Some details of this performance: This perfomance was from the ShowMaskGoon: a TV show on Russian NTV channel where the best/winners of 3 earlier music shows (The Mask, You are Super, Superstar), 9 singers perform 9 songs of 9 categories over the 9 shows/Editions, and vote/judge each other at every Edition's end. So 8 of them (+ the guest) are watching while one of them perfoms on the stage (which not only got interactive background, dancers, etc. etc. but also 2 performance in every show is supported with VR technology, giving full virtual surrounding to the performer), singing live. So Diana was sitting with them when others performed. This gave the young singer (18 here, soon 20) excellent opportunity to try herself in 9 styles during the 9 episodes. Even Dimash is eclipsed by her peerless combination of superb technique, huge range, and emotional depth and power. She has already accumulated more masterpieces than she has years(!), and so there are many ways to approach what is already a large body of work. One way would be to continue to explore her amazing covers, in English, of American and British classics. They include "Its a Man's World" (in the 2018 talent contest "You are Super, when she was 14) "Wicked Game" and "Human" (in the 2019 "super" contest between previous winners of "You are Super," when she was 15). "Personal Jesus" (the ninth and last episode of the 2021 show "ShowMaskGoOn," when she was 18, this performance of "Can't Help Falling in Love" having been given in the first episode). "What a Wonderful World" (video of a live 2021 studio performance, when she was 18). While these covers give some indication of her astonishing versatility, they are but a drop in the ocean. To fully appreciate what she can do one has to take in her magnificent performances, in the original language, of classic songs the original languages of which are, respectively Russian, French, Spanish (and in one instance Arabic). At the end of all that one could then turn to the marvellous songs that, in the last couple of years, she has composed and written herself!🙂

Bruce, please excuse the length of this post, but there is a lot of information to give. This performance took place on September 25, 2021, when Diana Ankudinova was 18 years old during the inaugural season of a new Russian vocal competition called the “ShowMaskGoOn”. Diana was only 14 years old when auditioned for, and won the 2018 season and there was already talk about Diana becoming a “true contralto voice type. When she was 15 and won the 2019 season of “You Are Super” the talk was not about if, but when she would become a true contralto. The 2019 season of “You Are Super” was called the “Super-Season” because it consisted of winners and finalists from previous 2 seasons. Diana was invited to participate in the “ShowMaskGoOn” inaugural season because of her 2 previous wins. For the new “ShowMaskGoOn” competition Diana was the first to perform and opened with her cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Can't Help Falling In Love”. She showed what many vocal professionals were saying, based on Diana’s previous vocal competition’s, she has developed into what many believe she is, a true contralto voice, and for those that may not know what a contralto voice type is, a contralto is the lowest, and deepest type of female voice, and a true contralto is very, very rare. Diana has said during past interviews she was unhappy with her lack of a higher vocal range, and that lack kept her out of the more prestigious Russian music academies. Diana, along with her voice teacher decided to concentrate extensively on improving and developing her higher vocal range. A female singers vocal range helps in determining and defining her voice type. Diana’s vocal range was first measured in 2017, when she was 13 years old. At that time Diana’s vocal range was measured from a low of D3 (a solid lower alto range) to a high of A5 (a solid upper alto range), which is good and unusually low for a 13 year old girl. In September of 2021, during this “Can’t Help Falling In Love” performance, her vocal range was again measured. Diana’s functional vocal range now measures from a low of C3 (male Tenor range) to a high of B♭5, (female Mezzo Soprano range). During the opening of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” Diana’s low Contralto voice is on full display. The improvement to her upper range is also on display during the middle portion of this performance. Finally, the depth and power of Diana’s voice during the final section define her as not just a Contralto, but as a Dramatic Contralto voice type, and a Dramatic Contralto has the lowest, deepest, darkest, and richest sound and is the most powerful of the contralto voice types. Also, a Dramatic Contralto is the rarest of the rare Contralto voice types. At the end of this performance, the power of her Dramatic Contralto voice is on full display for everyone to hear, but it’s not just how low she can go. It’s in the exceptional quality of her tone in her upper range but especially in her lower range that makes her so very special. It's in the roundness, fullness, and depth of her sound, along with her ability to create, access, and use an enormous amount of resonance. Diana has also a mastered a vocal technique known as polyphonic singing, which is extraordinary! Her having mastered the polyphonic singing technique gives Diana the ability to create up to two different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and can sound an octave, or an octave and a half above. It’s this polyphonic singing ability that can make it sound like more than one person singing which is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of artificial voice manipulation like Auto Tune, or she is using pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing off stage in the background. Some others have accused Diana of lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. There is NO artificial manipulation of Diana's voice at all, and no one else is singing off stage, nor is she lip-syncing to a vocal track. What you are hearing is the backing musical score track along with other voices on a backing tracks that are used to fill in and round out the performance. Diana Ankudinova, and only Diana Ankudinova is actually singing Can't Help Falling In Love. One of the most asked questions about Diana’s unique voice is, how does she do it? How does such a young female singer achieve such a low, rich, deep, profound, and resonant sound? Without the ability to actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing those low notes to actually see what is happening within her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is simply attributing Diana's ability to her just winning the genetic lottery. Diana and the other singer's also doubled as judges for this competition which was televised over nine weeks, one singer per week for the entirety of the 9 weeks. Diana and the other professional singers/judges were competing against each other, and based on their individual performances they awarded judging points to each other. Each week a different singer took center stage and performed a different song over each of the nine weeks and was required to sing using a different genre of music, and a different style. The ShowMaskGoOn! concluded on November 20, 2021. During “Can’t Help Falling In Love” Diana’s first performance, the judge on the top row who was the first to stand is a well known Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan. He was invited to participate as a special guest judge for this inaugural competition. At the end of Diana's performance she receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. One of those competitors is also a well-known contemporary Russian singer, Julia Parshuta. Julia is in the center row dressed in in red, and looks totally lost at the end of Diana's performance. She puts both hands on top of her head, and looks totally shocked and bewildered. Finally, The Show Must Go On competition concluded with Diana Ankudinova being awarded the most judging points over the total of 9 weeks, and was declared the competition winner!

Yes, her range is crazy for a contralto but it's the tonal quality for me. Unbelievably dark. I read somewhere that they analyzed the sound on that crushing finale and picked up as many as 6 overtones. She just has an astounding amount of resonance. One vocal coach said: "It's like she's got a built-in sub-woofer."
