Bird grew up playing with the black workers from a hotel in Indiana when he was younger, and he said he was always appreciative that the older guys let him play. He said he learned how to shoot a higher shot because of that, as one of the MANY benefits from being allowed to compete with the older guys. As you said, Bird's trash talk was about mentally messing with the opponent ... Skin color didn't matter... When Dan Majerle (only white guy on the '88 Olympic team (from Central Michigan))was a rookie with Phoenix, he said Bird told Mark West what he was going to do and West said, "Why are you telling me this"? Bird said ,"I don't talk to rookies", with Majerle standing right there guarding him. Bird has been my favourite athlete of all time since I was a 10 year old in 1982 in Butte, MT.... Skin color had/has nothing to do with it since my grade school coach (Tom Boston, ironically) taught me about Auerbach, Cousy, Russell, KC and Sam Jones, Havlicheck, JoJo White etc...... . I NEVER saw Bird flex, snap his jersey, yell in an opponent's face, "angry" stare at a camera after he mentally messed with an opponent. In fact, there are many instances where he and opponents gave each other "5" after it happened! To finish, I was fortunate to have played NAIA college ball in the early '90's (Dillon, MT) and in my second year we got a JC transfer from Wyoming who was from French Lick, IN, and he said Bird was a good, down to earth dude! Also, a guy from Butte, MT, who was a Miller Lite representative, said he sat with Bird for an hour or so having some beers and talking at the Miller Lite national convention in the Midwest.... he said he was a normal, humble, good guy!!! It makes it even better when you learn that your hero is a good person!! Appreciate your reactions and willingness to learn!! Much love and respect young fella 🤙

Watching those Bird vs. Magic series, plus Jordan, 'Nique, Dr. J, etc, was a real privilege. Larry was an ALL TIME great player even if he never said a word! But the trash talk was his secret weapon. He was a master at getting people off their game. And yes, watched to the end.

Bird was one of the very first to truly exploit the 3-point line. You have to remember that that line was created during Bird's rookie year (1979), and the tactically conservative NBA wasn't automatically going to understand how that line was going to radically transform the league. The change didn't happen overnight. It took a number of years, and it was in that initial "discovery" period where Bird learned how to make the 3-pointer into the dagger in the heart. He was the first; others would follow, with names like Jordan, Bryant, Novitski, LeBron, etc.

A reporter once asked Pat Riley if the championship is on the line who would he want to take the last shot, Bird or Jordan. He said that if the championship were on the line, definitely Jordan. But if his life was on the line, he’d want Bird. ‘Nuff said.

Larry Bird's career stats were 24.6 points per game, 10 rebounds, and 6.3 assist per game and he is only 1 of 3 NBA players to win the league MVP 3 times in a row. The other 2 are Wilt Chambelin and Bill Russell. 👍🙏✌️

From 85 - he retired, Larry played with a broken back that would lose its structural stability. It would lock up in abnormal positions. He would have to get adjustments just to be able to play. Sometimes going straight to the hospital after a game. To spend the night in traction. That's just one of the injuries that he played with. He didn't even use any pain meds, shots, etc. for any of his injuries. Yet he was still able to dominate and put up stats. He was the FOUNDING member of the 50/40/90 club, twice. He led the league in 3 pointers twice 85,86. FIRST 3pt contest winner in 86 then 87, 88. MVP 84 , 85, 86. 2 Finals MVPs, 12 All star, 10 all NBA Teams, 3x All Defense selection. All in 13 years. It took Bird just two seasons to get his first ring. Larry turned the Celtics around his first season. From a 29 - 53 season to 61 - 21 season. Larry's one of 8 hall of famers to win rookie of the year & be named to the all NBA first team. The only one so far to have those honors after Larry is Tim Duncan. Larry Bird is the only player to win Rookie of the Year, League MVP, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, coach of the year & executive of the year. Larry is the only player Jordan couldn't beat. 6 -0 playoffs; 17 - 11 reg. I played point guard in H.S. & grew up watching Larry Byrd (Mohammad Ali & Larry Byrd were my Dad's favorite athletes) & IMHO what made Larry B. the greatest, obviously wasn't his jumping ability, his speed (or lack thereof), or even his shooting ability, which was pretty amazing, but his INCREDIBLE sixth-sense for knowing EXACTLY where the ball was at ANY given moment in the game & EXACTLY where it would be, BEFORE it arrived, which allowed him to take advantage of his opponents who looked like they were playing catchup; I'll never forget watching him, he had a gift that was almost supernatural!

82-88 Bird was next level. People forget he was the best player in the league 82-86, magic was always top 3-5 player but it wasn't until 84 that he really became the magic that everybody remembers best and by the 86-87 season, he had surpassed bird. Larry Bird has said 87 was the first year he felt he was no longer the best player on any court he stepped on and that magic had surpassed him. But peak Bird is top 5 all time for guards and forwards. MJ, Magic, LeBron, Kobe and Bird. And really, only Kareem and Shaq as centers were more impactful at their peaks as big men.

The nba mvp from 84-86 I think. Won the three point contest with his jacket still on after telling the other players he was going to and they were playing for second place. The only one Jordan could not beat in the playoffs. Only a back injury stopped him from numerous records and shortened his career.

Wasnt scared to call out his own team at times, after game 3 of the 1984 finals vs the Lakers which they lost, in his post game interview he said "we played like a bunch of sissies". They would go on to win the series and he won the series MVP for his 2nd championship with the Celtics and at that point the Celtics as a franchise were still undefeated against the Lakers in the NBA finals which I believe was 8-0 going back to the Bill Russell era teams.

Bird talking trash..... Oh, yes. During the very heated games the Celtics played vs. Detroit in those days ( it was one of the nastiest rivalries from any era of the NBA they absolutely hated each other and couldn't hide it ) Bird would most times draw Dennis Rodman to guard him being the teams best and one of the best defenders all time. And all through the game Bird would be yelling to his team mates with Rodman right on his hip " Hey guys there's nobody guarding me ! Get me the ball ! " And " I'm wide open !! Can't you see there's no one on me ? ! " Then turn and drain fade away after fade away in Rodman's face, even though Dennis had about 4 inches on Larry and was so much quicker and athletic and had such a longer wing span he couldn't do anything about it. Then Legend would run by the Detroit bench and yell to Chuck Daly " Hey Chuck !! You should at least put somebody on me down there, I'm killing you guys . " 18 wheeler sized nuts on that man.

There's quite a few trash talking vids. Jason Williams has one (suicide one)...even Gary Payton has a short story about Bird. He's the GOAT for a reason

I think you misheard the Rookie comment, Clyde called Larry confident, and Larry responded, "confident? you're a rookie, you don't know anything"

There's another dozen or more stories. He trashed the Phoenix bench, he trashed Person another time, he trashed Shawn Kemp, he trashed Rodman, he trashed Doug Collins (Bulls coach) for putting a white guy on him, etc. So funny, unless you're playing against him. But even his opponents speak fondly of Bird. Except for Bill Laimbeer.
