Larry didn’t throw the ball *at* college-aged Jordan… he threw it well *over* his head, firing it down the whole length of the court. Larry was a master at full-court passes over the heads of entire opposing teams. He was just “preparing” Jordon for the future 😂

Larry was great at EVERYTHING. Coach of the year, Best general mrg. of the year, and 3X MVP (3 in a row, only 2 others have done this). He was clutch and made his teammates better. Off the court he was a regular guy, a guy you could chill with over a beer.

My favorite savage moment was when Dennis Rodman (an all time great defender in the NBA) was guarding Bird. He was attached to his hip. Bird just drops a 3 in his face and yells, “I’m wide open!” Next time down the court, he does it again, “Hey guys, give me the ball, Im open!” Completely ignoring Rodman. As if he’s invisible. Then yells at the Pistons coach, “Hey, you better put someone on me or I’m going for 60 tonight!”… imagine the disrespect. 😂

Favorite Larry Bird savage moment was when he actually didn't make it to the 3-point contest due to Injury. Reporter asks Craig Hodges "Is your win due to Larry Bird's non-participation due to injury?" Craig Hodges "Larry knows where he can find me." Once on the night before an away game Larry and a teammate went to a bar. Some of the home team's cheerleaders were there (out of uniform, of course) and decided to play Mata Hari -- get Bird drunk so he'd have to play the next day with a hangover. So they bought him every round he'd take. The next night Bird came out and absolutely DOMINATED. Went by the cheerleaders and said "thanks for the beers."

Larry Bird was listed at 6'9", which he may have been when he entered the league, but by the time he had been there a year or so, he appeared to be at least 6'10", or possibly 6'11". There are many images of him beside Magic Johnson, where he is clearly about 2" taller, and there's footage of him jawing face to face with 7'2" Kareem , where there appears to be only 2 or 3 inches difference in their heights.
@jasonavery
@jasonavery Жыл бұрын
Agreed. He lied about his height to get opponents to underestimate him. He’s clearly 6’10” at minimum. He stood up to Kareem and he wasn’t much shorter.

@@jasonavery That and wearing shoes probably put another 1/2 inch to an inch on that. I think those 'official' heights are taken while they are not in shoes. So if he fudged his height and was actually 6'10'' to 6'10 1/2" barefoot, then put on shoes... : )

I'm a huge NCAA basketball fan and I'm loving life with March Madness underway. I don't watch the NBA anymore because this was the era of basketball that I grew up watching back in the '80's and today's NBA can't compete. The "Hick from French Lick" was anything but that, here's a few of his accomplishments ; National College Player of the Year in 1979, NBA Rookie of the Year in 1980, 3× NBA champion '81, '84, '86, NBA Finals MVP '84, '86, 3 consecutive NBA MVP titles '84, '85, '86 ( joining only Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell in accomplishing that feat), 12 time NBA All-star (out of his 13 seasons), 3 consecutive 3 Point Contest Champion '86, '87, '88, and 3 time member of the 50-40-90 club. Larry Legend, Magic Johnson, and the Celtics/Lakers rivalry saved the NBA from obscurity and brought it back to popularity. Thanks for the reaction, great job. 👍✌️

You want to watch (and maybe not react) to a video that describes Bird's very tough childhood in a very poor town in Indiana. It follows him though his high school years, early college rivalry with Magic Johnson, his short time at Indiana U, then Indiana State.The video sets the stage for the transformation of the NBA. If you're going to continue to do Bird reactions, some of your questions will be answered and you'll appreciate the later KZfaq videos. His biography really begins around 7 min.

One thing to keep in mind, the NBA had terrible ratings back then, and Larry Bird and the Celtics, and Magic Johnson and the Lakers are credited for bringing the ratings back up in the NBA. Lebron James has said Larry Bird could dominate the game in any era, that's how good he was. That's quite a compliment from an incredibly gifted player who was 9 years old when Larry Bird retired.

The greatest ever. More end of time, game winning shots than anyone. Dropped 47 on Portland left handed! When asked by reporters why he used only his left hand, he said, I'm saving my right hand for LA, we play them tomorrow night! Won 3 MVPs during the greatest era of players. 3 3 point contest in a row , one while wearing his warm up stuff! Played the last 6 years with a broken back and blown Achilles tendon! Let me say this again for the doubters....HE PLAYED HIS LAST 6 SEASONS WITH A BAD ACHILLES TENDON AND A BROKE BACK! He said in an interview, if Len Bias hadn't died, he would have retired in 86 or 87, because Bias would have been the best in the NBA, better than Michael! Because of his back, they took a stationary bike to all games. Larry had to ride it, 1-2 hours before each game, to loosen his back, up!! Was the first 50/40/90 guy. When playing the bulls in conference finals, swept them! As a rookie, on third day of camp, came out and told reporters, this league is nothing, I will dominate this league! Worthy said, he would rather guard Jordan than Bird! Made 2 shots on purpose from behind the backboard! Got the whole Atlanta bench in trouble, for his shooting display against them. When the rockets had the Twin Towers, they should have won 2 titles. Bird and the Celtics, stopped them! He's the goat. Maybe the only better player was pistol Pete, but he just burnt out too soon, plus born with a unusually small heart pump side. He once told an opposing player who has a good first half against him, " are ur parents here, cuz ur not gonna want them to see, what I'm about to do to you!" So Bird drops 27 on him in the second half, and also shut him down. He tells the guy after the game, " that was for ur mom!" Ice cold! He played during an era, when there was no hack a Shaq foul, no finger hand elbow or body check fouls. And when centers and power forwards would break ur bones and punish you, if you went inside! I think it was either Chuck Daily or Pat Riley who said, " u want a end of game shot, pick Jordan. U want a shot to save ur life, pick Bird!"

@@cindyknudson2715 No, it's 'Homes'. I can't post the link but Google 'Larry Bird Dominique Wilkins'. The site is Pop Culture References. Direct quote from Wilkins confirming that Bird said, 'Homes'. "One of the first times I ever played against him, I went out for the opening tip and I went to shake his hand. He just stood there and looked at me stone-faced with his hands behind his back. I was like, ‘Whoa.’ Then we were getting ready for the tip and he says to me, ‘You don’t belong in this league, Homes.’ I couldn’t believe it, but it happened so fast, I didn’t know what to think. Then they had the ball and I was on him and he said, ‘I don’t know why they got you guarding me, Homes. You can’t guard me.’ Then, whap, he hit a 3. Then he came down again and said, ‘They made a mistake putting you on me, Homes,’ and he took another 3. So now I’m hot. I’m hot. I mean, I’m steaming. Then a little while later, I came down on a break and he was backpedaling. I just went right after him. I jumped up and he tried to challenge, but I took that right through the rim. He fell and hit the basket support. He got up and said, ‘I like you, rookie. You’ve got(guts).’ I was happy for a second, and then he said, ‘But I’m still going for 40 on you tonight.’ But I got him. He only scored 39. 'Holmes' doesn't even fit the context of the situation.

If ya don't know - all of these guys in the video are Renowned NBA players; well respected players. They not only dreaded playing him, they respected HIM! YES! Larry Bird IS HIM!!! My homie told me about Larry Legend before he became an NBA player cause my friend was a total Basketball fan. But Larry didn't come into the NBA till 1980 so I knew to expect great things but I never expected his greatness! He had command of the game like no other. He had situational awareness of everyone on the court as well as where the ball was. He was a hustler - in that he would do everything he could to win! No matter if that means he's going to have to take a hit, or hit something, he never stopped trying! Offence, Defense, name it he could do it! His passes, his 'bump passes' are mind blowing. Not only that he was a 'clutch player' when the clock started running out - you could count on Larry Legend to make the shot. One guy - Lakers coach? Said something to the effect that if he wanted to win a game - he'd pick Michael Jordan; but if his life depended upon on shot - he'd pick Larry Bird! He was a team player - he seldom hogged the ball - he elevated his team mates! When a guy hustles like that - you have nothing but respect for The Man! It hurt to see him lying on the side of the court - knowing he wanted to be out there playing! "Larry Bird ULTIMATE Mixtape" by the NBA channel is good! But there are others. Very long one - Channel: SQUADawkins video: Larry Bird 50 Greatest Moments

What you need to watch is the 1992 Dream Team, that team had 11 Hall of Famers. The team, Bird (Co-Captan), Johnson (Co-Captan), Jordan, Robinson, Ewing, Malone, Barkley, Stockton, Pippen, Laettner, Drexler and Mullin. Then there is the story When Larry walked in to the Pacers practice while the players were stretching and sank ten straight three pointers, then walked off the court like nothing happened Oh, by the way he was age 60 at the time. A little context for you Bird and Magic played one time in 1978 the shared the court as teammates. The very next year they played against each other for the 1979 NCAA Championship and that was the start of the epic rivalry.

@@cindyknudson2715 No kidding, They asked what Holmes meant. Before Homey was Holmes Take the "l" out if it makes it easier.. This was slang in the mid-early 80s. Do you actually think Holmes just has no meaning? I guess alternately he could be calling him a dork, using "Holmes" as a stand in for "Sherlock Holmes."

Sports back in the day were much more physical and a lot more leeway .. I'm thinking y'all are around my youngest sons age.. 24.. so I grew up in a different era of all sports.. Football, Hockey, Basketball, Baseball, Nascar.. stuff went down back then that would never fly today. That's why I sometimes get upset how "nice" sports are today.. It wasn't nice back then. It was complete competition.. Balls to the Walls. and it was fun to watch.
