I too, am a member of the Tweed Brotherhood. I don't have a 5E3, but I have the 5E9. That's the Tremolux. It does exactly the same things that yours is doing, with the addition of the early style tremolo. There's no opto coupler, it changes the bias of the inverter, and it's vastly different from the later trems. It's more like riding the volume knob rather than the "on-off" kind of sound you get with black and silver face models. Leo Fender should have gotten the Nobel Prize for amp design. Every one of those things, from the Champ, up to the Bassman or the twin, are spectacular. The only Tweeds that I don't instantly love are the ones that need work, and when that's done, they join the family as members in good standing. They are among some of the finest products that this country has ever produced. I can't imagine how anybody could be a guitar player and not want one. Thanks for posting, I've known about all of the Tweed voodoo for many moons, but it was fun watching you go through the moves with yours. Your enthusiasm made this fun to watch, and besides, you're a hell of a player. You got lotsa heart brother!

Jay, this video is fantastic and covers everything you need to know about the 5E3. I had a Fender CS Tweed Deluxe head years ago, loved it, but sold it like an idiot. I picked up a brand new combo last month and just put an Alnico Blue in it. I have literally owned over 100 amps in my time. Everyone should try this amp at least once in their career to feel the truth of tube powered tone. This is the benchmark amp for me! Thanks again for the video, great job.

Stellar review as usual, @JayLeonardJ. Love your enthusiasm and killer chops! This video is so important for people interested in the Tweed Deluxe. There is a much older YT video out there where @RecProAudio just shows the knobs/panel and talks about the interactivity of the knobs and the ability to get a much broader range of clean tones. Had I not seen that, I would have stupidly sold my Tweed Deluxe due to falsely believing that it can't do any good cleans. But thanks to that video (and this one!), since then it has been total bliss and lifelong learning with with this amp. Thanks for the game changing tips!

Nicely done! I've owned & gigged with an original '58 5E3 since 1979. Lemme clarify - the normal channel was originally intended for hiZ microphones and used a 12AY7 instead of a 12AX7 for the input stage. To my ear the AY7 offers a bit more "breath" in the 5E3's tone

Love the circuit interactions of the '50s Tweed amplifiers, ditto for the '50s Gibson Les Paul wiring, so many small nuances' it takes a bit of time to learn what the amp/guitar combo are capable of. Great demo, lots of great information and you kept it interesting. Also, thank you for your minimalistic signal chain (Guitar, Instrument Cable, Amplifier), very much appreciated that you kept is simple and concise.

Some great detail in using an old school amp there buddy, some fab playing too.. Very few show how to really use such an amp to its best effect & ability between guitar & amp and you've nailed it! I have a LazyJ20 and love how the amp is an instrument in itself, This method also works wonderfully with a Fender Blues Junior too to get those output valves cookin with glorious tone at your fingertips. These type of amps also take pedals in the front end perfectly too. Once you've mastered its amazing capabilities, It really is THE REAL DEAL TONE MONSTER !

Great video! This is legit the best amp review and demo video that I've seen so far. The "how too" and instructional aspects of how to get certain tones is so helpful. a observation and suggestion - if you branded your channel explicitly as an "amp channel" and started doing regular amp reviews (classic amps and new ones), you'd be hitting a key nitch that people are hungry for. I think you'd quickly grow this into one of the biggest music channels. just thought. Anyhow, great work man.

Awesome demo Jay, I really enjoyed all the settings! You did a great job of explaining the different combinations and interactions that are possible as well as demoing the quirkiness of certain settings. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to play through a 5E3 circuit yet so I can't speak from personal experience. I can imagine that it would be frustrating for someone if they didn't know about these tricks and weren't much into tinkering with different settings. Regardless, I don't think it would bother me because I love tweaking sounds and getting nitty gritty with my gear. I once owned a Pignose G60VR all tube amp. My friend helped me mod it a bit and it sounded really great. However, there was one really weird thing about the way the treble knob worked. The most trebly setting possible was actually achieved by turning the treble knob all the way down! Then if you started turning it up, it would get super dark and gradually brighter and brighter up till the highest setting. However, even that wasn't as trebly as it on zero. I love a bright sound so I usually just left it on zero but people would always be confused by that if they came over to jam or played through that amp.

Fantastic video! I've been playing a 5E3 (Clark Beaufort) since 2006 and I knew the controls were interactive, but I never really messed around with them much. Great job, you covered it all except the "Throwing it off a cliff" test. You hammered that amp good and proper and it did'nt flinch once! I played a similar heavy handed style once through an expensive super modern "Built like a tank" combo at a recording session and the thing began to melt and fill the air with smoke, the funny thing is the owner was'nt upset at all as she opened a cabinet and pulled out an old "Champ" which had been retired cos it was too basic and old fashioned according to the company that sold her the combo with bells and whistles, stereo chorus, complex eq, in/out , 2x10 speakers but it did'nt like dynamics( more like a hifi) so if you played the same way all the time softly it was happy and sounded good but as soon as you changed the attack it would groan and make some really weird sci-fi sounds like it was possesed and eventually it just became a carcass for spare bits. The Champ just keeps getting better the more you use it. Thanks again for the viddy

Thanks for your excellent demonstration of this versatile amp 👍🙂👌 Now I just need to decide whether to build this or the 5E9 Tremolux 🤔😋 Subscribed!

Brilliant demo and really well explained - especially how the different elements of what's a pretty 'basic' amp circuit interact so beautifully - really interesting stuff! Is there any chance you could do the same in-depth demo for the new UAFX Woodrow? I'm seriously tempted to buy that pedal on the back of this clip 😃👍

To answer your question as a tube amp designer, I love a deluxe and all of the interactive controls. you can better dial in a tone then, use your guitar controls and an overdrive to get everywhere you want to be.
