Dear Joe... I was hanging to the Catholic Church by a thread.... Until I stumbled into you... Into your video about real worship to be exact . It was as if a blindfold was removed from my eyes. Since then I have listened to many of your podcasts, and I am learning so much.... As a cradle catholic , I realise how little I know! Can't thank you enough. I will gladly support you on patreon , as a small token of my gratitude. God bless you !

The real miracle is that the soldiers of the israelite army slept through it! Don't the Psalms and The Lord tell us He will give us a peaceful sleep, in the midst of the storm He is there?! lol, now THAT I find lifts my spirits even higher!
@RexKochanskiАй бұрын
"The Israelite army slept through it" I would think that the sentinels on the wall of Jerusalem (mentioned in the Psalms, and an obvious military precaution) would have been awake, but whether they had enough natural light to see much would be doubtful (must...not...reference "Game of Thrones"...rats! I couldn't stop myself; rats...or, MICE, plague upon 'em!). Mice, of course, CAN have the plague upon them, within infected fleas (a critical detail which the Egyptians did not realize). Recently it has been discovered that plague bacteria can also infect human body lice, so perhaps "dirty Assyrian" was more than just an insult? In any case, the sentinels, and perhaps more of the defenders of Jerusalem, would certainly notice the terror in the Assyrian camp in the morning, and the remaining soldiers marching away...a little faster than usual, perhaps. Also I can't help but wonder: did this denouement to the taunt influence the Ninevites when Jonah came to call preaching its destruction?

I am always fascinated with biblical events when the supernatural has elements of a natural explanation, thereby providing proof to those who doubt. If that makes sense? Great video! Hope to see more like it.
@mpasaa2 ай бұрын
I think what's also excellent about learning about these historical events is that it helps put Divine intervention into perspective and keeps that childish, 'hollywood-esque' view out of the discussion. Too often people view these supernatural events as if they have to match the latest Marvel movie and that's not the case at all. Very good description of this Biblical story....enjoyable.

That’s really cool. Loved the insight into Assyrian propaganda. One caution, but I’m not a scholar: Josephus is Jewish, so trusting him to bring us the Babylonian perspective may be naive (I don’t know, just recognizing this is another Jewish scholar agreeing with scripture. For all I know, he’s being faithful to the Babylonian perspective, of course).
@shamelesspopery2 ай бұрын
That's a completely fair point, and there's reason to be cautious in accepting such accounts. But having said that, Berossus's writings were still around at the time of Josephus, making it significantly less likely that he's just making this up. (Also, Berossus' account DOES differ from the Jewish account in speak of plague instead of angels, although this is easy to harmonize). For a readable piece on both Berossus's own (selective) fidelity to Babylonian history, and a bit on the history of the fragments of Berossus, I found Paul-Alain Beaulieu's "Berossus on Late Babylonian History" helpful.

I got curious. I looked up acquired diseases that kill overnight. There are types of malaria and plague that do just that. If it came from mice, or the fleas they carry, the cause of their deaths could be pneumonic plague.

I've been thinking about this question for days and reading articles on the subject, but it seems impossible to find a satisfactory answer. After all, what is the origin of the different “races” among humans? 1) If the Tower of Babel episode is a literal historical fact, then why does the "founding myth" of the oldest civilizations we know (India, Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, etc.) have no event similar to this? The great flood is a story shared by many ancient civilizations, but the Tower of Babel is not. Why? 2) If the story of the Tower of Babel is only symbolic and metaphorical, then why the "punishment" described in Genesis is that God confused their language and scattered them across the face of the Earth? It seems a bad metaphor. We all know that the mere existence of different languages in the world is not the main reason that generates discord and separation between peoples; but rather the existence of conflicting cultures, values, interests and worldviews. Learning a new language is much easier than assimilating another culture or religion. Furthermore, recent decades seem to confirm that a people's culture is closely linked to its biological component (e.g.: the meticulousness and introspection of the Japanese people and the extroverted and rhythmic character of African people). 3) Symbolically or literally, after the destruction of the Tower of Babel, different civilizations and ethnicities would have formed. Does this mean that, if this is a fact, God would have abandoned all non-Jewish peoples until the expansion of Christianity throughout the world? How can I, a Bronze Age Chinese citizen, be judged according to a rule arising from a revelation that was never presented to me? It's like that basic question about Protestantism: so would God have abandoned his sheep for more than a thousand years until the lightning struck Luther's head and he finally restored the true Church? Is the so-called natural law that exists in all human hearts sufficient to answer this question?
@carolinajackson7621Ай бұрын
Hello! The topic of the tower of Babel is a fascinating one. I would recommend a book by Bodie Hodge called The Tower of Babel. Of course it's a true story! There are no human "races", just more or less melanine or fat above the eyes.
@QuaseQuasimodoАй бұрын
@@carolinajackson7621 The concept of race is not only linked to melanin, but to several other genetic factors. Anyway, thanks for the book recommendation.
@carolinajackson7621Ай бұрын
@QuaseQuasimodo I understand what u mean, & I was very brief in my explanation. A book about the topic of human "races" from a Christian point of view would be One Blood, by Ken Ham: "And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation" (Acts 17, 26)

If you don't believe in a direct angelic intervention, you have two problems: what kind of pest,virus,etc.can kill so fast and sudden. Secondly, the same angel is mentioned when it strikes the first born of Egipt,avoiding ( so it can discern!) the Jews. If this Assyrian massacre is not taken literally, that the other story is not true,which raise huge problem. So decide!
@carolinajackson7621Ай бұрын
Great explanation! There is NO reason for not taking this episode literally.

If it is written in the Bible then it is true: Angels didn't just smite the enemies of Israel but they've also destroyed thousands of Israelites at God's command..."Go and tell David. this is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options, choose one for me to carry against you.2 Samuel 24:12.-17 Read the whole chapter for full details.
