I was born and raised in the Church and attribute all the good things in my life to God. This past calendar year i have has a crisis of faith feeling betrayed by facts that the Church doesn't openly discuss. That being said I am keeping my heart open to the truth and possibility of the church being true. I feel in my heart that it is true

Wake up. Its a provable lie. Joseph Smith was a 19th century con man who became a cult leader. He got very rich and banged many women. From young teenagers up. Other mens wives, sister pairs, mother daughter pairs, etc. LDS Corp would be a top 100 business. Worth a few hundred billion Easily. Not even sure if that includes the land and temples. Only a couple to a few million active members worldwide.

@@MegaJohn144 please do this with every single thing you rely upon. Oh wait, that’s impossible. You have to rely on faith and trust in order to act in the world because you simply cannot know every thing a scrutinize everything. This is like saying you can’t listen to your doctors prescription/orders without doing all the studies yourself and reading all of the academic work that backs up those studies. Or that you cannot use medicine until you go to the plant and see how it’s made. Or that you can’t trust google maps because you haven’t seen the technology behind it and talked to the people creating it. And yes, there are good reasons for him not to be lying: 1 - his livelihood depends on being accurate and non-deceptive. If another researcher found out he was lying, he would no longer be credible and lose his job and/or degree. 2 - He has been consistent in previous work. Past behavior is the strongest predictor of future behavior 3 - He cites his sources. You can go look at it for yourself. If you’re lying but you give sources that don’t back up your claim, you’re stupid. 4 - he left the Church before. Why would he come back just to make up false stories?

So are you implying that Joseph Smith felt he was commanded to begin polygamy, and felt uncomfortable with it so he thought he found a loophole to where he could practice it without actually practicing it by marrying pregnant women?
@andrewdurfee3896
@andrewdurfee3896 10 ай бұрын
I come to that same conclusion. Under levitical law if a wife’s husband passed away without bearing children then one of the brothers would have to raise up seed on his behalf. In this case Joseph got sealed to married women so that he could have their husbands raise up seed unto the lord. Joseph could be sealed to them, but not have to have any sexual intercorse with them. This would be the conclusion that we get from the data. He was later commanded to fully implement polygamy and not half heartedly. The early sealings we’re eternity only sealings. Later he would have sealings for time and eternity. In the temple lot case it is these women under this latter category that would testify of having sexual relations with Joseph Smith. From this we gather that Joseph was reluctant to fully implement plural marriage as taught in doctrine and covenants 132.

 @kuriju88 Oh, it appears you removed the comment that removed a whole thread of conversation, so I don't know if you saw my response to your latest. You had said you really wanted to talk with me but I'm just trying to talk with others. Perhaps we're misunderstanding each other? I've been reaching out to people here expressing that they're wrestling with their faith and want help. Rightly or wrongly, that's not at all the vibe I've gotten from you. In my *perception* it has appeared that you are actively attempting to destroy the faith of others, take potshots at me and what I say, and insist that scholarly questions about history need to be settled to your satisfaction in the comments on a KZfaq video--none of which interests me enough to want to continue. So, instead of just blocking you, I decided to try to better understand your intentions. The medium of words on a screen carries no nonverbals, and therefore I may be absolutely wrong in my perception. If so, I deeply apologize. I'd be very interested in understanding how you---like I have done in my own personal past---became disaffected from the church, and where you're coming from now.

Hi Don, I didnt remove anything. I dont see myself or comments ive made as criticizing or insulting people I see myself speaking directly to the ideas and facts and I am of the mindset that all ideas can and should be pushed against including my own. But maybe as you pointed out, Im lacking awareness in that area? To my knowledge ive never made any personal statement against anyone including you. So i apologize if those were taken that way. I just honestly believe the data supports Joseph Smith was trying to be like the ancient patriarchs, Abraham, Solomon etc and that he wanted to have as many women as he could. It was like property. And in his implementation he used the same tactics that abusers used. I think the truth matters. Should I spend my time in more productive ways? Yes absolutely.
@onandagus1
@onandagus1 10 ай бұрын
@@kuriju88 I appreciate you taking the time to explain that. And I apologize if I misunderstood your intent. Given the language of giving and taking in D&C 132, and other text, I can see sources of concern for people being perceived as property. And I certainly don't think that early polygamy was above ethical critique. From my vantage point as a historian, the best basis for us to make an ethical assessment of early Latter-day Saint polygamy is, first, to ensure that we have the most accurate picture of what actually happened. That is my primary goal in my research. So, even though I have been featured in a number of videos- which are obviously totally fair game for anyone's critique - I would rather be doing research and writing on these topics offline with the aim of getting them published and therefore made part of a larger scholarly conversation , rather than imagining that they can be settled here. I initially started looking at the comments on my recent videos first out of curiosity what people made of them, and also figuring I could give the algorithm of boost, and hopefully help out when people had faith questions they were wrestling with. But my tendency is to let myself get sucked into unproductive discussion more than I think I should. So I'm trying to pull back from doing that. In any case, I have no hard feelings toward you, and hope the same is true on your end, as it sounds like it is. I will be doing quite a bit of publishing on Joseph Smith and polygamy in the next couple years. I already have two papers on Joseph Smith and Fanny Alger submitted for publication and have two more papers on Joseph Smith's polygamy in the works. So, I'll provide quite a bit of fodder for critique or engagement in whatever way you choose. Regards

Why Do LDS Reject GOD of BIBLE & believe in FALSE GOD of Joseph Smith? Isn't your eternity worth examining the truth? NO truth: Book of Abraham published with 3 facsimiles taken from an ancient papyrus, shown to be a fraud years later. The book is a funerary papyrus showing scenes from the Egyptian Book of the Dead. In Facsimiles Nos. 1 & 3, Smith misidentifies everything depicted. "LDS and non-LDS Egyptologists agree that the characters on the fragments do not match the translation given in the book of Abraham" Quote from LDS OFFICIAL WEB PAGE NO trace of the “Two million Jaredites slain” (Ether 15:2), with iron, brass, breast-plates, shields, and armor. This is 3 times the # of Americans killed in the entire Civil War & Revolutionary War combined. NO trace of the great city Zarahemla- it would be impossible for a city the size of Zarahemla (Alma 5:2; D&C 125:3) to leave no trace NO trace of Jewish dna found in any Indian burial ground anywhere in the Americas from time period of BOM. Thomas W. Murphy, (Mormon scholar, DNA researcher):“We are in a dilemma, the genetic evidence shows that American Indians are not Hebrews, they are not Israelites. The Book of Mormon is not true.” John Whitmer Historical Association Journal 2005 NO temple like Solomon's described in 2 Nephi 5:16 has ever been found yet biblical temple remains in Jerusalem NO Nephite "reformed Egyptian" writings ever found anywhere as it is not a language found in the world NO cities mentioned in the BOM have ever been located (none of 38) anywhere NO evidence: "The whole land was covered with buildings, and the people were as numerous, as it were the sand of the sea." Yet not one ever located. (Mormon 1:7) IMPOSSIBLE for highly advanced civilizations (Jaredites, Nephites) & MILLIONS of people to have vanished The BOM speaks of sheep, swine, silk, wool clothing & elephants existing in the Americas when they did not. 1 Ne.13:7; Alma 4:6; Ether 9:17 and 10:24 These were brought to America centuries later by Europeans. NO wheat, no goats, no steel found in the Americas, no metal smelting furnaces, no metal armor, no steel swords, no cattle, no chariot parts, no brass (Mosiah 8:10) no evidence of the listed Kings in BOM, no Jewish relics or Jewish Temples from supposed Jews, no metal plates like Nephites supposedly used, no middle eastern seeds growing, "which were brought from the land of Jerusalem ... and grew exceedingly" 1 Nephi 18:24 There is NO archaeological, anthropological, topological, linguistic, botanical or dna evidence to support the Book of Mormon. LDS anthropologist Dee Green: “The first myth we need to eliminate is that BOM archaeology exists” conceding 20 years of research “left us empty-handed” (Green 1969 p. 77) CAN WE TRUST OUR HEARTS AS TO THE TRUTH OF THE BOOK OF MORMON since there is no evidence? D&C Section 9:8-9 - tell us that if something is true it will make our "bosom burn" and we will FEEL that it is right. This is NOT how the bible tells us to determine truth. Acts 17:11 "they... EXAMINED THE SCRIPTURES EVERY DAY to see if what Paul said was TRUE"; "TEST THEM ALL" 1 Thes 5:21 The best way to spot false teachers is to examine the TRUTH of the bible. 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV "STUDY to show thyself approved unto God, ... rightly dividing the word of TRUTH." 1 John 4:1 says: "BELIEVE NOT EVERY SPIRIT, but try the spirits whether they are of God; because MANY FALSE PROPHETS are gone out into the world." Maroni 10:4 says: "he will manifest the truth of it unto you" But: THE BIBLE WARNS YOU about trusting your own heart. Jeremiah 17:9 "the heart is DECEITFUL above all things". Proverbs 28:26 "He that trusts in his own heart is a FOOL." "The sum of your word is TRUTH" Psalm 119:160 Faith in a false God is of what value? Faith in the true God is invaluable. Mormonism is based on a PROVABLY FALSE claim the Bible was corrupted and "plain and precious parts" were removed by Christian translators after the apostles died. Yet, there isn’t ANY specific biblical scripture found ANYWHERE, EVER, that directly supports Joseph Smith’s translation of the Bible. AN OBJECTIVE TEST OF THE BIBLE AND THE BOOK OF MORMON: The Claim: In the BOM, the prophet Nephi has a vision the Bible was corrupted after the 12 apostles and after the formation of the “great and abominable church” (1 Nephi 13:26-29). Most Mormons believe this is the Catholic Church formed in the 4th century. Nephi claims this church was founded by the Devil (1 Nephi 14:3). So let’s objectively examine both the Bible & BOM to be fair and test for errors. BIBLE: The Dead Sea Scrolls have been dated to as early as 350 BC. One is the Great Isaiah Scroll, which is the oldest known copy of the Book of Isaiah dated to 180 BC. Do ANY ancient scrolls show Smith's "uncorrupted" version of scripture? NO! Yet they would if the scripture was later corrupted after the 12 apostles died as Smith said. Also, if they had been corrupted, Jesus would have corrected scripture instead of affirming it! Jesus sd:“ I told you EVERYTHING written about me in the Law of Moses, the Books of the Prophets, and in the Psalms had to happen.” (Luke 24:44-46) Scripture is the same today as it was 2,100+ years ago with only minor spelling or punctuation differences. Joseph Smith was wrong. These scrolls pre-dated Catholics, and are Jewish scrolls and the BOM says the Jews had the Scriptures in their "purity". 1Nephi 13:25 LDS Apologist Wayne Ham admitted the Isaiah scroll does not support the the BOM. Apologist Dr. Sidney B. Sperry, of BYU, said the Dead Sea Scrolls do not help the case for the BOM. BYU Professor Joseph F. McConkie: "Rather than Joseph Smith as Found in Ancient Manuscripts, it ought be Joseph Smith as Lost in Ancient Manuscripts.” (Religious Studies Center, 1984) IS THE GOD OF THE BOOK OF MORMON THE SAME ONE AS IN THE BIBLE? NO! "Before me NO god was formed, nor shall there be ANY after me.” (Isaiah 43:10) If Mormonism is true, then God could not make this claim, for he was just a man at one point; nor could he claim that no gods would come after him, for that is the goal of LDS members. Like Joseph Smith this was the goal of Satan, to be like God and have worshippers. "I will exalt my throne above the stars of God ... I will be like the Most High”’ (Isaiah 14:12-14) The new testament has not been corrupted either. See John 1:1 Smith changed it to make Jesus a created being. Research a 1900 year old papyri known as the Bodmer Papyri of the book of John. (written 150 AD, not long after the apostle John died) John 1:1 "In the BEGINNING was the WORD and the WORD was WITH God and the WORD WAS God." ΕΝ ΑΡΧΗ ΗΝ Ο ΛΟΓΟΣ ΚΑΙ Ο ΛΟΓΟΣ ΗΝ ΠΡΟΣ ΤΟΝ ΘΕΟΝ ΚΑΙ ΘΕΟΣ ΗΝ Ο ΛΟΓΟΣ (look up this ancient Greek yourself on google) John 1:1 Joseph Smith translation: "In the beginning was the gospel preached through the Son. And the gospel was the word, and the word was with the Son, and the Son was with God, and the Son was of God." Smith's Jesus is no longer God in the flesh but the biblical Jesus is: "God was manifest in the flesh" 1Tim. 3:16 KJV There are 4,000 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. Some go back to 350 AD and NONE support Joseph Smith's claims that the bible of today has been corrupted. Papyrus fragments exist of the New Testament dated to 175 AD and show that the new testament has NOT been "corrupted". (New Testament Docs: Are They Reliable? Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1967 pp. 15-17) In the LDS Church’s 147th Conf., Gen Authority Bernard P. Brockbank said: the Christ followed by Mormons is NOT THE CHRIST followed by traditional Christianity. (Ensign, May 1977 p. 26) The manuscript and archeological evidence for the BIBLE is the GREATEST in antiquity. I pray you know the true Jesus and not Joseph Smith's version. Galatians 1:8 "Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach ANY OTHER GOSPEL to you than that which we have preached to you, let him be ACCURSED." Matthew 24:24 warns Satan WILL send FALSE prophets and pose as an ANGEL of light! 2 Corinthians 11:14 God is much greater than the humanoid of Mormonism and NOT just ONE OF AN ENDLESS NUMBER OF GODS. Jesus said ALL scripture will NOT fade away but "many wolves in sheep's clothing" will come trying to ADD to the word. Mathew 7:15 Joseph Smith changed Jesus, the Father and ADDED you can become a GOD. It hurts my heart to see Mormons fall for the lie that we can become God when there is only one eternal God found in the bible. "The only men who become Gods, even the sons of Gods are those that enter into polygamy." (Brigham Young) Journal of Discourses 11 p.269 Apostle Orson Pratt, in The Seer, page 172, “the great Messiah who was the founder of the Christian religion was a Polygamist…the Messiah chose to take upon himself his seed; and by marrying many wives, … The son followed the example of his Father" God gave us critical thinking & logical reasoning for a reason, which is why he tells us to EXAMINE and TEST what we are being taught for TRUTH. The bible withstands the truth test. Joseph Smith's version fails the truth test. It's your eternity, study it for yourself. God bless.

Since the vast majority of Joseph Smith's plural unions do not follow the characteristics of a marriage (those women did not leave their homes to go live with Joseph, there were no mutual responsibilities, Joseph did not have to provide for them, they did not even have children together). Not to be rude, but this seems to skirt the issue that many of Joseph's plural wives testified that they had sexual relationships or others close to them affirmed those relations (Emily & Eliza Partirdge, Lucy Walker, Melissa Lott, Luisa Beaman, Almera Johnson, Maria & Sarah Lawrence). One even called her daughter Josephine (Lyon) because she believed that Joseph was her father (he was not, but she believed he was). Very few people believe the father of their children was someone they did not have sex with. The idea that Joseph Smith's polyandry was different than ALL the other early church partitioners, and he was the only one that did not have sex with the women he married is wishful thinking. I think his point was how polygamy began for Joseph and how its origins were not about sex. I do not think he is claiming that Joseph did not later have sexual relations with his later polygamous wives.

@jahadden1 Jim's explanation below is correct. If you watch that part again, you'll find that I'm addressing the question of what Joseph Smith's motive was in *initiating* Nauvoo polygamy. He begins polygamy with pretty clearly non-sexual motives. He later has sexual relationships with some women he married.

Galatians 1 8 9? Paul now curses anyone who would teach a version of the gospel of Jesus other than the one they heard from him. He writes that this includes himself or even an angel from heaven. If "the gospel" is modified, adjusted, or changed by anyone for any reason, it is no longer the gospel. It is not the truth. Context Summary

@kuriju88 Joseph and Hyrum called polygamy a corrupt and false doctrine. What say ye to that? Hyrum said "God has not command anyone to have more wives" The Lord said through Joseph Ye shall cleave unto ONE wife and NONE else. Joseph also said "he forbids the practice. [polygamy] Joseph also said "no man shall have but ONE wife" He also said "let polygamy, bigamy, and fornication to be frowned out of the hearts of honest men to drop in the gulf of fallen nature where the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched"

@@didjosephsmithpracticepolygamy Yep. John Taylor and Wilford Woodruff also signed documents and issued statements saying they didn't have extra wives when at the time they did. What do you make of those? These things were illegal. No one was trying to go to jail. The evidence that Joseph practiced polygamy is overwhelming. Do you think all of the women involved were making it up?

@kuriju88 Joseph said in defense of those accusations of polygamy, "I have rattled chains before in a dungeons for the truth's sake. I am innocent of all these charges, and you can bear witness of my innocence..." I think there could be multiple explanations for the women's affidavits. The fact remains that there is not a single contemporary source from any of those women or their families or their neighbors or friends, not one journal entry or anything. That is far more telling than having multiple women who are married to the hierarchy and believe that polygamy is needed for salvation and the leaders are prophets. All this 40+ years later and suspiciously around the same time. That and we know the history was altered from anti-polygamy statements to pro-polygamy. Etc... It's hard to explain everything in a single comment, but I can confidently say that I don't believe Joseph practiced polygamy.

When is the “knowing brother Brigham” episode when they explore Brighams adultery and backstabbing murder? They know Brigham a helluva lot better. Should do him. He is the founder of their beloved one-true-church after all. It’s a joke these people think they know Joseph’s heart any better than those present when Joseph literally told them they didn’t know his heart. Or any better than any of the other 200+ factions using Joseph’s name to justify their bullshit. It’s also a disgrace this dude brings Emma up. He knows her just as little. She denied Joseph practicing polygamy her entire life. But he conveniently ignores that. This dude pretends to be objective and all knowing, but has a forked tongue. Should go back to going down on Rusty Nelson and co. and keep Joseph’s name out of his mouth. He only pretends to speak good of Joseph but is motivated only by evil, caring nothing for the truth. Joseph was being sincere when he publicly and relentlessly condemned polygamy. Try talking about that through your sheep’s clothing! It is people like this who Joseph saw in his last vision who would draw weapons on him and betray him in his own barn.

While most of the revelations Joseph Smith received gave instructions, counsel, and doctrinal teachings or recovered sacred stories from the ancient past, a few contained historically specific prophecies about impending events.1 Those that did usually focused on global events leading up to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ or on specific endeavors in which the Saints were commanded to participate. One of Joseph Smith’s most well-known millennial prophecies related to the American Civil War. On December 25, 1832, Joseph Smith received a revelation prophesying that a war between the northern and southern U.S. states would begin in South Carolina and that wars and uprisings throughout the earth would finally result in the “end of all Nations” at the time of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. At the time the revelation was received, South Carolina and the federal government of the United States were involved in a dispute, but it was peacefully resolved the next March. Years later, Joseph reiterated his prophecy that war would break out in South Carolina over slavery debates, as it did nearly 20 years after Joseph Smith’s death.2 Joseph Smith also prophesied frequently concerning the future destiny of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its role in the last days. Perhaps the most beloved of these prophecies was contained in an 1842 letter addressed to Chicago newspaper editor John Wentworth. “No unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing,” Joseph affirmed, despite the adversity the young Church had already faced. “Persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.”3 Many of Joseph Smith’s prophecies were visionary statements about the Lord’s will for the Church, which the Saints understood as being predicated on their faith and on human agency.4 Many of these prophecies were fulfilled as the Saints moved ahead in faith to carry them out. In other instances, the Saints struggled to make sense of the difficulties they encountered as they pursued inspired objectives. For example, the Latter-day Saints’ earliest understandings of the prophecies concerning a future Zion focused on building a city in Jackson County, Missouri. After they were driven from the land, additional revelation helped them understand their experience and find new ways to channel their energy toward completing the Lord’s work. It also reassured them that when “their enemies come upon them, and hinder them from performing that work,” the Lord would “require that work no more” and “accept of their offering.”5 Although the loss of the land of Zion tried their faith, Church members continued to work to build up Zion in other places and ways.6 The Saints in Kirtland experienced a trial of faith connected with another of Joseph Smith’s prophetic statements. In late 1836 through the spring of 1837, Joseph Smith told the Saints that Kirtland would prosper economically if they would keep the commandments and support a new local financial institution called the Kirtland Safety Society.7 When the bank collapsed, some Saints treated Joseph Smith’s language as failed prophecy. Others looked for God’s blessings even in their economic trials.8 Oliver Granger, who accepted an assignment to handle Church-related debts in the wake of the larger economic collapse, was later reassured by the Lord that “his sacrifice shall be more sacred unto me, than his increase.”9 Some of the most stirring stories from Church history recount the efforts of Saints who exercised faith in Joseph Smith’s revealed pronouncements and worked to bring them about. On April 26, 1838, Joseph Smith received a revelation that instructed the Twelve Apostles to depart from Far West for a mission to England in one year’s time. When the Saints were driven out of Missouri that fall, some called it a false prophecy. Despite facing potential violence or imprisonment in returning to Missouri, Brigham Young was determined to act in accordance with the prophecy. He led the Twelve in a clandestine trip back to Far West, Missouri, and under cover of darkness on April 26, 1839, they departed symbolically on their mission in fulfillment of the commandment.10 Joseph Smith insisted on the freedom to state his own opinions. When someone told him they thought a prophet always speaks as a prophet, Joseph countered that “a Prophet was a Prophet only when he was acting as such.”11 At the same time, he did not shy away from speaking boldly when the Lord gave him revealed instructions, and he stood by his prophetic pronouncements. The gift of prophecy was an important aspect of Joseph Smith’s calling and legacy.

@@carolynschuster291 Satan, also called the adversary or the devil, is the enemy of all righteousness and of those who seek to follow God. He is a spirit son of God who was once an angel “in authority in the presence of God” (Doctrine and Covenants 76:25; see also Isaiah 14:12; Doctrine and Covenants 76:26-27). But in the premortal Council in Heaven, Lucifer, as Satan was then called, rebelled against God. Since that time, he has sought to destroy the children of God on the earth and to make them miserable. One primary issue in the conflict between God and Satan is agency. Agency is a precious gift from God; it is essential to His plan for His children. In Satan’s rebellion against God, Satan “sought to destroy the agency of man” (Moses 4:3). He said: “I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor” (Moses 4:1). Satan persuaded “a third part of the hosts of heaven” to turn away from the Father (Doctrine and Covenants 29:36). As a result of this rebellion, Satan and his followers were cut off from God’s presence and denied the blessing of receiving a physical body (see Revelation 12:9). Heavenly Father allows Satan and Satan’s followers to tempt us as part of our experience in mortality (see 2 Nephi 2:11-14; Doctrine and Covenants 29:39). Because Satan “seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself” (2 Nephi 2:27), he and his followers try to lead us away from righteousness. He directs his most strenuous opposition at the most important aspects of Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness. For example, he seeks to discredit the Savior and the priesthood, to cast doubt on the power of the Atonement, to counterfeit revelation, to distract us from the truth, and to contradict individual accountability. He attempts to undermine the family by confusing gender, promoting sexual relations outside of marriage, ridiculing marriage, and discouraging childbearing by married adults who would otherwise raise children in righteousness. Individuals do not have to give in to Satan’s temptations. Each person has the power to choose good over evil, and the Lord has promised to help all who seek Him through sincere prayer and faithfulness.
