How to Start Strengthening Your Belly Breathing | DNS 3 Months Supine Loaded Breathing Training
Laying on your back with the hips-knees-ankles and 90 degrees (like a 3-month-old baby) is one of the best ground-based core exercises. And is a great way to teach someone the Core ABCs -- Alignment, Breathing, Control.
We love and use it all the time in the clinic!
This video goes through how we use the 3-month baby move to initially introduce the Core ABCs concept so that it can be used in more adult-like movements like squatting, hinging, and lunging.
Try this out and comment with how you did. Did you struggle to find abs vs. diaphragm? Had trouble maintaining pressure on exhale? Can't get the belly breath? It all can be much harder than it looks! But is worth the effort as it's fundamental to human movement and function!
00:00 -- Intro
00:40 -- The setup; breathing into the abdomen
01:30 -- Feeling for breath (expansion) in your back
01:44 -- Abs versus diaphragm (buddha belly)
02:10 -- Maintaining pressure on the exhale
02:56 -- Loading the breath with legs up**
**Once you've got all the steps above figured out, focus on practicing your breathing with the legs ups. At a minimum, perform three sets per day. One set is when you hit "form failure".
"Form failure" is when you break perfect form:
- arching the back
- shallow breathing
- chest breathing
- abs shaking excessively trying to hold on for dear life
For the numbers people: 3 sets of 10 breaths per day (at a minimum). However, you still have to be aware of your form!
When breathing with both legs up becomes too easy tryout these upgrades: • Cut the Crunches! 7 Ab...
At REACH, we train individuals through the ‘Core ABCs’
🔴A is for #Alignment - keeping a nice neutral spine position
⚪️B if for #Breathing - diaphragmatic breathing to increase intra-abdominal pressure
🔵C if for #Control - controlling movement with good alignment and breathing

This is a great instructional video. I've been to several PTs and countless breath work classes that haven't helped me get the feel of belly breathing. The Buddha belly versus using abs is so helpful. Thanks!

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback -- so glad this was helpful for you! So often people struggle with squeezing the abs when they think they are getting a full diaphragmatic breath. We've found the abs vs buddha distinction really helps people understand the difference between engaging the diaphragm in the breath as opposed to clenching the transverse abdominis.

Hey guys. You make really nice, instructive videos. Do you think it would be possible to make a 10-15 minute follow-along mobility routine incorporating your best principles? That would be a legend. Thanks.

Hi, can I check with you , when I am in my maximal inhalation, my stomach contracts but not expands. Why is it?
@Reachrehabchiro

You're squeezing your abs when trying to maximally contract your diaphragm. It's common when first practicing this. Follow the video and keep practicing -- especially the abs vs diaphragm part.

What if my back muscles tighten up and over engage to compensate for my weak ab muscles? Is that normal or it is just supposed to be abs and not back muscles working in this position? Nice video. Thanks

No, it means exactly what you said about back muscles compensating for abs. As the video states, you want to flatten your low back to the ground. This positioning forces you to use more abs and entire core opposed to overusing back muscles. Feeling the back muscles doing the work means your not in ideal position. Reset and try again. I would recommend rewatching the video and keep attempting it yourself. Every little step in this video is important. Thanks for the feedback.

What are some progressions for when the 2 legged version becomes easy? Right now I can easily do it with one leg but two is still hard to hold.

Lex, I just added a link in the description to a video we did with some progressions and variations. Keep up the great work, working on that core stability! And thanks for the comment!
