Blank canvasses and paint and brushes are also very cheap these day, yet you do not hear me complain about the 'bad' paintings people make nowadays as I do not go looking for them. If we really make 'bad' music lately listeners can always choose to neglect our work instead of complaining. Thank you for your wise words Synth Daddy. By the way, you just had to make me look at the Summit for 27 minutes didn't you? ;-)

Thx for voicing your opinions. I constantly suffer imposter syndrome and fear of criticism often stifles my creativity. I used to be creative for a living, but now I’m free to create as I see fit. My art is no longer tied to money, deadlines and the opinions of others. Now my struggle is to break bad habits, and just let go. ❤

Well said. Tribal thinking in the music world is stupid and counterproductive. We all make music, and there's no end to the kinds of music you can make, or what people like. "What tribe are you in?" "I'm in the tribe that likes making music. Full stop."

LOL many of my old fav synth sounds are done on analog modular synths like the wonderful vintage Moog. But then it clicked: To get the same sound back, one could not just "load" the sound, one had to reconnect all the cables and set the knobs to the previous position. What a herculean job this is. I am using a Modular VST synth, that one actually can save and reload the exact sound in a snap. So you had to work for hours and hours on those, naturally one would know his baby and the sounds by heart and could differ it from a VST. Those old machines detuned even during sessions. The older the heavier they are the cabling alone is insane in those things. My heaviest part is the input, the Keyboard. My "synths" are all on a laptop and i can close the lid and cary that for hours. The conclusion is: I am lazy! 🤣

Gen Xer here too. Well said! Do YOUR thing. If others like it and enjoy it, good - if not, it's OK. We're different. It'd be super boring if we all liked and used the same things, that only happens in totalitarianism. Don't obsess over 'which is better' or 'what's the best X'. There are no such things. Use what you have, and use it well for YOUR needs. Screaming at clouds is OK, by the way. The real issue is when they scream back at ya! ;) Have a lovely weekend, synthheads!

I keep hearing people complaining about creative block. In my opinion getting rid of all these dogmas you mentioned (Analog vs Digital, Dawless vs Daw etc…) is among the best remedies for that condition. Sometimes unbelievable how humans can stand in their own way.

Is calling their question stupid being intollerent? Perhaps, but I understand where you are coming from. Your comments reflect a perspective only gained with maturity and experience. As you have already concluded, every hobby experiences division based on general human behavior such as tribalism. I would just say to continue to educate and inform others with compassion. Eventually there will be fewer novice questions. :) I love all your work here.

Mick's maxim: Music is anything presented as, or perceived to be, music. Thereafter it's merely a question of taste. [For Mick's other maxim, substitute "art" for "music"] Some of the people who complain about the "declining standards" are only interested in hearing virtuosos. Which is fine - but they'd better avoid hearing me play! 😂

Sorry but I just cannot bring myself to call synthesizers "tools." Not even the simple EHX LPB-1 would I consider as a mere "tool" ... these are INSTRUMENTS! ☝😃(Thank you for allowing me to take this moment to pedant, now back to things that matter.) #tribeinstrument

Nice one. Too many people out there with extremely strong opinions on how you 'should' make music and what is 'good' vs 'bad' music. I saw a video recently from a synth youtuber who insisted that you should not use ready made patches/presets as it makes you sound 'amateur' and 'un-professional'.. had to hold back my reply to be as polite as possible in my disagreement. A potential subject for you to cover maybe.

@wavesequencer oh yeah, I actually saw that one. It’s a little tongue in cheek and he’s got it pretty well scoped to EDM only. Some comments point out that some known sounds are genre defining or so widespread they’re like piano or violin…classic sounds and he does reply that those can be exceptions…at least that was my interpretation. Remember that he’s also selling to you, “get some gear…we have affiliate links” but I think his intent it to motivate you to explore and grow. Can you take his video to be a bit grumpy? Yeah maybe, but I think his goal is to make people learn to do it themselves. It’s ok! He’s very Berlin. I like him. ;) But take him in stride and do what inspired you, presets or otherwise.

Art? I am in the happy position to make bleeps and bloops for myself. It might grow into music. But i don`t need to call it Art, nor is my target to get an audience other than myself. With that, i don´t have to care for other oppions. Don`t like it? It isn't meant for you anyways. You wanna have an audience? Than you actually need to "play" the audience. Copy successful templates from successful pieces and modify them. Copying is bad? We only have 12 Notes to begin with. Similarities are bound to happen especially if one wants to address and audience. Daft Punk where the lords of taking samples from others and made them their own. Bach was an artist. Daft Punk art artists. Lady Gaga, Bieber, Rihanna? We could discuss that they got their Music written by others. Others are Artists? Two songwriters create more then 80% of US Hits. They are Artists? Well they know techniques that will get your attention caught. Their artistry can be discussed. And please, no offense: Synths are Musical Instruments we use as toys. Like a violin can be used as a toy. Synths and Violins make horrible sound if you don't use them right.
@synthseeker
@synthseeker 8 ай бұрын
I agree with a lot of that except for needing to play to an audience…my experience is that music is made for myself (what drives musical output can vary from person to person) and followers/fans gather over time on their own. There’s nothing wrong with wanting fans but (as in your case) it’s not a motivator for everyone. And as for copying…that’s fine. Most music is derivative and I have no issues with enjoying the next “four chord song” that gets released. You don’t have to call your creative work art or music. It’s *yours*…right? ;) Thanks for sharing!
@HomerNarr
@HomerNarr 8 ай бұрын
@@synthseeker :) I didn't want to make the impression that making music for an audiences is bad or wrong. It's just an additional motivation but it might influence the outcome. But a certain KZfaqr makes depressing videos and i always think, that he does not get the audience thing right. He does make music, but he hasn't developed the skill to please the masses. There are certain techniques that can be applied to please audiences. The two supersuccessful writers have discovered templates and can copy that concept over and over. He might need to adapt his approach. It's either HIS music or successful music right now. So yes: Make it *yours*, Your baby that you love, no matter what others say. Creating successful music however is another layer of additional skill and the music might be not necessarily art.

@@synthseeker Oh, this creator is not my friend, we don't interact. Not that much that i could write to him. Talking is much better then writing anyway since writing can very easily be miss-understood. I agree, caring and listening does help when one is depressed. I got a friend who is suffering and i think our talks brighten his moods.

I don’t think these are unpopular opinions. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter which tools people choose to make music, just make music. It’s ok to talk about the tools/instruments we use/like but it’s important to not be a tribal zealot and start antagonizing people over a subject that, at the end of the day, is only a personal preference.
