This video goes over all the supplies that you can use for dice making and what their general purposes are for. To get started you can work with just a starter set of dice, some silicone and resin, but I wanted to show you all the options at your disposal!
This video has been LONG requested, and I figured with the holidays coming up, this would be a great getting started guide for some possible new dice makers. All of the products that I mentioned are linked below based on the order that they show up in the video. If you have any questions, send them my way, and happy making to all you Dice Goblins out there. :)
PRODUCT LINKS:
If I don't have the exact same product in the link, it's either no longer available, or I couldn't find it. I will link an equivalent.
All links to Amazon are Amazon Affiliate links. That means that it doesn't cost you a cent more, but I get a small % kickback if you buy from my link. Feel free to purchase elsewhere, this just really helps me out at no cost to you. :)

So one thing that I want to clarify is that the Sophie and Toffee premade molds that I show in the video are technically squish molds, AND open face molds. I didn't want to confuse newbies to the hobby by saying "This is what an open face mold looks like!... Also it's a squish mold." I plan to go over mold types, as well as give the S&T molds a proper review in the near future. :)

You are 100% right to use a respirator. It's not always easy to know if the filters you have on it are rated for fumes though. The pink one in the video is for particulates and not harmful vapors like those from resins. 3M has a wealth of information on which filters should be used with which hazards. I use the pink (2097) in my woodworking, but switch to an activated carbon filter when I do any resin work or aerosol spraying. Great videos, thanks for making them and keep it up!
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 4 жыл бұрын
The information I found online and on the filter packaging seemed to indicate that it was for harmful vapors :o I'll look into it. Do you perhaps know of 3m filters that work for vapors that I can link instead from your experience? Perhaps I am misunderstanding the fumes that it mentions that they keep out
@vandermore
@vandermore 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rybonator Did some digging for the info: Data sheet for the 2097 (particulate and nuisance vapors) multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/5188O/3m-particulate-filter-2097-p100.pdf Here's 3M's page for choosing a filter. It looks like a combination filter ( like ChoriQueso suggests ) is what you want. The black label filters: www.3m.com/3M/en_US/safety-centers-of-expertise-us/respiratory-protection/respirator-selection/ This is a good video that goes over the different types of filters: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zrh9fZeFmqioeI0.html I know from woodworking, a respirator makes a huge difference in my lungs. Using things with solvents or organic vapors is a whole other class of dangers over particulates. The occasional casting is probably fine, frequent casting of things I'd definitely use more than a particulate filter. This turned out longer than I expected. Love the videos, and you've made me interested in casting my own dice. Thanks!

One thing in regards to mold making was something you mentioned in the past, it was making molds using the pressure pot to remove air pockets to get a smooth mold rather then a vacuum chamber. The process seems pretty self explanatory but seeing someone more experienced walk through it would be awesome as possibly removing the "need" for a vacuum chamber removes a cost barrier to entry for the hobby

I would too. I almost bought some, but couldn't find a proper review. In the vids I could find, it looked like bubbles on the side the lid went on was a common issue, but because they were channels that focused on how pretty or "kawaii" their finished pieces were they hid that fact by not showing that side. Since I couldn't be sure, I decided spending that kind of money was not worth the risk.

I plan to do a review on them very soon :) Also yes they are squish, but I didn't wanna confuse new people by saying "This is what an open face mold looks like!... Also it's a squish mold." Haha. I plan to go more in depth on them during the review as well as the difference between the 3 mold types. But thanks for pointing that out :)

Excellent video! Just a word about respirators and filters: the 3M 2097 Particulate filters shown here do not offer true vapor or VOC protection, just some nuisance odor filtering. They are great for sanding dust, and are probably fine for use with low/no VOC materials, like the Art n Glow resin shown... but many epoxies and resins release some NASTY vapors while curing. For those materials, a true vapor filter (like the 3M 6001, 6006, etc) should be used, ESPECIALLY if you're casting in a not-so-well ventilated area. Happy casting!

3:04, haha, that reminds me of a funny story about such dice. A few years back, my buddy and I were at GenCon and my friend got a plastic wrapped die at the Catylst booth. Back at the hotel, he couldn’t help but wonder if it was candy, so he popped it in his mouth. It had the consistency of candy, but was so tasteless that he genuinely couldn’t tell and spat it out. He spent the next two years trying to solve that mystery and eventually got a conclusive answer that it was in fact candy.

There's the Smooth-On 14NV which doesn't require a pressure pot (and I used for a long time when I didn't have a pressure pot or vacuum chamber). I would recommend this to people just beginning, with the understanding that if you cast clear dice then you will have bubbles. As well, the chance you will have voids increases significantly if using the sprue molds. One way to help eliminate that is by using a slower curing resin and finding a way to vibrate the mold after its been filled.
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 4 жыл бұрын
None of these actually require a pressure pot. But if you want to use them for pressure casted dice with no bubbles, it's nice :) Yes you can totally vibrate the mold if you have something that vibrates for an extended period

I've been interested in making my own resin dice for a while especially now cause my fiance and I are playing more DnD. I think I'll be watching all your videos cause I like the way you explain it!

my girlfriend and i have been getting into dnd lately, and i’m thinking of making us some dice, but every time i try to find resin i end up seeing so many things that i’m not sure if i need (my only experience with resin was an arts n crafts kit), thank you so much for this video 💕
