What would happen to Hobbits and Men after their death? Did they have any sort of afterlife and if so how did it differ to that of the other races of Middle-Earth such as the Dwarves, Orcs, Elves and Ents?

Though he did speak often about the fact that jesus and God were not significant figure roles in his middle earth lore comparing the bible to it. But the philosophy and morals and ethics and beliefs yes. Just so it's known. Tolkien spoke specific about it though..unlike his friend cs lewis and Narnia. He did not want to add biblical figures to his works in that way. He also thought people should care more about christianity and his other philosophy works and writing that this fun past time kids book lore world he created for pleasure. He didn't get why people were so obsessed with it as they have become fully I don't believe. But that is what he is remembered for oddly enough.

Immortality sounds like a very interesting and attractive concept for men who are immortal thinking they can do all the things they didn't have time to do or just repeat the things they like doing more to get more pleasure in it or in pursuing it. But as you said immortality will just make each single event less significant and memorable for a person, and after a long time nothing can make your soul happy or satisfied as everything withers and dies with time but you. Very few understand this dark side of immortality and appreciate having a limited life. That can also explain the relation elves had with nature like the sea and land and stars as these were designed to stay and not change with time, but elves who went to middle earth (the place that morgoth defiled) felt the moving of time even in nature due to the corruption of morgoth in the beginning and started longing to the west where they can be at peace of mind.

first of all, very interesting video, great job as always! And now for something completely different, because I have two topics I wanted to ask about. 1.: I recently watched your video about the Palantiri, and a question crossed my mind: in the movie, when Saruman explained to Gandalf that he used his Palantir to watch the Naz'gul, Gandalf seemed quite upset over the fact that Saruman had used the Palantir, because he considered it too dangerous. The question I ask myself is: What was Gandalf afraid of? Was it Sauron getting information through the connection to Saruman? Or did he actually consider the possibility of Saruman beeing manipulated by evil through the Palantir? Or was he even afraid that an evil force could use the Palantir to throw Saruman's mind into darkness, like Sauron did with Denethor? It just baffled me because at this point, Gandalf had not known that Saruman was a traitor and had trust in Saruman's wisdom, yet he schoolmastered Saruman like a kid that played around with a kitchen knife. and 2.: I started reading "The Hobbit" recently, and I thought about how different Frodo and Bilbo were prepared for their respective adventures. Frodo undertook weeks, even months of careful planning, making sure he won't be missed due to sudden disappearance, gathering information and making preparations for his road to Rivendel. Meanwhile Bilbo, although his destination was far beyond Rivendel, made a hasty decision, ran out of his door and was on the way, not even packing anything. While the dwarfs had made some preparations, I can't help but wonder how little Bilbo was prepared for a much longer trip compared to Frodo. I find this qute interesting for some reason.

They way I understand it is that Elves are immortal. After physical death, Elves materialise in the undying lands of Valinor and reside there in bliss forever whilst Valinor ‘endures’. Eru Iluvatar gave ‘Men’ (everyone else) the gift. That gift was true death with no afterlife or return unless of course the Valar deem it the will of Eru Eluvatar to return them which only happened a handful of times in exceptional circumstances.
@alienz8641
@alienz8641 2 жыл бұрын
The spirits of men did have an Afterlife. They would exit the world of Arda entirely to a place which is implied to be the Timeless Halls where Eru Illuvatar resided. (Basically the LOTR version of Heaven)

Nice video :) :) I definitely would NOT want to be immortal like the elves. Maybe I wouldn't say no if given one opportunity to have some extra centuries of life or to time-travel and see the future, but I definitely wouldn't want to have to life forever - the quote below explains it well. And I agree with you that mortality is precisely what makes life so precious, knowing that we have a time limit to do what we want with it and make the most of it before it's all gone - though I think the idea of life after death, while comforting, can also in some people undermine the former thought and lead to them throwing their chance/s away. I'm not sure what happens to Men after they pass beyond the Halls of Mandos (and I love that, the deliberate ambiguity of what happens after death apart from the certainty that it's not something that one should vainly fight by seeking immortality), but I have a few thoughts. Maybe like you said, Men go to the Timeless Halls to be with Eru Iluvatar (since Eru does seem to favour Men despite them being less like Eru than the elves). Maybe they return to Eru's being from whence they were created. Maybe they go to a new world or a new creation that Eru made beyond the contained universe of Arda (like, say, our world or another world entirely). Or maybe it's something grim like in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, though probably not since the Valar who know of it don't seem to be entirely above it all and yet don't seem concerned with death. "In the end, you just get tired. Tired of the struggle, tired of losing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything turn to dust." - 'Doctor Who', 2007

This is by far one of the most intriguing, thoughtful, and thought-provoking Tolkien lore videos I've come across. The themes and truths succinctly pondered herein certainly transcend to life here on earth. I am a believer, and it gives me hope and strengthens my faith, just as for Prof. Tolkien, I'm sure in some way, the art of his writing mirrored, or at least was somewhat informed by his faith. I'd love to proclaim that I'd see myself like Aragorn, King Ellasar, and happily, graciously await the Gift of Men, but alas, I very well may be infected with the same illness as most real-life humans, and have some fear of the mystery of death. I'd rather have the immortality of the Elves. Nevertheless, I am glad of the promise of the resurexion through Jesus Christ. Obviously this is my opinion, not meant to be pushed on anyone else or to be offensive, nor am I soliciting negative comments about my very real faith. 🙂 Very interesting question and wonderful account. Thank you for sharing!

@@mcsmash4905 As a Christian I don't believe we would learn everything at once the moment we enter Heaven. After listening to some apologists, there seems to be an understanding that we, as servants in Christ, would actually learn alongside Jesus. This I greatly believe as that would follow the consistency of God's personal relationship with His children. This time, evil won't be there to intervene, and death and time will no longer be of consequence.

To be a fan of any one of the Inklings, Tolkien, CS Lewis, Charles Williams, etc. is to (maybe) understand and appreciate the Renaissance paradox of loving both the Christian and pagan Greco-Roman heritage (as long as I'm dropping names, Dante's Divine Comedy embodies the paradox...check out CS Lewis's Cliche Came Out Of Its Cage...& CS Lewis's Till We All Have Faces...but again I digress) In the 2004 Troy movie, Achilles the Greek hero (Brad Pitt) is romancing ( so to speak) Briseis, a Trojan prisoner of war (Rose Byrne) "I'll tell you a secret...something they don't teach you in your temple. The gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal. Because any moment might be our last. Everything's more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. The downside is that eventually, time would start to blend together and little things just wouldnt be the same. In the case of the Elves, being bound to Arda also means that as the magic fades from Middle Earth, they must leave and never return. As much of an Edenic place as Valinor is, leaving your true home forever and never being able to return would be a heavy sorrow to live with (to say nothing of anyone youve lost), especially given that Tolkien's Elves dont really have the capacity to move beyond grief

Again, a very interesting and made with Love and Passion, Video about Tolkien's Work! 👍 It just came to my Mind, nothing about this Video, but i think, i have read /thought to much about this wonderful World J. R. R Tolkien made us all as a Gift. 🤯😏😁 How about a short Vid about Ghan-buri-Ghan(and his People...) and their Existence? Beside the Help Rohan got from him/them. Just a Thought after a sleepless Night..😴 🍀 All the Best and Thank You!!! 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🎶✌️😊

we will beat our own death soon. We are working on cybernetics immortal bodies
@NZBigfoot

We can already be immortal, just have to figure out how to stop the telomere decay with our genes. the longer we live the shorter they get, eventually the decay starts hitting critical parts of our genes and that becomes aging and breaking down of cells and cancers. No need to go cybernetic. Hell as a species were naturally living longer anyway (Centenarians are really common now, compared to 20-30 years ago so who knows how long the healthy children of the last 20 years will live when they get to that age bracket, and how much fitter they will be that age too).

I like to think Hobbits go to Gardens of Yvanna. And it is connected to afterlife of dwarves since Aúle and Yvanna are married. Thorin and Bilbo finally be together XD. I also love how Tolkien tried to justify mortality itself. As a deeply religious man it is to be expected.

You know i don't think being willing to die is a sign of wisdom. I think to a lot of people, leaving the people they care about is a bigger deal than getting to be part of the next world. It's foolish to try and live forever. But there's nothing wrong with wanting to be with your loved ones as long as you can, more than wanting to be part of "God" next song.

Personally, I believe that the elves got the better deal & I doubt that Eru would have left them out of the second music.
@BroadwayRonMexico

Early on, it'd seem like the Elves have the better deal, and in a world that isn't fallen, they would. But eventually, as the magic fades from the world,your fate becomes uncertain as you grow more and more weary. Even in the Undying Lands of Valinor, the years would start to blend together and you'd be forever lamenting not just those you lost, but your true home of Middle Earth that you can no longer return to. Even in death, you're either going to be stuck in Purgatory forever, or just come right back as you were before after a bit of time passes Men get to leave the fallen, dying world behind them.

Are Valar actually bound to Arda? They were not a part of the creation, they were offsprings of Eru Iluvatar's mind.

I tend to tell all who wish for immortality: "Never fear death. Death is honest and dos not judge you any differently no matter who or what you are. Your mortality is a gift that allows you to embrace the final rest. As we have our glory in life, so dos the horrors also come forth from us as well. With immortality, you are doomed to se both but never as much of the glory as you will see the failures and horrors of what we bring forth. So I feel happy knowing that I live on my borrowed time until the day where I can finally greet my old friend. Who has always watched over me and gifted my passed on loved ones the same gift as I will be given when my time has come. And when that time is nigh I will welcome it with open arms."

If I was a being in the world of arda, I would very much like to be an Elf. For the immortality, but not for being immortal at all, but to be able to witness great accomplishments, watch great deeds happening and heroes ride and fall... For instance, I really like the story of Elrond, for he is the son of the slayer of ancalagon, son of Earendil, he lived in the times were balrogs and feller things walked the earth, he knew a lot of things, and it's possible that he even saw Ancalagon itself, after that be able to carry on, write stories, create great music's and cities full of memory and splendor... ...so on

Less smart ass answer: All spirits immediately upon death enter the Unseen realm; when they're "alive" they're in both the seen and unseen at the same time. From this point, they are summoned to Mandos and can chose to go or not. Otherwise they can wonder the unseen realm; where their powers are greatly diminished when they are harmed substantially as to losing their "raiment" of the world. Some may repent to the Valar, some may not. Depends how stubborn. As for Morgoth, the Valar will likely and understandably never trust him again. Or perhaps they think they can (Manwe doesn't understand how beings can be incredible poop faces) and maybe that's how he is let loose to start dagor dagorath. Tolkien went all over the place as time went on, recanting many things from flat earth Arda originally, to always round earth Arda. From their being an End of the World battle, not being such a thing. Also, he is purposefully unclear whether the Ainur who enter into Ea are really bounded by decry of Eru or "or it is the necessity of their love" meaning they chose to be bound to it as they're completely enthralled by Ea until it is complete. And that there are more than one Arda and set of powerful Valar for those planetary realms. Based on both wishy washy Tolkien: They're absolutely immortal. They don't really die in the first place; Valar and the Maiar spirits don't really need to clothe themselves in the stuff of Arda (with flesh or any substances); they can be visible or invisible. Their powers however are diminished (Sauron), and they can be forced through the gates of the night into the void (Morgoth).

In real life only the perishing are afraid because fear is reserved for those Who are under judgement. In Middle Earth fear appeared largely imagined because it seems implied that everybody gets a pass, though who really knows since Tolkien was so vague. I've always viewed the Elves as almost a third tier of the angelic powers and their fate as being natural considering the lore. I can't believe that as children of Iluvatar, however, that they will be relegated to insignificance after Dagor Dagorath. This would be pathetic and out of tune with the knowable/guessable nature of Iluvatar. I think ALL the children, Dwarves included, will have special new gifts and roles to play after the end of the old. But men have a seemingly surpassing role by virtue of the blind faith required of them. The reward is, and ought to be, fairly stellar just as it is promised to be in real life under Tolkien's Catholic beliefs. Notice Turin who foreshadows men of the future, has been given godlike powers, enough to slay even Morgoth, the mightiest of the Valar. Though I think great things await all the races, it might be the most rewarding to be a man.
