2013 Hyundai Genesis owner here. Purchased in 2015 with 35k on the clock. Fast forward to today and I have 130k miles and I have only had 1 repair to date (antilock brake servo manifold) - replaced with used part for around $100 and $30 worth of brake fluid. Mobile 1 oil, factory Hyundai oil filters, air filter, tires and recently, a new battery due to age. One of the BEST undervalued cars currently on the market. It's also a dead ringer for a late 2000's S-class Mercedes Benz. In 2015, I paid $19,500 which was WAY less than half price from the sticker.

@@chepzgaming5977 yeah I hate to say it but I’d avoid it. The 2012 is the first year of GDI and first year of the new 8-speed Hyundai made transmission. Yes it’s faster and yes it drives better but it’s not as reliable as it hasn’t been around long enough to work out the flaws. 2009-2011 engines are multi port engines and are simpler. The transmission options are an Aisin (Toyota) transmission and a ZF 6-speed. Both are reliable and there are numerous people in forums with over 200k miles. Haven’t seen many after that

Easy fix! Check the variable valve control solenoid in bank 1 and the wiring which leads around hot parts of the engine. Those things are notoriously bad in these cars. $100 part and takes 20 min. Idles smooth like a champ again. Oh yeah, tell him to change the oil more often with those GDI, the small passages of these valves get easily clogged.

You can't beat a Lexus for comfort, quality and return on cost. I used to look at lower cost cars, but when my wife bought a Lexus, it changed the way I looked at cars. We had a great comfortable ride, it was fast enough, lots of room, and very little maintenance costs - just so reliable - she needed that as a nurse who visits patients at their homes. When patients are dying, their families really don't want an excuse for a non visit because of a broken down car - her RX has not let her down and many of her fellow nurses own RX's - just so dependable in the medical field.

This caught my eye as I just bought a 36K 2016 Hyundai Genesis - and the video got me a little concerned. My brief research came up with the (complicated) OCV oil control valve as a frequent contributor to rough idle and variable valve timing issues. Also mentioned using the Hyundai oil filter as not all aftermarket filters provide the correct flow and that will affect the OCV operation. Not for one second suggesting that it isn't wear, 'cause I'm not smart enough to have any opinion.

At 5:00 he says they are good cars. At 5:38 he says despite the slightly worn cams the transmission runs smooth, the suspension is in excellent shape and that the cars have evolved a very long way. He insists this is a fast, comfortable, and a cross-country car. He appears to hold the vehicle in high estimation; not at the level of Lexus yet, but good. Dartman101 I have a 2012 V6 red Premium with 152 000 kms. I’m the original owner. My interior has none of the abuse of the one in the video and it’s the same light colour. No shaking at idle or when running. Acceleration and passing are effortless. Changed my own spark plugs (NGK ruthenium) and have taken to changing the oil and filter myself every 6000 kms. Use conventional which is what they used at the dealership. Considering switching to high mileage oil. Both engine and transmission seem as good as new. Amazing fuel economy considering the amount of power. May go to 200 000 kms before considering replacing. PS: I live in a Canada.

There are a few notes of special interest regarding the Hyundai Genesis. (1) Original owners were mostly lessors and usually (according to my multiple dealership contacts in California and Nevada) did not change their oil regularly - or otherwise! With all of the dirt and smoke from fires, etc., over the years, and even just plain wear and tear, this induced a lot of unnecessary cam lobe wear and scarring. When buying a used one with no service history, a warranty of some significance, like 5-years parts and labor, is really important. (2) There has been a TSB issued (technical service bulletin for the non-mechanics reading) about a software and sensor change for the 2012 Hyundai 3.8L DOHC GDI 333HP engine with 8-spd Shiftronic transmission that changed the transmission behavior. The original transmission programming resulted in harsh shift up and down, manual or fully automatic. The new software has this trans shifting smooth as… well, smooth. This from personal experience with my 2012 3.8L Sedan that just got the shift TSB fix a week ago. One more thing: (3) These cars are notorious for being difficult to gas up due to the delivery valves constant shutting off. This, of course, is from the fuel air canister being filled with fuel by people filling and then trying to "top off" the tank. If your audience has one (some) like that, replacing the canister is the fix.

I love these cars especially the first-gen. Genesis. A few years ago my aunt had a fully loaded 2011 Genesis with the 3.8. Black on black. What I remember most about it is how WHISPER quiet the interior was. The rear seats were very comfortable. Very good build quality and easily competes with a Lexus or Mercedes. Now she has a loaded 2015 which also has the 3.8. I thought it was peppy after driving it one time. My uncle (her husband) has a fully loaded 2013 Santa Fe Sport. They both love their Hyundais and haven't had any issues with them. This led me to buy my 2019 Tucson Se. Hyundai's are great cars and a great value when you buy them slightly used.

I have a used 2012 Hyundai i30 1.4 CRDi for over 4 years now, 180k km on the clock. I'm really impressed how great it holds up, changing nothing but some regular wearable items like brakes, windshield wipers and light bulbs (Of course, regular maintenance like oil, oil filter and air filter change). They are far from luxury cars, and I don't need luxury, I need utility, a dependabe tool. And I can tell you this brand has very dependable and even nice looking vehicles that also offer great value for your money. If you want luxury, I understand that, buy some german money pit and enjoy it, because that's what makes you happy. But If you want a day-to-day workhorse which will not break your bank account, I can honestly recommend Hyundai/KIA. They really did improve a lot from those old washing-machines that Scotty mentioned.

On that Hyundai Genesis I believe that is the 3.8 l v6. that particular engine used to be known for having issues with timing chain adjuster failures. if there's a little bit too much slop in the chain it could also cause a slight wiggle in the VVT system. You also might check to see if this may be simply normal for this engine perhaps this system is not as stable as others or operates on a different principle. Slight vibration at idle you could also check coils wires plugs and fuel injectors that tends to be aware those things show up the most.

What Scotty ALWAYS misses is how much Kia's and Hyundai's have been improving and continue to improve. That's the big difference. Other car companies are more or less static.
