The one pro you didn't mention (that I love) is the 5-second rule: you have five seconds to decide on what phase you are going and five seconds to decide what it is you're doing. I've played way too many D&D games with people playing spellcasters that take forever to decide the perfect spell to cast. With Bounty Hunter, if you hesitate, you do nothing...and you probably end up dead. Love the push for action!

This is what I've been looking for to restart my roleplaying hobby. Neither I nor my player base have the time for wading through complex combat rules for 12 hours anymore in our very limited grown-up-with-responsibilities spare time. This will be enough to be able to tell a tale without calculating every tedious detail of a realistic simulation of aiming a gun.

Interesting and looks fun! I recently designed a system around the idea of simplicity and quicker sessions. Kept in the chaos factor of dice, added "resources" to spend to get better results more deliberately (kind of a half-way to your AP system). Where I made things a straight spending game is character knowledge: you only have "common' knowledge based on your character, but in order to learn more about something you interact with, you have to spend tokens to say, "My character knows about that - expound!" Needs playtesting, though. Not having any luck gathering RPG friends after the COVID hiatus... -_-

Reminds me of several online RPGs I've played. Some of those use dice and some don't, but what they have in common is that the RP is or primarily importance - even more important than winning. Not suitable to all players, but great for the right players. Good job.

I have recently purchased the omnibus, I wish I had seen the Kickstarter in time to order a physical copy but shipping is not worldwide so I am working with the PDF. What I like about such a rules light system is that it can be adapted to anything in a very short amount of time and plug in rules are very easy to develop. I would love to see a channel on your discord to discuss and there is so much potential to personalize this game to the needs of any IP or rpg group. Greak work.

I never really liked the idea of the "no mechanics" ttrpgs, but this seems like it's set up in such a way that you can approach that, while still having mechanics. I'm definitely going to have to pick this up soon, once I actually have the money, lol. As for an interesting Bounty Hunter character, I don't know the mechanics, but I can create an idea here and once I get the game I can see how closely I can align it. An idea that popped into my head is what would essentially be a smuggler who's more about helping people than simply making a profit. He's the guy who's going to talk his team into allowing a wanted insurgent onto the ship to smuggle them to a safe place. Perhaps they are bringing needed supplies to a planet or even just a town that has been locked down by the "imperial" big wigs. They'd be charming and as necessary, deceptive, and I'd probably make them a doctor to boot. The down side to this character is that if they can't talk their way out of trouble, they need the other players, because they won't be skilled in fighting. They lean towards peaceful solutions, but aren't tied to them. They won't sit there and drag their feet when violent action needs to be taken. This character won't be a curmudgeon with a heart of gold, I'm leaning towards a character who's more serious and down to business. When thanked, they'll just kind of acknowledge the compliment or appreciation and move on. Now, I say they'll be charming or deceptive, but as a serious, generally logical person, they'll generally stick to the truth and how it benefits or harms the person to do their persuasion. I think the final twist, if you will, is that this character is pretty close to true neutral. They don't much care about any of the things they're doing, but perhaps their mother or some beloved figure was very much about helping people and they agreed to do good to make this person happy. In many situations, they'll think to themselves "What would my loved one do in this situation?" They do good things, big and small, known and secret, because they wish to make their loved one happy. If the loved one died, they would continue the legacy of good deeds in their honor. I think I'd need to pick some third thing to really flesh their skills out, but I don't know all the options, so I'll leave that until I get the book and can look at it. Edit: So I was looking at your site and I saw the character sheet and saw the abilities. I don't know how many you start with or exactly what they do, but I'll list off the abilities that this character would prioritize. Medicine, logic, science, evaluate, bargain, investigate, psychology, deception, history, obscure lore and culture. You may have noticed, this guys a "smuggler" that has almost no smuggling abilities. That's because he isn't trained to do so, he'll just do so when it is a good thing to do. He's the guy who's going to know a lot and figure out the rest and hopefully get you some good deals and talk you out of some bad situations, but also probably talk the party into some of those said situations in the first place, lol. The thing is, I wouldn't play this character like a scholar, though he has a lot of abilities that imply it. It would be more like a lot of that stuff is stuff he learned growing up and is useful. He isn't going to drag the party to some empty ruins to study them.

First of. I am backer, got my pdf early and am lucky enough to have a group who gsve it a shot. I/ we like the general rules. Streamlined, easy to understand and it works..... in most situations. It takes getting used to and PRACTICE. Mostly for the GM. We had the most problem woth combat. You announce what you do (and i'll keep it VERY basic) and it which phase. Attack first. 1 AP. You do the attack. 1AP. Now you cannot defend for the rest of the round. This can turn very ugly quickly if the player/s is outnumbered. NOW it is important for the GM to know what he is doing. Sample characters in the rules go from simple thugs who may only have 5 AP total to highly skilled Alien Mercenary who may have 50! And remeber, these are their hp as well. What will a thug do if hit by a weapon can kill him in one hit? Defend, probably. But his 4 goon friends, and their leader? How are they equipped? With 5 or 7 AP total each, when do they get their "one shot in" as one of my players asked. And it put me in the defensive when I realized, that I - while planning a very simple adventure - still had other, more elaborat systems in the back of my mind. 4 Adventurers against 6 goons and a luitenant turned into a bloodfest. Because of my inexperience with the rules. Combat is super fast. 20 AP (for beginning pc, you do gain ap as you gsin fame) are not a lot. Travel to a planet, travel in an unknown city, question npcs, my players had spent 3-7 ap's by the time this engagement took place.... . And they refused resting, because that "felt gamey and to much pcrpg" like. Hookay. .... Anyway , we had fun, but fighting gets alittle used to compared to other combat heavy ttrpg's. Nobody can take many hits. When does one retreat (as an npc especially)? Hired thugs can take one hit only. Lui's two, maybe. Very realistic. .... but not ... heroic or epic. Looong story short: we enjoyed most of the rules, but had problems with the "climactic conclusions" of the evening. My group is by no means battle orientated, more sleuths than fighters, but they do expect a big (often longer lasting) fight at the end.(past experiences and all) This will take some time to get the pacing right.

Thanks for this review! It's very informative. I just want to say that as someone who generally prefers combat light plot heavy games and systems like cortex or call of cthulhu, i don't really see this as a problem. The general setting seems to be your average near realistic sci-fi thing and for that, the simplicity sounds like a good choice. After all, characters in them aren't supposed to be the one and only superhuman heroes, they are rather clever people who know when to pick a fight and when to run. Han Solo may be a stretch. Alien, Star Trek, and Firefly come to mind.
@HowtobeaGreatGM
@HowtobeaGreatGM 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. If the PCs run into a gang of people and are outnumbered, and those people are armed with range weapons, the PCs had better have a great plan to overcome that gang's sheer output of damage. The first paragraph in the book says: Plan an exit before you go in. Also - the useful trick I use: The PCs wake up from unconsciousness and are being help prisoner by the goons, have been left naked and alone on a roadside, are about to be fed to a Trarfye Rhino Eel, ie. the gang wants to make an example of the PCs.
@Tasla1
@Tasla1 3 жыл бұрын
@@HowtobeaGreatGM Thank you for your answer. Yes, they learned that the hard way. What I have to learn and get to grips with is that I aa a GM can no longer help them on the fly. No roll for attack meant no possibility of a sudden weapons jam. (It was a situational thing, I could not bring up a sudden police patrol or other npcs to spring the players out, for exsmple.) I had gotten used to certain "unobtrusive" methods to add or decrease drama. With this rules set I have to rethink my aproaches to certain encounters.

I would love to see a video on how the book was made. I also have a question about the AP system. Since running out of AP means you will automatically fail at everything, if/how do you handle different players going through their AP at different rates resulting in some players not being able to do anything anymore and the game becoming boring for them while they wait for the long rest?
@HowtobeaGreatGM
@HowtobeaGreatGM 3 жыл бұрын
There are a few mechanics that allow PCs to regain AP. But if they use up all their AP, they're going to have to think creatively on what they can do to help that doesn't require AP spend. Switching on or off lights, opening or closing doors, throwing a pot to make a noise... this game is about using creativity and imagination rather than rules or mechanics to resolve situations.

I picked up a copy of the game a while ago and it looks sick! I haven't run a game yet but looking forward to it. I do have a question though. I don't see a reason for using a pistol over a rifle or even sniper rifle. They all use the same skill and the only stats they have are damage and range. Has anyone else had this problem and what have you done to solve it? i.e adding some disadvantage to using a rifle in exchange for the increased damage, or an advantage to pistols over the increased damage of the rifle.

Great system are you going to work on a fantasy edition? And Personally, I think the skills could be more condensed like in my system I have only 10, Tactics, Understanding, Knowledge, Will, Power, Nimble, Speed, Sensing, Talk, Vehicle, Stealth. As more general skills allow for the feeling of having the right skill in Character creation without having to have dozens or in some cases hundreds of them. Edit=refinements

How do you track the passage of time? If PCs can only heal, restore AP once every 24 hours in the game world. How does the GM track passage of time? Obviously if its a long journey across a planet or going between Star Systems you could say 8 hours pass etc. But what about spending time at several locations? Does the GM compute this or the Players do so with the GM in agreement? Also is there a Reddit page or somewhere on the web where more questions (which is obscure or not mentioned in the Rules) can be asked and the community in the know could answer them?
@SkySpiral7_Lets_play
@SkySpiral7_Lets_play 2 жыл бұрын
There's a psychological problem with choosing to fail. When you said that players choose to fail to conserve AP I thought of why I can't stand Mouse Guard. I played Mouse Guard but the game expects players to remind GMs of complications in order to cause themselves to fail (book's example is a peg leg slipping off a crab's back). Failing in this way gives actions that can be spent in town (otherwise you get none). So either I failed and felt like a loser or I succeeded and felt like a loser when I got to town. Contrast Call of Cthulhu where if a player randomly fails they get a chance to increase that skill. I can blame the dice (instead of myself) for failure and get compensated to soften the blow. Your system can't completely avoid players choosing failure but if you included compensation (such as regaining 0.5 AP) when they choose to fail (not when beaten in combat etc) that would soften the blow. Ideally players would know that a good narrative includes failure (and that no one has psychological hang ups like I do) but that's something you can't control. Also it sounded like AP was also character health? That might be a good way to keep things simple but you'd have to limit healing to avoid repeated medical care to get enough AP to pass everything.

The system doesn't have any specific rules for "powers", so the answer is "No", but 1) Guy mentioned somewhere that he has some ideas about a magic system; 2) system as it is is very extendable. You can just homebrew some new magic related skills, add your spells, and roll with it: you have a magic school skill, you spend X AP and the spell is cast.
