Haidt didn't really respond to the criticism of making a conclusion based on bad studies, but if he's trying to get organize studies to disprove his hypothesis, I'm less bothered by that. Edit to add: Also, good on you Reason. I, and many others, critiqued the last video you had of Aaron Brown criticizing Haidt's conclusions, and soon after, you arranged for both to be in the same room. Kudos to you on that, it's an integrity move.

Kinsey as an example of “good research” is ridiculous.

I'm glad Aaron got to speak to Jonanthan here. Love to hear discussions of experimentation and statistical analysis like these.

I always like Jonathan Haidt. He's got a good respect for data and how it's supposed to be used. I haven't read his new book yet but now I probably will.

Ikr? I thought he was going to explain how Kinsey's horrendous selection bias ruined his work, and Haidt was making a similar mistake.😳😬 Far from it! 😬🤦🏼‍♂️🙇🏼‍♂️ Gross.

Click bait-ish, but the discussion was good and not Haidt "bad" as the title could suggext. Reason you can do better.

Maybe they CAN do better, but I'm not sure they will. They're as guided by their own ideology as partisans on the left and right. When I first started identifying as a libertarian, I fell into the "We're the only ones thinking rationally" trap as well. Just because we exist outside of the ideologically left/right paradigm doesn't mean we're not prone to the same confirmation bias as everybody else. The title is designed to attract and enflame the attention of libertarians and/or those who agree with Haidt.

Jesus, it’s hard to take this guy’s criticism seriously considering how continuously impressed he is with himself. Those types of people will never think anyone’s research lives up to their standards… unless they’re dead. Dead folk are easier for egomaniacs to respect because they don’t pose much of a threat.

Was the a panel discussion or an interview with the author. If it is a panel discussion then the critic makes a fair point and Jonathan Haidt should have been more forceful in defending his policy advice. I think the balance was about right if this was a discussion about the book.

The questioner is actually a ReasonTV contributer. He has done a few videos criticizing bad interpretations of statistics and studies. He even did a video not that long ago on this very topic. That's probably why they had him speak here.

Is it social media causing mental health decline or are doctors over diagnosing/prescribing meds? I like Haidt but troubleshooting issues isn't the way to govern. It is his ideal of troubleshooting issues that has taken decades to get things done. As a society we need to know what the issue is before we can address it and this troubleshooting approach only leads to delayed resolution. It is delayed because the powers that be continue to make small changes hoping that change solves the issue, that always leads to even more changes in hopes to solve the issue that isn't getting solved at all. We need to know what the issue is and put in place a solution that addresses the issue, we need to stop with this piecemeal troubleshooting. Edit: Added comment
