The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This song hit Number 1 on December 27, 1969 making it literally the last Number 1 pop hit of the 60s. Beautiful way to end that decade from a musical point of view.

I think of that often.... I would like to think it was destiny that made it #1, but I'm pretty sure Berry Gordy bought this last #1 hit of the 1960s.

You are absolutely correct about the impact of the Ed Sullivan Show. One of the Supremes earlier hits had been to No. 1 in the charts and had dropped a place or two but after an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show went back to No. 1. The increased sales were at the time attributed to their appearance on the show. Sorry I can’t remember the song.

Beautiful Diana just sails smoothly through this song with no effort at all. So sad there will never be a reunion now.

Agreed I hate when people call it soft cause it’s actually very hard to describe but I know it doesn’t sound soft.

I'm 71 now . The music in the early sixties was so remarkable I was a solid listener from 10 years old when Motown , girl groups , Frankie Valie ...the rock bands to follow . A great time to be young 😎

It’s true we all gathered around the TV to watch The Beatles on Ed Sullivan but we sure as hell did it for these ladies too. They were a Supergroup before there was a name for that. ❤️

My Mom's favorite song. She loved the Supremes, we all did and I'm Italian too. Sure miss the 1960's, I was in grammar school but my dad was in the entertainment business (sort of). lol

In 1969 I was 6 years old and remember my mama playing this on a 45 and singing it. In 2024 I am 61 and I am the one playing it, still, after all these years.❤❤

Lewis, Lewis, Lewis.... was it just this song and the medley this Sunday night, 4 days before Christmas 1969 ? I know Diana Ross spoke with Ed, but was there anything else that night about their LAST TV appearance together? OMGeez from 1964-1969 HOW MANY TV appearances did they make???? Did they do any other skits or discussions that night in regular clothes?
