I do miss the days when you could just replace the brushes. So much cheaper repair honestly. I was lucky that when my starter was acting up, my local Napa Auto Care Center was able to just replace the contact points since they bought out the whole supply of parts from a defunct starter rebuild shop 5 years ago. I hate living in a throw away nation so if something can be fixed, rebuilt and reused while using quality parts and procedures sign me up.

if you do some digging you can still find starter brush sets. Look up the ACDelco E720A, Ive put a few of them in my personal vehicles and about $0.05 worth of high temp grease and had zero problems with them so far. Ive used them on Ford F150s, My Jeep Grand Cherokee, My sisters Nissan Pathfinder, and Xterras. worth a look, seems like that set fits almost everything.

You mite already know this but with there is a quick setting to set up the uscope and the amp clamp. Under the menu choose presets, highlight amp, left or right click till you see low amp in top right hand corner, press OK and hold till it loads. If successful it will say 100:1A in top left hand beside battery. That will have it set up for the 20A (100mV/A) scale. That way the amps will read right. Love the uscope!

My old Mercedes (OK Scotty Kilmer cool your jets) used to cut the blower fan when I took a right turn. I live in Scotland so ‘cooling’ is rarely needed but the lack of circulating warm air was sorely missed. It turned out that the fan motor brushes were sticking in their guides and when I took a right turn the transfer of weight of the armature caused it to shift enough on its bearings to disconnected the brushes from the commutator. Stripped out the motor, sprayed WD40 to lubricate the guides and it worked like a charm and has done so for over ten years.

Very good Eric. Never thought of troubleshooting a motor by current monitoring. As for your ripples in the good motor; When the brushes only touch one copper piece, current only flows through one winding. When the brush bridges the commutator gap the current flow increases because it is now flowing through 2 wingdings. Hence your ripple. As with others you have taught me a lot with your videos. Please keep up the good work. Merry Christmas to you and the family.

Yeah, the most stunning part of this is the fact that the motor could possibly be repaired...I guess they had some 1960s old new stock to get rid of at the factory. LOL Thanks Eric.

That's a pretty cool way to analyze a motors performance. That little scope is the smallest DSO I've seen! Not having a portable scope my method for diagnosing this type of intermittency would be to run a set of wires from the blower and plug them into my micronta (Radio Shack) analog multimeter set to dc volts and set on the passenger seat. No fluctuation in supply voltage then the motor is toast. That said believe me I like the more scientific approach for troubleshooting electronics and I need a smaller, more portable DSO. I'm not sure if you have an electronics background Eric but your basic knowledge of electronics is pretty impressive!

If you want to check the commutator segments, place your meter probes on the segments right next to each other and work your way around one segment at a time, so you trailing probe will go to the segment where your leading probe was and so on. typically, your values will be in the ohm range and be around the same value. Brushes can be replaced and vary in hardness, you can also sand them on a flat surface to fit the brush guide if they’re not quite the right size. Clean the commutator using a ladies soft flexible nail file to remove old brush residue, don’t overdo it. Some new brushes have a preformed curve to fit the comm and should be run in, on its lowest speed for a couple of hours to ensure good contact between comm and brush. If theres no preformed curve, you’ll need to run the motor in for a longer period.

You can get universal brush kits off e-bay. 10pc sets are a few bucks, get multiple kits and you pretty much have a brush set for anything. If not use a bigger size and custom shape it with a disc sander, or even sandpaper. They are super soft so it takes little time. You can save a lot of money on blower motors, cooling fans, and especially expensive window regulators. Well worth the $20 investment.

You can find all kinds of generic brushes on McMaster-Carr, that place is amazing if you really need something and have no clue where to get it, they have just about every size nuts bolt seal gasket hose clamp bearing and brush you could ever ask for. That being said I'm not really sure how you'd find the right sized brush, you could probably get close and guesstimate and it'd work alright as long as the dimensions were close. I would say definitely not worth the trouble or potential that the replacement would be missing a key or groove etc that held the brush in place, but on the other hand sometimes you need a brush for something you can't find that isn't made anymore.

Better to just put a new motor in. That commutator looks chewed. Great explanation of the ripple. I had to "fix" one in a Chevrolet Optra (Daewoo) for which we could not get a motor on short notice. Cold weather plus 3 kids is no way to travel when the blower fan doesnt work. The insides actually look exactly like the one you show here. Plenty of brushes left, but they were jammed in the holders, so I sanded them down a little.

Hey Eric, Thanks for taking the time to show why the old fan was junk. I’m glad you took the time. I usually always tear apart the bad part to see what caused the failure. One time I was pretty surprised at how lousy aftermarket stuff can be when I removed a starter from my friends Honda ATV we’d just replaced a few months earlier. I opened it up and after I pulled the armature out all the magnets that are supposed to be fixed to the outer case were all laying lose inside the case. We opted for a new set of brushes and put the old starter back into it. Starter works great 2 years later. I’m still flabbergasted at how the aftermarket starter worked at all. I never did bother to see if it was dorman or someone else competing with them.

My dad was an electrician in the 50's and 60's and he regularly replaced brushes in motors. As a result he had collected many brush sets which i now have. It is likely that there is a brush set in the collection that would work. Keeping old junk can have it's advantages.

Loved these videos about the blower motor diagnosis. It looked like the brushes don't just break contract between segments, but rather the next segment also begins to contact the brush, causing an extra bit of current to briefly flow until the first segment finishes. Either way kudos to your showing the before and after videos. Merry Christmas to the O family!

Hey Mr Eric, I have a video that you might consider doing. Example, I own 2002 Ford F-150 King Ranch and I would like to know how to change the wiring for the factory fog lights. They come on only when headlights are on and in the low beam setting. I'd like to wire them to come on with factory switch, but without the headlights having to be on, nor having them cancel out when you trigger the high beam on. Thanks and you were amazing with the video with Marie giving Mrs Amber the Ford Fusion. God bless you and your family this holiday season.

If you do not have a scope you could put your voltmeter on AC volts and it will measure the AC component of the voltage. With the blower on low I would expect that you would see between 4 and 8 volts ac with the defective motor. Just millivolts with the good motor. The highest ac voltage would be achieved on low because of the highest resistance of the speed resistor block. When the brushes are making contact you would see the voltage drop of the resistor and when the brushes are not making contact you would see full battery voltage. This test could be done right across the motor leads with no special test equipment necessary. Another great video on the SMA channel. Thanks Eric O for the follow up.

We all must channel our inner Ivan from time to time. I'm going to tear down a thermal switch for my oil & coal boilers that failed the other day, after I let the power cord hang down and rest on the section of the boiler that was 550°F. After I had walked away, BZZZZT!! I want to see what the contacts look like inside - there was infinite resistance across the switch no matter the position. Must've cooked 'em! Thing was 22 years old at a minimum anyway - I suspect even older than that. Nothing like troubleshooting 120v electrical problems at midnight on a Saturday night! The things a man will do to stay warm ... 😁 Must be that time of year. Just did a motor and switch in a '03 Taurus. My temporary fix of loading the motor up with silicone spray was extremely temporary, lol. At least it made the annoying squeal go away. The switch was your typical plastic piece of garbage with the thinnest copper contacts inside. Guess I can't criticize too much - it made it 15 years.

I came out of the house the other morning, and there must have been 100 turkeys walking in the field across the street! I thought of you immediately!! I bet Eric would love a chance at those beauties, for Christmas dinner!! Of course, I was driving in the dark, the other night, an there was just about as many deer walkin around!! There were so many, and they were so close, I could have got out and slapped one (just before they all stomped a mud hole thru me)! I thought of you then, too! It wasn't nothing like you showed out in the field. My car was running, my headlights were on, I was blowing the horn, to let them know not to jump out in front of me, my cologne was heavy in the air, I was wearing blingy clothes, my key chain made a jingly sound when I walked, and there wasn't any camouflage in sight! I could have walked home on the deer backs, and not got grass on my shoes, there were so many!! I HAD NO RIFLE!!!!!! Ain't that the way it always is??

Before all this new tech came along, Us old techs would have to see intermittent operation, confirm power and ground while it happened, and then tear into the motor , check commutator plate continuity and perhaps slap the armature on a growler. I suspect many folks here have no clue what a growler is. As also an electrical engineer, I really appreciate the new tech tools. :)

There is several places around here where a person can get those parts. I have done some however sometimes it is better for your blood pressure to just buy a replacement one lol

could you have done this with a multimeter instead and just watch for a reading that jumps around instead of being steady?

i have a 2004 matrix that had the same issue a blower motor and a/c compressor are all i have done to this car (brakes and general maintenance of course) they don't make cars like this anymore. It may be with me for a long long long long long time! scotty kilmer would be proud, he is right on this one lol

ZombieTherapy 17 i love that gen Vibe and Corolla. They share the same 1ZZ-FE 1.8 engine. Although i wish my Corolla S was actually the XRS 😞 that 2ZZ engine is killer! Made by Yamaha for Toyota. My Corolla is at least 5 speed manual. Ive done basic maintenance but i did have a Starter fail and threw in a rebuilt for $45 bucks!

Eric O, that commontator on the end of the amateur was quite worn as well wasn't it?? meaning that would have needed to be replaced as well as the brushes if available. your explaination of the amperage draw was spot on and having a visual reference aids in understanding electric motors. i have had experience in vacuum motor repairs very similar to that blower motor. Have an awesome Christmas with family and friend's.

Without all the fancy equipment, generally speaking,if banging on it makes it work it means it has bad brushes, not a bad armature,as your tear down indicates. So IMHO the old way is just as good, until they start using brushless motors
