The good and the not-good of this ambitious, raw album. A family-affair video about the album and its burning family house imagery. Plus lots of talk about Roland Barthes.

DS2 is a very artistic take on modern trap music and still doesn’t sound dated at all after almost 8 years. From what I see it’s considered his magnum opus. I’m not a huge Future fan or anything but I enjoyed Monster too
@yaad2545
@yaad2545 11 ай бұрын
Nothing about ds2 is ‘artistic’. It’s a tape full of really good trap songs. That’s it. A better example of an ‘artistic’ trap album would be Rodeo. Now I wouldn’t consider travis to be a trap artist, nor is rodeo a trap album. But the sound is definitely trap, but taken to a higher level when it comes to song progression and structuring
@BREATHER_
@BREATHER_ 6 ай бұрын
@@yaad2545 So you don’t think there is anything at all artistic about the sound of DS2 is compared to his other work? Idk, I hear a huge difference in quality and intent on it. And Rodeo is most definitely a trap album, personally my favorite “trap” album of all time. The way he fused other genres, styles of hip hop and psychedelia into the trap sound is what makes it so unique and groundbreaking

Regarding Security -- if you follow the Watching the Throne guys' analysis at all, their big thesis about kanye is that all of his late-era albums are sequenced like movies, where the individual songs are scenes within the movie, and the ideas and emotions he is expressing within those songs are the characters. Which is why, for example, you have a song like Yikes that dramatizes his descent into mania, before regrouping and finding himself toward the end of the album. Basically all of his albums since MBDTF have been his exploration of these darker moments leading up to some type of journey where he finds some sort of resolution by the end My guess is that Security plays into that. It may or may not be a true expression of his feelings right now about having to visit his kids. Rather, once the rest of the album is released it might become more clear that he's arrived at a more well adjusted place about his divorce, and 'Security' is just a dramatization of an episode leading up to him arriving there. Of course, it seems that your point is that Kanye should not ever express any negative emotions about his divorce in the same sentence as his kids for any reason. That's fair, but I'm not sure if it's an artistic criticism. More of a commentary on the negative repercussions of honest art.

Well said. I came her to ‘defend’ security as well. I think it’s important in the context of the album. The album being; a piece of narrative deciphered through its dynamic positions. Happy is a wonderful track. However, it’s only a slice of the spectrum, a sliver of the story. Security and Flowers give flavor and contrast to Donda 2, both as a subjective art project and as an autobiographic. Maybe it is incorrect to release, but at what cost does (arguably) the greatest artist of our generation sacrifice the integrity and impact of their work?
@juju-vl7oj

Yea , the "bad" side of Kanye is a pay off in the narrative. Sometimes you need to see the dark twisted side for the beautiful or fantasy part to feel more rewarding. And also in art, I don't want any artist to hold back on how they actually feel in the moment. I don't judge art on whether or not I feel what the artist feels is right or wrong for their personal life. The point is to express yourself.

Kanye as an artist has almost never depicted himself doing what’s the right thing. That’s why people listen to his music, because he’s relentlessly human and his flaws make his music more relatable

A part that made me start tearing up from True Love is when Kanye changes the lyrics slightly and says Tell Gekyume Dady's not gone. Gekyume is Xxxtentacion's son and the fact that ye is not only using X's art mindlessly but is tributing him and connecting his part of the song back to X is beautifull for me. Btw Gekyume is a term X coined which also means higher plane of thought or being. I also love how there is clips of X talking about Ye and humming Selfish and his songs were planned to be featured on Yhandi before it was scrapped, it shows that whilst Ye has repurposed it, he is not taking advantage of X's material the same way his label has been doing in a very dirty way ever since his passing. (If you didn't know X's situation has been even worse than pop smoke's where the label has released demos and clearly bad quality or unfinished songs or even ideas or verses of X just to make some extra money and added random features which made no sense. THERE IS WHOLE ALBUMS OF THIS. X was a rising talent and whilst the music he was doing was not my favourite you could truly see a lot of potential in him to become a legendary, and i mean legendary, artist and kanye did too!)

I didn't even know that was what he meant by Gekyume. Powerful

Donda 2 comes off to me almost like a soundtrack to a depressing science fiction satire. A lot of the songs have a really futuristic sound like Get Lost, Too Easy, Flowers, and some of them also sound like they were lifted straight from a movie, like Security (which actually was), Sci Fi, Lord Lift Me up, and maybe Pablo and Happy. I think City of Gods may just been thrown on the album since it was a single but overall I think there's a fairly consistent sound and theme that people are overlooking. It's probably going to continue to receive updates and I could see it being released in a more complete state on streaming services eventually and by that point it'll be a lot more clear.

DS2 is the future album most people like. It’s definately a good album to start with, however some of it hasn’t aged that well. I’d argue that his best album is The WIZRD, which he released in 2019.

If you want a similar experience of hearing a progression of Kanye’s “demos” turning into an album (or sections of multiple, in this case), Yandhi is a pretty good listen. It’s very messy, similar to Donda 2 and even early versions of life of Pablo, but it feels more complete than Donda 2 currently is. It also eventually developed into most of Jesus is King and some of Donda (hurricane). It’s interesting listening to these “demo” or early versions of Kanye’s albums and seeing his progression towards a finished product. He has a slew of unfinished or unreleased albums, but Yandhi was the most hyped of all of his unreleased albums probably.

Only 25 minutes in and you are making some BEAUTIFUL observations, as an artist and a huge fan of Kanye, you are soooo correct in what you said about changing between passive listening and the writing pov. During the listening parties for Donda 1 I was in a personal race to finish the album before Kanye, I was taking the unfinished versions of each song and producing, mixing and mastering them to sound finished which allowed me to have a completely separate version of Donda 1 compared to his, changing my entire view on the passive music going experience.

The "writerly" concept is really interesting. Just last night I thought the same thing about the repetitiveness of the album lending itself really well for the stem player. Messing with the stem player with these beats is a lot easier for me than random songs I've added or even older Ye songs. I'm glad someone else noticed too. It's possible that it wasn't intentional and it's just a byproduct of being unfinished. It's also possible that the producers and Ye did it on purpose specifically for this reason, but will change for the final release just to make it more palatable to a general audience. I think it's a super good sign that we have two versions of True Love right now though. Great video again Professor Skye.

The future features on this album are kind of weak for now imo but his best albums are 1. DS2 2. Monster 3. 56 nights DS2 is the best but it is just full of bangers whilst monster is more conceptual an lyrical and has his best song by far in Codeine Crazy, 56 nights is his most hype and one of his most experimental and is worth checking out specifically for the songs No Compadre and specially March Madness

My favorite example of a “writable” novel would have to be shadow of the torturer and the following books in the book of the new sun series. It’s so cryptic and hard to digest, simultaneously sci-fi, lotr style fantasy, post apocalyptic, and philosophical all at the same time. You can barley understand what the strange nouns used mean, but many are references to ancient history. Prehistoric animals Rome an earth millions of years in the future, then in an APPENDIX you find that all animals left on earth are alien creatures totally unlike these species. It boggles the mind and forces you to dream impossible landscapes, characters, and situations. Nobody has the same story in their head while reading.

Prof. You gotta listen to DS2! Cultural critic/poet Hanif Abdurraqib said it’s a break up album about all the ways we try to take our minds away from heartbreak, and I think it’s a great description. Monster and 56 Nights as also great by DS2 is mine and many others’ personal favorite. He went on an insane run of recording various high quality mixtapes in like a 16 month span. If you like DS2 you’ll like all those. Great video!

Always love hearing your take Prof! I’m not the biggest Future fan, but I enjoyed his collab album with Drake (What a time to be Alive), EVOL, and DS2. But you need to listen to Xxxtentacion! Both his album “?” and “17” are phenomenal!!! That kid was so talented. He could rap a ton of flows, sing like an angel, scream like the devil. I think he was poised to the lead the new school. His death was a serious loss for all music fans. As for music like Too easy… maybe (early) Cashmere cat? Jpegmafia? Flume?

if this version of the album resonated with you, i think you'd like the updated version even better. a few of the songs like pablo, too easy, and we did it kid have leaked in their finished forms and are incredible, and others just received a cleaner mix thanks to Mike Dean. Also, fantastic songs that were omitted like 530, Maintenance and Mr. Miyagi have leaked in their final forms as well. I could send you a copy if you want, since it's not on the stem player.

I don't disagree with people saying DS2 but I'm going to recommend you listen to Monster by Future. I was a Future fan before Monster, but that album really hooked me from start to finish and it's still my favorite. I get lost in its dark and rich soundscape. It's definitely one of his darkest albums and he kind of turns up the autotune and wails about drowning his sorrows in women and codeine. The closer, "Codeine Crazy," is hands down my favorite Future song.

If you're looking to listen to some xxxtentaction songs similar to the one on Donda 2 you should listen "17" it has a lot of raw emotions on it even Kendrick Lamar retweeted the album saying that people should listen it and see what they feel form the music. His most popular album is the titled "?" which is a more all round album and also the most streamed rap album on spotify. My personal favourite album though is "Revenge" one because this is his debut album and he himself said this album was him displaying his versatility to his contemporaries, but also because this was the time where he really started gaining popularity. At the start most considered his music poorly mixed but I then stayed and listened to his music because it tapped into my emotions very strongly and I'd never had music do that before so I stayed along for the ride. Albums 17 - similar vibe to xxxtentaction's sound on Donda 2 ? - His most popular and streamed album Revenge - His debut

Scifi is my favorite song on the album and I didn't know that Kim Kardashian's speech was cut off. But I think that makes the song more beautiful. The beat has this futuristic dystopian feel to it, but it's as if it's being played at a funeral. When I listen to the beginning, I can picture Kanye sitting alone in a dark, all white room, with no other furniture and the only light source being the tv, as he's rewinding and listening to that section of the Kim's speech, over and over again. We can't see if he's crying or not. Some things need to be kept private. That's the feel I get from the song and in particular Kim's speech. But I have to agree this one feels unfinished and I'm most offended by that. This song has the potential to be the Street Lights or the Ghost Town of Donda 2, but instead we got a merely great song, instead of a transcendental one.

I definitely think Security is a problematic song. Whether that is on purpose and serves a role in the greater context of the album is ultimately up to the listener. I believe in the spirit of being completely authentic in his expression, it would just seem a bit fractured to not include his angry episodes and emotions caused by the divorce as well as the depression that goes along with it. He has never really been one to alter his genuine articulation because it could have negative consequences, furthermore, it wouldn’t be 100% Kanye to leave out the nasty side of divorce, whether it will present a bad message, or drive his family further away.

Save Me by Future is his best album. Shortest one and there is no filler. Probably his most retrospective and mature album, and maybe his most artistic as well. It’s the most underrated. Most of his albums are definitely dark, but this is where he confronts that’s in the most sorrowful way. No hits on the album, but it show the best side of him.

It’s like trap R&B with drowned in a disgusting amount of autotune. “Love thy enemies” in particular actually has some really beautiful lyrics. It’s the album no one talks about, but should be considered way more when looking at trap as whole.

HNDRXX is super underrated in my opinion, people just don't like his singing as much as his rapping but it's my favorite for sure

You have to listen to DS2. It's his best album. I don't fuck with future like that either but I love DS2

DS2 is a good entry point but Monster is his most raw, aggressive, and best album

This album is a mess. A very interesting mess that I’m very excited to see evolve. Some amazing tracks on here with some more work they could be perfect.
