The first day of planting is always trial and error. We get the planter ready and start the first field. 7 of the 12 rows are planting according to the monitor! A quick fix gets us up and running once we discover the issue. We use the 4640 on the planter because it has a better turning radius than the 8R on our narrow strips. Better maneuverability means you can position the planter faster for the next pass. No flat square fields in this part of the country!

Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

My advice to farmers and everybody is: call it soil, not dirt. It is something like the soul of our lives, it is the mother that feeds us all. Its not dirt. Have respect to our mother. My gandparents were farmers, they had one horse, some chicken and hard times. One of my grandfathers family served for the Union from 1861 to 1864 in the California 1st Infantry Regiment and finishded his service as Sergt.-Major. Mostly serving in New Mexico. Great channel, love the true american people, defend your constitution, the best ever. Greetings from a german living in Spain. Still love the smell of humid soil and love to touch it.

My dad said never stop until the neighbors have stopped for the night. Local elevators did not like my dad we always took in the last truckload at night and the first one in the morning. My wife was the truck driver when we first got married I could not get her on a tractor or combine. She was a ranchers daughter so she already knew about hard work. Always thank God for all things.

Growing up, I seemed to be an "early-bird" and a "night owl". I would start out around 0500 and work after midnight most nights during tillage/planting season. My only break was on Sundays. I would "sleep in" until 0900 and then go to church. Farmers need all the prayers we can get!

Just some friendly advice my dad told me we starting planting don’t fill you boxes more than half way until you work all the bugs out of the planter. Those boxes are heavy when they are full

@@randykroells8049 Yep I used to set the planter down on the driveway and ease forward about 10 feet, then go look at what it was dropping... you can see every seed because the openers can't penetrate the hard ground (much) and the press wheels can't close-- just bracket the seed make them easy to find! OL J R :)

When I started my sheep farm here in Australia my father told me to dig a big whole in his back yard, place all my money in it then burn it. He said it is essentially what starting out will be like. 2 years in he is up on the farm weekly getting involved and the whole family is loving it.

I'm not a farmer myself but I work in the ag industry and have many relatives that farm. My advice would be to have a great relationship with your banker! But above all, enjoy what you do and give your all to your trade. There's only so much land God gave us and it's the farmers that tend to it and take care of it. Thanks for what you do!

BLUE IS MY FAVORITE COLOR! I love your channel! To a newbie do what you have to do to get it done! It isn't always easy starting out or starting over again with a family farm when there is a sell out or change of hands or a family buy out which generally is about a 3-5 year rebuild process/ program! Don't give up!

I'm not qualified to give advice, but I'm impressed by how all the Farmtubers I watch on here take the breakdowns and setbacks in stride. I admire the way you all stay (relatively) sane during the stress of planting or harvesting. It's inspiring.

Those old planters can be fickle starting out every year. Also, we never filled our seed boxes up until we got the bugs worked out of our old planters.

Being a first year farmer myself, my advice would be that you've got to have patience and a can do attitude. You can't let things such as breakdowns, crappy weather, and other unfortunate events get you down. You've got to be patient and not force things all while maintaining a positive attitude. With markets the way they currently are its really hard to have a positive attitude but everything will work out in the end!

I’m just starting my farm. Me and my wife are looking for 10+ acres of land to have some chickens pigs cattle maybe some sheep(she wants the sheep). We’re looking in North Carolina just North of Charlotte. And trying to get as much knowledge about farming before for we actually get what we want. Great video, my biggest advice to farming is it takes years of trial and error plus listen to older people that give advice , u have to listen and not say anything cause ur just a beginner. All you can do is do ur best starting out and don’t do more than you can , honestly I learned a lot .

Not a farmer myself but did work with my cousin who is a dairy farmer. My advice to new farmers. Coffee. Make sure it's strong and hot. Also make a wrestling ring in the hay mow if you have one. Great way to have fun after chores but watch out for those power bombs. They hurt.

I want to begin farming, I've been given a lot of advice in the past. Reading through some of the comments have helped give me more. Best piece of advice I've been given is be prepared for anything and everything, it will find you one way or another. I hope I can follow my dream and start my own operation some day.

Another fantastic video Ryan, looks like planter setup can be challenging at times but once everything is correct and good to go it's time to rock and roll, My advice to any and all farmers is: don't rush things cause that will lead to frustrations and my 2nd advice is stay healthy and safe, thanks for taking the time to film, edit and upload so the rest of us here on KZfaq can enjoy and learn something in the process!!!

My best advice would be to work for somebody else before you start on your own. Farming is one of the hardest things out there and it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you get into it. As well you can learn an astonishing amount working for somebody who’s been in it a long time and that knowledge is worth its weight in gold.

I'm currently a first-generation farmer four years in to this adventure. Best advice I can give is do enough math to make sure you find out where you're not spending your money wisely and where you can make more money. But more importantly be more stubborn than the weather and the dealers and the salesman and the bankers as if any of that was possible LOL

Fortunately I grew up into farming but you can always learn things from other farmers about growing crops and soil management as well as valuable information on raising animals. I grew up raising cattle and pigs then tried sheep. They’re all different. What you learn you share too.

Find people who can help you throughout life and make solid connections with them. A lasting relationship with a mentor is priceless in this day and age because it helps you learn things without the pain of making all the errors yourself. (By the way, which one of you is supposedly "Sunshine", and which one wants to be "Whiskey"? Just reading the board over your shoulder.)

My advice would be to make sure you put safety at the top of your list. Yes I know farmers have to do some shady things to get stuff done but I lost my brother to a farming accident and I don't wish that upon anyone else. So stay safe while getting it done.

As someone whose only farming experience is playing SimFarm (the original) my advice to aspiring farmers is to start young and pursue all aspects of it with passion. Don’t wait till you’re 50 then decide you should have been a farmer!

There may always be times in drought, low markets, etc. where you doubt what you are doing and if you should change or just hang up. My biggest advice is just persevere through your issues you may have and just take the good with the bad and roll with the punches.

I’m not a farmer, but what I’ve picked up from being around farmers is that old equipment can be just as good as new equipment. You might not get done quite as fast, but you won’t be paying off that equipment forever.

I would say gain knowledge in maintenance of buildings, machinery. It can help save money down the the road and maybe prevent bigger expenses.

Advice to someone starting farming is DON'T QUIT. Hard work and long hours will lead to more success than whining and moaning. There's going to be sunny days and there's going to be crappy days. Get a full days work done on each of these days and at the end of the year, you'll be alright. My second piece of advice is to ASK FOR ADVICE. No one expects you to know everything and no one is going to come over and tell you what you are doing wrong or how to do things. But if you ask other folks, they are by and large happy to help a young farmer out. My thirds piece of advice is BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR. Be there to lend a hand when you are needed and there will be hand lent to you when you need it. It's one of the best things about being a farmer.

I’m not a farmer, just an urban, backyard gardener. I would tell others who want to grow food in their backyards to learn from farmers first. They know how to grow more food, and better food, than we can. You may not be able to do the exact same things, but you can adapt what they do you your space and equipment.

My advice is to evolve with the times and invest in technology, try not to get stuck back 10 years or more in equipment if you can or in just planning and techniques like crop rotation, managing grazing and cattle practices, field and yield monitors, etc.. Love your videos, keep up the great work you and your family do.

Start small and get bigger as Time goes on do t start with the nicest equipment you can buy just work with what you have for now seeing all off the bigger farms like ours with nice new equipment may be discouraging but you will get there on day and you will be proud that you are there and our still farming

Parts can be expensive. Finding cheap reliable replacement parts is a must. Shoup Manufacturing offers replacement planting parts at a fraction of what the dealers offer.

My advice is " Do not be afraid to ask for help." With that being said be willing to help when asked. Your biggest asset is the farmer next door. Who is also your biggest competitor.

When I worked on the farm planting was a huge thing because my old boss was a pioneer seed dealer so we were always selling and planting corn bout every second of every day. My advice for new farmers is don’t forget your talc and always retrace your steps when diagnosing issues with anything.

We zip tie an old pant leg on the tender spout, you can move from planter box to planter box without shutting off the flow and without dropping seed.

When starting out remember that you don’t need new shiny paint, but keep what you have shiny and clean. It makes you feel good. Question; Where is the air compressor for your air bags on the planter?
