Brenden Schaeffer discusses the recent comments made by Cardinals team president Bill DeWitt III on 'The Kilcoyne Conversation' podcast with Martin Kilcoyne (hosted by the Scoops Sports Network).
DeWitt referred to the notion of Cardinals fans deciding not to show up to games anymore in order to send a message to ownership regarding the fans' displeasure with the state of the club as an "illogical" line of thought.
In doing so, DeWitt demonstrated a fundamental misunderstanding of what a team's relationship to its fans should be.
Brenden dives into full depth on the comments and many elements surrounding them in this hour-long episode.

The ownership needs to gut the front office, farm system staff, and apologize to the fans that they need to rebuild

Yessir, on the money. The farm system is not developing hitters or pitchers. They have thought they have some studs, then those guys rarely pan out…until they go somewhere else. Scary bad.

Goldschmidt and Arenado came here to win a World Series. Try or not Mozaliak was put in charge of that mission. He has made missteps like trading Alcantara and Gallen for Ozuna and getting nothing for him. I like Contreras even though they dogged him surprisingly. We needed pitching even then more than a catcher for 86 million. The laughing part was a "let them eat cake" moment for DeWitt I personally will have trouble getting over as a fan. You are correct we needed to trade someone for good young pitching, but we never do until their value has slipped. Examples Gorman, Carlson, before he was hurt Edman. We should have gotten more or held onto O'Neill for his final year. Goldy should have been traded at 37 and the last year of his contract even before this season. Trading Hicks was a good prospect move, but not re-signing him for Matz money was a big mistake. Montgomery and Lorenzen available for cheap at the end, they weren't even interested. If it was because they didn't want to come here, then that needs to be questioned. People used to want to play here.

I agree with all of your comments tonight. You’re spot on. Bill seems to think the fans need to show up first, then the Cardinals will compete. Otherwise the fans are at fault if the Cardinals fail. We have always supported this team but they’re still losing. It’s on the front office to make it right with the fans, not the other way around. For the sake of winning, has ownership ever spent to make up for the bad moves Mo has made? No, I seriously doubt it. Bill really came off like an f’ing snot. And another thing, did he sound like a money grubbing jerk when he called the Cardinals a revenue machine?

I watched that entire interview a few days ago. It left me crestfallen while envisioning the future of our team: DeWitt III is obliviously arrogant and entitled and almost seemed to take offense to the notion that we peons have the ability to put a huge dent in the massive profits they've been pocketing. Just look at their priorities. They want to be ahead of the curve in improving the physical infrastructure of the stadium that the DeWitts own, but they are way behind with their baseball infrastructure and didn't invest in it "because of COVID." I don't know of any of the other top teams who stopped spending on bettering their organization because of the pandemic. Excuse after excuse. I've been a hardcore Cardinal fan all of my life. I have the tattoos to prove it. I don't recall any of us asking for ballpark village, restaurant areas, exclusive areas, "new fun stuff coming", etc. All we ask for is a winning team whose success isn't only meaningful because as a byproduct, it increases all of their other revenue streams. Either make the success of the Cardinals baseball team your absolute priority or get us a billionaire who will.

Well said, sir!!! I'm in the same boat-I mean in the 80's Busch stadium was nothing special, except for the 3 NL pennant-winning clubs on the field. That's what we paid to see-THE TEAM. Not the trinkets and restaurants, etc...I realize consumer tastes change over generations, but WINNING cures all. Especially in this town. I said this in an earlier post, they have focused on the nostalgia and promotions rather than the pitching staff, talent development, etc...

In the immortal words of Philly Leotardo-"I wanna talk about a couple tree things..." 1. The organization has stressed the nostalgia angle for so long (Waino bobbleheads, Molina coffee tumblers, Pujols commemorative posters, Cardinals hall of fame voting, etc...) they have forgotten how to actually develop a winning team. They are 30 games under .500 since the PHI playoff debacle of '22. 2. Downtown isn't safe, and that is hurting attendance along with the poor level of play. There is a feeling that some sort of mayhem could break out at any time downtown, and a lot of people don't want to be around it anymore. It is a reason I do not want to take my family there at this point. 3. Marmol isn't the guy, and it turns out that Mozelaik isn't either anymore. But the FO is invested in those guys, so to fire them and move on makes everyone look bad.

What he's saying (Dewitt III) doesn't make sense because if you're spending all of this Money by putting it back "on the field" (allegedly) when in reality you're turning a stupid profit each year and only doing the bare minimum in players and contracts when on paper they're turning a $175 million dollar payroll with a total cash position of $358 million dollars into a $183 million dollars in profit. That's not counting all of the businesses they own around the ballpark making money, Any other money they're making on sponsorships, endorsements, etc. The fact the ownership can try and put the fans on blast for being willing to not show up to see a team fail based on the FACTS that they have cheaped their way the last 10-15 years payroll wise.. hoping and praying they make the playoffs so they can finger point and say "See.. We made the playoffs." When Cardinal fans by in large KNOW those very facts mentioned above and also know that making money is their SOLE motivation meanwhile doing just enough patchwork (Example: Matz, Lynn, Crawford, Mikolas) to say "Hey.. we made moves.. They're not what you the fans wanted nor did they make any darn sense by the way but.. we made moves." 🤣 Moves that would have helped the club this past offseason would have been (For example) trading for Dylan Cease to pair with Sonny Gray instead of signing Lance Lynn because Lynn is cheaper than giving up a few players for a known commodity that performs. It's disingenuous IMO for ownership to treat their fan base (that make them) like they're children who are know nothings. It's one thing to have a direction organizationally (whether build or break down) but this team doesn't have a direction at all. It's like they're flailing about on life support with promises to Cardinals nation to "be patient" when in reality they should be sellers at the deadline this season. Goldy, Arenado, Helsley.. Heck.. I'd even say Gorman too. Send them off for a HUGE haul of TOP prospects. Not medium prospects, Not project prospects.. Actual.. Legit Top Prospects. Once that's done.. Fire the entire organization from top to bottom. Bring in Chaim Bloom to beef up your minor league system. Rebuild around Winn, Walker, Burleson, and Donovan.

@bschaeffer12 Great breakdown! My questions for another video or two on off days concerning ownership/front office are: 1) Is Bill DeWitt's loyalty to John Mozeliak detrimental to team success? Family/friendship over competitive success 2) If the buck stops with Bill DeWitt, why hasn't he forced changes in the organization the last few years? For example, if player development or scouting are failing, you can insist on replacing those pieces directors without replacing Mo. Also, it is my understanding DeWitt is actively involved on baseball decisions and takes a hands-on approach at a distance.

In my personal life, like businesses (including running a baseball team), I have a budget for certain areas including entertainment. I must way the benefits against the cost. This year, my return of my investment (in terms of enjoyment) is not worth the costs (whether at the park or with a subscription to MLB-TV, etc.). This team is hard to watch. So the argument that to be a “true die-hard fan” you must willingly give money despite the product does not hold up for me. I would not pay money to see a concert that promoted a poor performance. Put out a good, entertaining product and “they will come”. DeWitt’s comments, in context, were inappropriate and degrading. I can take my entertainment dollars somewhere else.

@@vernontkdo u not understand how local taxes n supporting professional teams that brings tourists and money to the city/state work? There's a reason every team gets funding to attract tourism so all the local businesses flourish. I live in Palm Beach where the Cards play spring training - during spring training every hotel is booked, restaurants packs, local businesses thrive. When local businesses thrive they hire more employees meaning everyone makes more money, more jobs n supply n demand= high wages- which is also taxes bringing in more $. Plus the money spent on restaurants hotels etc gets taxed bringing more tax money. This is obviously also true for St Louis regular n post season games, not just the fraction of Palm Beach/Jupiter spring training. It's an investment that pays dividends. All that additional spending gets taxed bringing more tax money to the city to continue to reinvest as well. The Cardinals are projected to bring in revenue of $372M this year that all gets taxed as well. As well as players salaries and employees salaries and The Cardinals franchise taxes it pays. The minimum sales tax for state and city in St Louis is 8.99%. Just the direct revenue from the Cards $372M brings in over $32M tax dollars A YEAR. Not including all the other taxed money n money spent to local businesses I mentioned. Missouri income tax is 4.95%, St Louis 1% so 5.95% salary tax. Just the Cardinals players income is $169M- another $10M in taxes. That's almost $50M the Cardinals bring in direct tax money. Add in the rest and it's a lot of money going back to the city n state

I totally disagree with you and number 3. "it's not time to push the panic button?!!!" IT IS TIME TO PUSH SEVERAL THINGS! Look at the Cardinal's all time record, especially since 2016. There has been a general decline. The last year and this year we have completely fallen on our faces. Last place, not 2nd place or 3rd place in the Central - LAST PLACE! This is May already, after this upcoming homestand with Boston, Baltimore and Chicago I expect what I am about to say will be echoed by many others. Time to panic, people need to be replaced starting with the front office and the coaching staff. I think most fans, if they feel their team is competitive and stand a reasonable chance of winning each game they're mostly content. But when the expectation is they don't even stand a chance of winning against any opponent that's when fans lose interest. It becomes painful to watch. And given ownership's attitude I don't think there is even a small chance they will make any attempt at salvaging what's left of this team.

Got it. Utter BS and insulting to our intelligence. To then laugh at and threaten the fanbase like this? That’s like a restaurant telling me “hey, our food is no longer good, but I’m gonna need you to keep paying top dollar for our bad product, otherwise it will get even worse.” cardinals fans have made these people so much money. We won’t forget these comments.

I just think if all of these young players are underperforming and few ever turn out to be very good then it’s the organization that stinks - player development, instructors, coaches, etc - all bad. The older guys are also struggling. Many former Cardinals tend to go to other teams and start playing much better…..it all points to a disaster organization.
