A lumbar puncture is a diagnostic test for multiple sclerosis that involves removing and analysing a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord within the skull and backbone.
In this video Professor Coles talks us through how and why a lumbar puncture is performed when you are trying to diagnose MS.

This video is very helpful. Lots of knowledge on what to expect and treatment plans available. Knowing this, I can go to my doctor and engage in useful conversation about getting help/treatment plans/or tests instead of relying on the physician telling me to "just come back in 6 months to a year ".

I'm a part of that 1% who had a terrible (perhaps the worst) experience of my life when the doctor did the Lumbar puncture during my diagnosis.

Had one a year ago, first two failtries. These were painful as hell. Third try worked and i felt nearly no pain.

I was recently diagnosed with MS after clear MRI scans but i have symptoms and positive CSF results of Kappa Free Light Chain, CSF 2.17 mg/dL (High) CSF Bands 8 bands CSF Olig Bands 6 bands Serum Bands 2 bands

I HAD SYMPTOMS OF THE MS IN MY BODY, ATAXEA TROUBLE WALKING BALANCE ISSUES. MY FRIENDS CUSTUTOMERS TOLD HIM I SHOULD GO GET TESTED.

Is lumbar puncture safe for diagnosing IIH? I have a partially empty sella turcica and have been having extreme pressure in my head. I'm concerned about getting a lumbar puncture if I actually do have IIH, but that's really the only way to know.

Thanks for your question. As an MS charity unfortunately we don't have much knowledge on how to diagnose Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. Generally a lumbar puncture is thought to be a safe procedure for people with MS. On IIH UK, the UK charity for the condition, they do mention a Lumbar Puncture is usually a key part of the diagnosis process. I found information on this here: pulse.ly/3oemw294sm. I am just here to vent about an LP. Yes and LP alone was ruff the healing process after was Hell… the worst headache I have ever had in my life…. If you get one just don’t move for 2 weeks after or else.

So I can't have an MRI because when I was 16, I was shot in the eye with a BB gun, and they left the zinc plated BB in my head. Will a lumbar puncture ALONE be enough to confirm MS?

It is possible to diagnose MS without using MRI, though it may take longer. What the neurologist is looking for is evidence of damage happening in more than one place in your brain or spine, and also evidence of this happening on more than one occasion. There are some situations where a relapse that affects different parts of your body and a lumbar puncture will give the neurologist what they need. Though you may need to wait for another relapse before they can say for certain that you have MS. The guidelines they use for making a diagnosis are called the McDonald Criteria. i had a leak with mine but they didnt tell me it was a bad thing but i wasnt allowed to do anything but lie down. i had a bad experience as the newbies in emergency had trouble and had to do it more than once . my brother in laws brother who was a doctor said that in emergency they have doctors learning to be a doctor and he said i shouldnt have had it . twas a horrible experience as they commented on my body and blamed that for them not to do it right. i felt like an experiment

Is there pain? Are you usually awake or given local anesthesia?

You are usually awake when a lumbar puncture is conducted. Some local anaesthetic will be put into your skin through a small needle. This stings but only for a moment. They will probably put more in a bit deeper to numb the underlying tissues, which you may or may not feel. I’m afraid we don’t have any information on this. When a lumbar puncture is used in MS diagnosis it is typically to examine the cerebrospinal fluid and detect if there are signs of inflammation in the central nervous system. The pressure is not particularly something that comes into consideration, though I’m sure if there was an abnormality you would be informed. I think they can. I have PTSD and Im not sure I can remain calm if I have to have one. Did you have it done by now?

@KatiTheButcher I wanted to be KO. They cant KO us because off the position we have to be in during the procedure. You will be too relaxed and could mess up the process and take long Like I mentioned above... they added local anaesthetic once again. At the start then when I tapped out. It's annoying they didn't do it whilst KO.

@KatiTheButcher no...I haven't...but I know it's in my near future...I can't handle it awake...period...this dr is "shouldn't " be this or "shouldn't " be that....but he knows...
