Make sure you check out the bonus debrief at the end of the video discussing the logistics of cross border operations between the US and Canada!
In August, my daughter and I decided to fly up to Victoria BC for a day flight. She is interested in the University of Victoria and wanted to check out the campus. We also had some family visiting later in the month and they were hoping to visit Victoria, so we thought a practice run would make sense.
Victoria BC is a gorgeous city only 30-40 minute by plane from Seattle. It has a very European vibe with a beautiful downtown area.
Flying from the US to Canada in a private plane is very practical but requires a lot more up-front planning than a typical cross-country. There are some excellent resources available on-line detailing what is required but I thought folks would find it interesting to see how the process actually works.
It is important to fly into an Airport of Entry (AoE) to clear customs both when flying into Canada and when flying back to the US. Victoria BC is an AoE so that’s easy but my home airport of Renton is not an AoE. So I need to pick another US AoE when returning to the US. There are several AoE’s in Washington state. I picked Bellingham (KBLI) since I am familiar with it and it is only a short flight from Victoria BC.
If you are interested, make sure to watch my briefing on cross border operations at the end of the video. Note this is meant to provide a feel for a real-world, cross-border flight, NOT to replace training available on-line. Here are a couple of excellent resources I have used:

Really enjoy your videos, Trevor. I recently moved to Anacortes from Santa Cruz CA.., bought a Cirrus in Nov 23…, eager to explore all the PNW has to offer, including a trip up to AK. Your videos are enjoyable and informative. Thank you!

Any time you go to Victoria airport, if you can, park at the Victoria Flying Club. They don't charge for the day whereas the SHELL FBO does.

This routing is on my todo list. I managed RNT-YDT just before covid closed the border and that's been my only GA cross border so far. Thanks for the dry run.

Great video! I'm not far, in KVUO, and flew to Boundary Bay a few months ago. Much better than dealing with big international airports :) Also went to Bellingham on the way back!

Thanks Richard. I have a friend in TX with a DA40 who flew all the way to Alaska this year. On this flight to Vancouver, I had a 4 person aviation raft in the back.

That’s interesting you cleared customs at BLI. Isn’t BFI an airport of entry too?
@twmba65
@twmba65 Ай бұрын
Yes either BLI or BFI would have worked as an AoE. In either case, I need to to make another hop back to my home base of RNT.

Enjoy your videos. And your thoughtful inclusions. Do you find your DA 42 to be generally comfortable on multi hour cross country flights? I know you have had some full days in the cockpit. Also did you have any trouble finding a hangar that would work?
@twmba65
@twmba65 11 ай бұрын
Thanks Curt! Yes very comfortable for cross countries. I usually limit my legs to 4hrs max ... I'm definitely ready to stretch after that but the seats/sitting position is good. Its still a 4 seat cabin Its like spending that time in a medium sized car. Also the engines are relatively quiet compared to many others ... I find that lower background noise reduces fatigue on long cross country flights. Hangars are definitely a consideration for the DA42 and even more so for the DA62. I got lucky in that just as I was buying mine, a friend was "moving up" and needed a bigger hangar. I only have a bit over 6 inches on either wing tip so it takes some care but I got comfortable with it pretty quickly.

How comfortable is the da42 vs cirrus or a Cessna?
@twmba65
@twmba65 9 ай бұрын
Its a tough question to answer. I find a Cirrus SR22/20 and a Diamond DA42 pretty similar in terms of comfort. Both are similar to sitting in a modern sedan. But you will definitely find opinions on line that someone loves one and can't stand the other. You need to try them out for yourself. Cessnas (I assume you are talking about 172s/182s) are a different animal. Much older design and most are a lot older than Diamonds and Cirrus. Not the same comfort level as a more modern design but I've spent hundreds of hours in them (Particularly 172) and I think they are fine even for long cross countries.

Thanks Trevor,@@twmba65 first I want to say thank you for your videos. I am working on my IR and your videos are perfect to help me learn as I go. Currently, I fly a Turbo 206 Cessna and it really is an amazing plane and very comfortable seats. I spent about 70hrs in the Cirrus planes before buying the Cessna and on long trips the seats felt a little stiff. Ended up buying the Cessna though as it was a better fit. These days however I find I need to fly at night alot and my 206 really isn't the answer for that but I don't want to spend the $ to get into a turbine. Also I am a G1000nxi person and find it hard to go backwards and buy an older plane that doesn't have it but would be a good solution for flying at night. Most likely I think I will just wait and build cash and in the meantime try and test out a DA62 and see if it as comfortable as the 206 and then buy one of those when the time is right. Thank you for all your hard work recording and putting up the videos.

@@hlwade Thanks for the kind comments on the videos and good luck with the IR. Lots of work as you know but it opens up incredible flying options once you have it! I've sat in a 206 but I don't believe I've ever flown in one. It sounds like you have a modern version with the G1000NXi. I'm sure it must be an amazing bird ... especially the turbo. The DA62 definitely feels more roomy than a DA42 or SR22 since the cabin is a few inches wider. I'm with you on the trade-offs of owning an older turbine. They can be very capable planes but I don't like the idea of going backwards on the avionics and you hear some horror stories regarding the cost of keeping them flying. I don't fly too much at night but I am often over mountains while flying in the PNW. I've had two older single engine planes in the past. I loved both of them but I am definitely happier having an extra engine now!
