Dicey Dungeons: Nintendo Switch Game Review

Dicey Dungeons is so much more than you would likely guess by the graphics and story. It provides an intensely challenging combat dynamic with intricate deck-building, all in the skin of a Dungeon-Crawling RPG. Not to mention that the total gaming experience will take you as long as any JRPG to beat. Six unique characters, hidden gaming mechanics, and a total absence of hand-holding create an immersive experience of discovery.

Have to say, this is one of your best reviews to date. I played this on PC, don’t recall how far i progressed - but can say all of your comments are accurate, and clearly convey the experience of playing this game. The developer, Terry Cavanaugh, always creates a well-thought out product, across a variety of genres (aside from this, VVVVVV and Super Hexagon are two of his better-known games).

@@BudgetGamerChannel I think the quality is high because Dicey Dungeons is a tricky game to explain, as it doesn’t exactly fit into the usual tropes and forms, but you still were clear, succinct, and accurate in your descriptions. And you made it a point to highlight the different play mechanics of the various characters, which I think is a central point of the game. I think a number of reviews missed or glossed over that point, or mostly stayed within deck-building or rogue-lite frameworks. You did mention those things as relevant, but most of all you stayed true to the product itself. To quote Wallace Stevens, “not ideas about the thing, but the thing itself”

I'm a big fan of slay the spire and monster train. I hated this game at first, but after you learn how the mechanics work. I can hardly put it down.

I enjoy this game a lot! Just unlocked the Jester and am working my way through Robot. These kind of games come in handy on the switch seeing as my joycons disconnect at times making it not so functional trying to play an action game. I alternate between this and Slay the Spire when I want to play something along these lines. That was a nice in depth review. I'll check out some more and subscribe. Thanks!

VERY impressive length (howlongtobeat puts it at between 26 and 56 hours). Since many indie games are rather short, maybe it would be interesting to put together a video / a playlist of the longest games reviewed here ?

Easily one of my new favorite games this year, real challenge to it and it doesn't back down, tons of strategy to each character and enemies to keep me addicted, terry cavanagh is a mad genius

Witch wasn't too bad until I hit episode 4, at which point she gets stupidly hard! I do remember having problems with Warrior 2, Thief 3, and one of the others on my way!

@@BudgetGamerChannel The Uptick episode is really tough, but the others aren't too bad once you learn the key to success: countdown builds. If you use Crowbar+ or Wrecking Ball+ combined with lots of countdown equipment, you'll basically be unstoppable!

There’s a very (very) similar game called Dicey Elementalist on mobile. The ads are annoying but if you play in airplane mode it’s fine.

This is the most difficult game I've ever played. And the cheating by the game itself is despicable. You finally get close to being able to beat the first level and you're thrilled to see that all of your dice are 4's, 5's, and 6's but then they suddenly become 1's across the board. What's the point of making a game that is too hard to be enjoyable?
