@@BrumBrumBryn Pretty much. How many consumers look at the spec sheet, though? They just hear "up to 40gb/s" and think they could get that on anything with the label "Thunderbolt 3", which I think is a reasonable assumption for the usual consumer. Ngl, it's kind of bullshit that there is variation in a "standard". If the "standard" allows for transfer of up to 40Gbps, then all implementation should allow that. You can't have a "standard" of 40 Gbps, that might only deliver 16 Gbps.

I feel like that it was always the problem with thunderbolt 3. Did it have 4 PCIE lanes or just 2, did it support power delivery or not, is the chip controling it going to burn out after only 6 months(Lenovo). Glad to hear that all of this will be consistent, And be supported natively for Intel Chips making it easier to widespread adopt. Now we just need then on AMD machines.

The biggest thing about TB4 - it WORKS. No more guessing "does this port support XYZ?". Knowing that any TB4 connection will always work at 2m with a cheap passive cable, that it always supports at least 2x 4K monitors, that you can charge your laptop with it - that is really helpful. (and it is a superset of USB4 - got an USB4-device? You can connect it to TB4 and every single function will work) USB 3 over Type-C had soooo many optional features. One really great one would be ANALOG audio over USB-C. Yes - the same output you get from the good old headphone-jack. But of course that was optional. With that mobile phones could really argue that you do not need the jack anymore but of course - nope, didn't happen.

I've completely written off most of these connection standards at this point. Besides the ridiculous confusion behind modern-day USB and Thunderbolt, manufacturers are treating it like best case scenarios instead of guaranteed minimums. The fact that the Thunderbolt 4 standard specifies a difference between "speed" and "data transfer" is complete BS, and flies in the face of what a standard is supposed to signify and convey.

There is at least one X570 board with an Intel certified TB3 implementation: www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/X570%20Phantom%20Gaming-ITXTB3. AMD's Zen 2 CPUs technically meet all the requirements for Thunderbolt 4 as well, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see AMD's next motherboards support TB4 and USB4: www.pcworld.com/article/3564374/intel-unveils-the-thunderbolt-4-spec-which-amd-believes-it-can-use.html

Actually when a Thunderbolt cable has no number marking that means it only supports 20Gb/s, however this is generally only used with older TB monitor cables due to cable lengths needing to be longer while still following the laws of resistance. If the Cable has a 3 or 4 it supports the full 40Gb/s.

@@linkthehero1234 the thing is the K is just the horizontal size. See if you had two 4k monitors side by side, it would be 8k wide, but only 2160 tall. I mean Samsung make a 5120x1440 monitor which is literally the same pixels as 2 1440 monitors side by side, so its probably a matter of time before someone does ultra wide 8k.

Well USB4 incoporates all Thunderbolt 3 requirements while being backwards compatible to USB2.0 The only thing Thunderbolt 4 does is guaranteeing a certain amount of speed, which USB never did.

@32Zn
@32Zn 3 жыл бұрын
@DPatricia Latimore Johnson Thats the thing. Even you messed it up again. USB-C is the physical connector. The new M1 Machines have (arguably) USB4.0 support with the physical USB-C connector. And for the Thunderbolt cable: You need an actual Intel TB verification to put up the TB logo, so if it is a trusted cable producer, you will know that it actually has Thunderbolt. It's not Intels fault if consumer buy fake counterfeit products, because they are cheap (but also work bad)

What do you expect? At a certain point you can‘t just get higher data rates (physically speaking). Guaranteeing the said speed is a big difference and upgrade.
@UnrealOG137

@@32Zn I expect *something* to happen in 5 years. Any speed increase is meaningful. This is the longest time between major thunderbolt releases, and no max speed increase makes it kind of disappointing, imo. I'm glad that the requirements are more stringent now. Hopefully less playing the guess-which-manufacturer-implemented-thunderbolt-properly game.

@@32Zn it's 40 gigaBITS per second, not gigaBYTES. Speed also keeps increasing for several other port standards. Why can't usb type c do the same? The most logical explanation is that it's a physical limitation of the port.

Protip: if you have a thunderbolt4 port, it might SAY it's compatible with usb, but it's not if you plug a USB c (even gen 2x2+2-2_2) cable into it. You need an Intel certified cable, then your USB hub will work. I had all sorts of weird issues with my juiced hub since moving to a Mobo that was tb4 instead of usbc. Once I swapped cables all was right. Other than. Having to spend $60 on a new cable when the other one was just fine, or $300 on a tb4 hub since caldigit makes the only remotely useful hub ( I don't need an SD card reader and display port on my USB hub on desktop. I just dont. Stahp manufacturers..stahp)
