Don Bradley, one of the most fascinating guests we've had on our show, talked to us about his conversion and WOW. It's rather unbelievable. Don was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church) and had always been intrigued by the doctrine and history of the LDS Church. However, with further research, Don began to experience doubt. He put his doubts on a shelf and served a mission in Houston, Texas. But when he returned home, the doubts continued to set in. Don soon fell away from the Church and asked to have his records removed. However, after many years, a few surprising events led him to reconsider the Church of Jesus Christ. Watch his story!! And let us know what you learned in the comments below!

This was awesome. I think he explained it really well. I'm a convert of a couple of years now. I actually was introduced to Lds on the net. Specifically through anti sites. But I realised after about year that there was alternative stuff to do with the anti stuff. I havnt dug nearly as much as this guy, and not 10,000 hours. Lol. But I have dug enough to become converted. Especially once I started reading the Book of mormon and having the missionaries visit and discovering for myself relationship with our Father and Jesus Christ. I'm so grateful for the Gospel in my life. It has completely changed my life. I've watched saints unscripted even ages ago when it was 3 Mormons. You guys are great.

First of all, VERY IMPRESSIVE no-hands chiropractic neck adjustment at 21:51. Seriously, this was a profound interview. I cam across it bc I’m currently reading, and loving, his book on the 116 pages. Luckily, I’ve never fallen away. I’m a convert (age 18), and had a very strong spiritual conversion, followed by mission to Italy. When I’ve encountered evidences that seemed to almost contradict the overly-simplistic official church narrative of the history of the the restoration, I’ve been blessed to be spiritually guided to dig a bit deeper, and find answers. Often, that deeper dive gives me more depth of understanding. Bradley offers a perfect example in his book, although he doesn’t frame it as an answer to critics of Joseph Smith: One if many criticisms of JS is that he “hid” the plates in a pillowcase. Such critics suggest Smith did so to hide the supposed fact that he had no plates. But Bradley demonstrates 1) that the box in which the plates and other paraphernalia (e.g., the sword, the Urim & Thummim, etc.) constituted a sealed ark, and 2) going back to Old Testament times, such contents, when not in the temple, HAD to be veiled (Numbers 4), and shown only to authorized viewers. So this would be a perfect example of finding out something was perhaps not as depicted in Sunday School lessons, but upon further investigation, actually furthering our understanding of Smith’s prophetic calling.

People like Don are uniquely positioned to speak to those folks with empathy and understanding, which is something that's hard to do when you haven't walked in some else's shoes. Austin Chubak I was thinking the same thing. I fell away from the church and then Christ shortly after. I became an atheist and would get so angry at how sickly happy and successful everyone was as my life became stagnant. I understand where he comes from because when I began making changes to become happy again I started thinking about the existence of God. When I started in school and started learning about evolution and how it wasn’t like what everyone around me was saying. I learned that with everything we have learned about how the beginning of life developed, no one has been able to figure out how it actually started. So I decided to kneel down one day and see if I felt God. At first I felt weird but when I started talking to Him without the idea of this is dumb but please show me if you are here. I allowed myself to feel Him and it was something I honestly wouldn’t change anything for. I needed to fall away from Him to appreciate His presence. Since then, I have had a passion to share the joy He showed me with all those Christ is still fight for to bring back home. Don’t feel rushed, everything takes time and He is happy to wait as long as possible as long as you come back to Him.

Hearing him speak is incredible. It's not that I want to knock people who have been faithful their role life. But his experience is similarly to one that so many of us have had. We go through doubt and there are things that are extremely hard to reconcile with. But then there are things that keep sticking out in our mind like, well wait, how did this book come about. There's no way a 23 year old country boy could write this. It's way way too sophisticated.

This is just the most amazing thing I've ever heard in terms of rekindling faith!! I didn't ever connect the skepticism and loss of testimony we see with the unhappiness that currently exists in the world. If unhappiness can create this loss of faith, (men's hearts are failing them), then the return of happiness, (maybe the coming of our Savior), can enliven the human spirit of faith and all our departed brothers and sisters will come back to us. I can't think of anything better. I can't hold back my tears when I think of this.

Terrific interview! I haven't done near the level of research Don has done, of course: I'm a pretty ordinary Latter-day Saint. But I have studied quite a bit more than some, (maybe 6000 or 7000 hours) and haven't run into anything that I couldn't put into context. That doesn't mean I don't sometimes find myself wondering if I am creating things out of my own psyche, and doubting. But like Don, I find that my life is happier than it would be if not for my faith and activities as a practicing Latter-day Saint. That gives me the willingness to keep acting in faith each day. Thanks, Don! (Yeah, quantum physics really strengthened my willingness to believe--the realities matched what I understood about God and the nature of the universe via Joseph Smith's descriptions.)

This is so true in how members see the church versus those who are trying to destroy and the faith of a belief system. I have spent many years in discussions with ex Mormons. I came to the conclusions that part of not all for them losing faith is because of their teachings had been a more utopian teaching about the church and it’s history. Then when they discover that Joseph Smith wasn’t perfect or even close to being perfect that starts them on the road of doubt.

wow, that is kind of interessting because I kind of t recognize my own process in his words - I am just lacking the last step.^^ at first got an atheist drift due to church history und methodical problems. Than my faith in a central designer was strengthened by cosmology / astrophysical science about the beginning of the universe. and when he mentioned that we might not understand the thinking of god by comparing it to our lack of being capable to understand quantum mechanics, he turned to my favorite historian.^^ Also I loved how he talked about the importance of gratitude and how it makes you happy. that is something I try to focus on a lot. I think it is hard to find historians who are not biased in one or the other direction. but this guy gives me hope to solve my problems with the church and help me find peace with it.

Faith begins with gratitude. Happiness is the eigenblessing of gratitude. And I can attest to the power of a gratitude journal. For me it started as a "charity log" wherein I kept an account of my successes, and failures, to follow charitable impulses. Did that for a while, then the Spirit of the Lord suggested to me that if I wanted to see the "big miracle" I needed to recognize the little daily miracles in my life, so I started including that in each entry. It worked. I was happier. I learned how to be more loving. And yes, the big miracle took place.

Mormon Stories with Robert Ritner, 1339, 1340, 1341 where he tears apart the BoA and what the Papyri actually say. How does Don get past this? Also, in 1340 Ritner directly challenges Gee to a debate, a call that has gone unanswered. Is there an explanation that doesn’t sound like mind-bending apologetics?
@beefmaster4
@beefmaster4 Жыл бұрын
I am looking at the sources you state (some pretty long videos), but just on the point of what is on the papyri and what is in the book of abraham- there are several theories that aren't mind-bending, but rather just trying to put yourself in someone else's shoes, which is necessary. Also, it is interesting to look into what has been discovered with practices of Abraham stories and Egyptian stories and how they were mixed. A jumping off point could be checking out LDS Truth Claims on youtube and look at the book of abraham episodes where he gives sources and points that you can look further into if curious. He does use the sources about the facsimiles that Ritner disagrees with, but I have yet to hear Ritner go over what is actually in the book of abraham other than just side remarks, he only addresses the pictures. And much of what Ritner states you can find other explanations for fairly easily, I imagine Don could as well. One thing Ritner brings up is how he had a big realization in finding the characters on the scrolls next to the english text- first off this has been pointed out long before Ritner as I easily found a paper on it so I don't think Ritner did too thorough of research on this particular topic, but he also is adamant that since the characters are on the left it must have been used for translation although it really appears as though the characters were squeezed in the margins after the english was written, also these characters don't match with what was described as the scroll that contained the book of abraham so it doesn't line up that necessarily Joseph printed a character and then wrote what that character meant. There are a lot of things brought up in these videos that don't really cover the opposing side very thoroughly. This mentions several of them: www.jefflindsay.com/LDSFAQ/FQ_Abraham.shtml. So, I think Don could easily find answers that I would not call mind-bending but rather being realistic in acknowledging that different people in different time periods have different perspectives.

I think the hardest part of the Book of Mormon to me was finding out that the witnesses never actually saw the plates. But only had seen them in vision with “spiritual eyes”. It kinda felt like I had been lied to and it felt like I had then spread that to people I loved a lot while a missionary.

That is complete nonsense. There are so many irrefutable statements from the three witnesses, eight witnesses and the seven unofficial witnesses that to claim that there were no plates is ridiculous. Start with reading Richard Lloyd Anderson‘s book, the book of Mormon witnesses. Statements from the witnesses are bullet proof. We have witness of the three who saw the angel, the artifacts, and heard the voice of God and we have the more natural witness of the eight who only handled the plates without such supernatural witness. These witnesses together make the job of the skeptic near impossible. Yes, there were plates obviously. the work of the skeptic is to only expose a grand conspiracy. This is ridiculous to conceive of and impossible for me to believe the more I understand church history.

Majestic Liberator of the Oppressed I believe I remember that an LDS interviewer, Henry Moyle, left David Whitmer disappointed, because his account was “more spiritual” then he had been earlier led to believe.

The spiritual eyes theory has long been debunked. Aside from the 11 witnesses there was another one, I believe Whitmer’s mother, who also beheld them. None of this would be possible for ANY of us if we weren’t searching for spiritual nourishment using anything but our “spiritual eyes”.
