In the 1990s, young women at Antioch College created the country’s first affirmative consent policy for sex. They were publicly mocked - even “S.N.L.” weighed in. Here’s what they think now.

Someone asks me for $5, and I say, “Sure, go get it from my purse,”. The next time they want $5 from me, they take it straight from my purse without asking. It makes sense though; I already gave them my consent once, so I never have to do it again. /sarcasm

Another example is someone asks me for $5, and i say, "sure, go get it from my purse," then the next day i regret it and say that he stole from me... oh wait.

storm crow but the question is, were you even in a position to lend someone $5? Say that you were exhausted and didn’t really think it through before lending the money-and the other party knew that. This example doesn’t really work with a small amount of money but the point remains. It isn’t about regretting and then taking back consent: this is about whether both parties were in a position to ably give consent in the first place.

It seems to me either neurotic or manipulative. Probably the second one. Putting up a show for the nice, redemptive New York Times piece. A cheap trick to tell and sell a story in a capsule-format and make sure that you get the right emotional response from the viewer. Viewer Manipulation 101, you know. Very basic stuff.

It looks genuine from my point of view. Being ridiculed at a national level and then decades later your views become popular would probably have a strong effect.

adhominems oh I dont doubt the sincerity of the women... I doubt the skills of the video-journalist and editor. Kind of a hack job.

There is no way to present anything unbiased or absolutely "truthful". You should watch Jean Rouch's Chronicle of a Summer. It is his attempt to let the viewer in on the process and allowing him behind the scenes. But even that is somewhat staged, because we all stage something at all times. We are all self-conscious in the most literal sense - that is conscious of self. So yes, even part of the women crying is a performance. You can't not perform. But as an ethnomethotodological sociologist social facts are everything that feels real in its consequences. And when the NYT choses a perspective that presents these women as emotionally charged, because of a movement that has affected the course of their lives, it choses to strategically place them in a position where that and only that becomes apparent about them. It's not non-biased, but it's also not necessarily deceitful manipulation.
