Jax has always been mean. It's just that people who were simping for Jax were so blinded by their infatuation for knock-off Bugs Bunny to notice GooseWork's warnings about Jax getting much worse as the series goes on and the very obvious negative characters traits he displayed in episode 1.

i don't understand why so many people are like "OMG JAX IS MEAN!?!?!" because he literally was that way in the pilot and i'm sure gooseworx has talked a lot about his attitude. i'm really sure this is his way of not abstracting because he has something to do other than worry about his life before being taken to the circus. didn't he just leave pomni and ragatha to deal with abstracted kaufmo??? don't get me wrong, i do think he cares about the circus members a bit but he just wants to make the best of his time while he's away from his former life

for those wondering, nothing changed about his character. this video is quite literally a yap-off. in the first THREE MINUTES of the video he's like "in the pilot jax seems indifferent and likes having fun at the expense of others" then he's like "but in this new episode it really shows how jax doesn't care" spent 8 minutes to say absolutely nothing 😭

What I think is that Jax secretly knows way more of how the circus works than the other characters. The reason why he is probably so chaotic is to distance himself from others so he doesn’t go crazy and abstract. That’s why is a bully to everyone. But people are mainly mad about him killing the candy town. So let’s focus on that. You can see Jax all throughout the episode just having fun and being openly happy and excited about violence. Well if you have noticed, he’s way more cruel to the npcs than the actual humans trapped there. This is because he knows they are just npcs and Caine would probably shut it down before the monster even got close to the town. But he is still quite violent with his fellow inmates. So why is that? Well, if you look in the two episodes we have right now, the only thing that seems to cause pain to a character is glitching out. So he only does these chaotic things mainly because he understands how the whole system here works and that it would only give the fellow humans a scare. This could also support the fact that he is just being rude with people because he wants to entertain himself and not abstract. Because when you abstract, you glitch out. He could also be rude because of a past of his or because he knows something the others don’t. In fact, the past theory is basically already proven to be fact. As you may have heard, Jax is canonically afraid of corn. The reasoning behind this is stated by the creator. She said “it’s because corn reminds him of the farm” then nothing else is stated. Gooseworx has also said that we will find more about his character someday. Meaning there’s a huge chance he is a brat for a big reason. Last thing, you also have to keep in mind how young Jax is. He’s the youngest of the members. And he states in the first episode: “We’ve been stuck here for years.” Implying that including everyone PLUS him has been stuck there for who knows how long. So he could have possibly even been a minor when he got stuck there. So he was mean to others as a coping mechanism. You would be bitter too if you were in his situation.

I totally agree with this theory! I've seen other theories about "Jay being an NPC and that may be the reason why he is like this". But when you think about it, it makes so much sence that he behaves that way because he doesn't want to go insane and doesn'twant to show his feelings. Jax is an overhated character in my opinion

I have a theory that we might meet kaufmo at some point because before episode two was released goosworks said on tumblr that episode 2 will focus on a character we haven't met yet and at the end of the episode we focused on kaufmo since the circus members held a funeral for him, but goosworks specifically said "yet" at the end. so we might get to see kaufmo.

TADC only has like 2 episodes, it sounds like Jax’s personality changed but this is literally just the beginning. We have a lot that we don’t know about the characters.

There is a theory telling that Jax could be an npc from a previous adventure. Like Gummigoo, he found a way back to the tent, with new reality knowledge. Like he could be a previous villain or obstacle the humans had to face. Then he befriended a human or get close to one. Caine then would erase this human by mistake and let Jax among with the other humans, unaware. That would explain jax behavior and mentality. He is "free" from his previous level/adventure and can do anything without consequences.

I feel like it would be really interesting if jax would loose up a bit to process his emotions and ironically that’s what makes him abstract

There's also the point to be made that this is the first time we see him on an actual mission playing the game. Before he was just hanging out with guys at the circus so he's just his normal mean self. But now on the mission he has an goal he wants to accomplish and he's not letting anybody stop him, plus the fact he knows nobody is actually in any real danger so he doesn't feel bad just throwing people out the truck.

I think it’s more over the fact he has more chances to actually act worse in episode two than episode one

1. No I think what we saw in episode 1 was just a taste of what's to come. I think the way Jax was acting in episode 2 is him showing his true colors. 2. I think him leaving before Kaufmo's funeral was more out of fear than sadness for Kaufmo because I think he's afraid that if he abstracted. No one would hold a funeral for him because he was being a jerk to everyone.

Jax reminds me of angel dust without the certain types of jokes which makes sense due to angel dust having the same voice actor in hazbin hotel pilot

at best, he felt different to me, but he was basically the same as the first episode... except maybe a bit more unhinged since he took the spotlight more compared to the first episode where he mostly just ran around and talked

my personal head cannon is that jax sees this world as a world with no consequences ( at least the worlds with npcs) kinda like a player in GTA 5, so in turn feel like he can do whatever he wants in those worlds, but just not with the real people since they can get abstracted, a real consequence for his actions also a lot of people forget jax in ep 1 said "lady's first, no wait why would i say that" then proceeds to push gangle to the ground, safe to say that he likes to bully gangle to some degree

One thing ive been wondering is if the characters are supposed to represent DnD archetypes. Like Ragatha is obviously the "lawful good" and Jax is obviously a murder hobo. Zoobel seems like that one person who never shows up to sessions. Caine is obviously the DM. It gets a little bit iffy from there but seems basically correct. What made me think this was how Jax was talking to Gangle "arent you supposed to be submissive and agreeable?" sort of like he was saying that Gangle wasnt acting "in character" by refusing to do what he wanted. They were probably just testing with the pilot episode, so they didn't know how mean they should make Jax.

Based off the NPC quote from Caine I believe someone is gonna be confused for an NPC. Now keep in mind it’s unconfirmed NPC’s die when Caine pops them, and it’s possible they just get put back into the dev rooms. I could see Jax being trapped as an NPC, completely aware, but unable to stay in the Circus. Eventually an exit is found, and Jax is made aware of this, but unable to access it thanks to it being in the Circus. Truly a fate worse than death as he’s stuck as a character in a game for whoever enters and while those people could leave whenever, he can’t.

Gooseworx confirmed that Jax has always been a rude and mean character given the first few episodes were already scripted aka his personality’s been in stone for a while. The pilot is a pilot. It gives you a surface level idea of the show and the characters. It’s a test episode to see if people will take to it or not. Episode 2 expands on that, which is what episodes do for characters. Expand on the story and characters.
