eating specific foods for specific nutrients eg seaweed for iodine and taking supplements which are dangerous and need monitoring with regular blood tests and worrying about deficiencies isnt my thing and i cant accept it, im just a hard ass with a soft heart, ive been vegan 5 years without researching nutrition and was fine but now ive actually done research for the last year i dont think being vegan is a good idea for people like me, i dont do needles and supplements, you have to be a bit of a geek to be a healthy vegan imo, i want to be a healthy vegan but i refuse the rules so i probably shouldnt be vegan, researching nutrition is the worst thing ive ever done to myself cause its got me messed up even more than drugs did, suicidal even, every vegan doctor has different recommendations its irresponsible of them and costing me my life, i hate everyone at this point, just want to live naturally and not worry about nutrition but i know too much and dont know how to fix so yea.. fck everyone, fck vegans.. fck meat eaters. fck fckn everybody im done

Thank you so much for being open and constantly learning. That retardation of EPA due to preformed DHA is absolutely fascinating. This isolation of a fatty acid/nutrient/etc. reminds me of how isolated forms of B vitamins can apparently cause problems for people, which is why certain doctors recommend taking all the B vitamins together (even that, though, might be questionable except in certain cases).

Thank you, Dr Klaper ❤️. Quick question...do the chia seeds need to be ground as well to absorb the omega 3s? Your humility in admitting you have had to “jump horses” again because of your concerns and admitting don’t have all the answers at this time is admirable. Following the science is not always an easy or straight path with quick answers. Accurate testing of DHA levels is obviously problematic and I certainly hope some new testing is developed soon. 🥑I agree - thanks Dr. Klaper - we don't know enough. 🍎Dr. Klaper: what are you thoughts on heated versus unheated fats?🥦I have always taught my clients to avoid HEATING fats. My studies taught me that heated fats become carcongenic and react differently in the body than non-heated fats. Heated fats are also bad for clogging arteries and other ailments/diseases. 🍓So, for the past 25 years I have avoided heating, for example, nuts, seeds, avos; (and oils if I use them). Heated fats and raw fats are certainly not equal. I add high "fat-containing" foods like tahini, nuts, seeds, and minimal oils, to my meal once I've cooked the rest of the meal. I think Dementia has more with deep sleep to do, than with DHA. There is a TED series informing about sleep in several videos, and I will truly recommend them, also along with some TEDtalks about the topic.

Thanks for this awesome channel. With regards to the ground flax seed, does this not lower testosterone levels? Also, as a vegan is it recommended to supplement with creatine whilst doing lots of resistance training?

I'd love to get your thoughts on taking an iron supplement. I am 35, whole food plant based vegan and get 50 to 75% of the recommended daily dose of iron from my food I eat. Would you think a daily or weekly iron supplement be good for me to take?

Your thoughts on Sacha Inchi seeds known as starseed? I haven't heard any planned based doctors mention this but it's even higher in omega 3`s than flaxseed and they are delicious. I eat them as a snack and I now even make delicious starseed vegan parm replacing the cashews with starseeds in the recipe.

Thank you for the video. In regards to the flax, chia and hemp seed combo that you recommend, does the chia and hemp seed need to be ground too? I am aware the flax needs to be ground. Thank you!
