Although the Irwin might have that comfortable curve and extra storage the Milwaukee, not only has that convenient screwdriver but, a handy bottle opener and that's going to be a bit difficult for the competitors to top. Milwaukee is still #1 in my opinion

Another great one TRZ👍👍👍 I can see how the Irwin might be the choice for many but I'm sticking with the basic small fastback. Mainly because it is the perfect sized utility knife for having on you at all times as it's slim and small enough to pocket carry without being annoying and it's still big and robust enough to hard use unlike those really small compact folding utility knives.

I have used the Fastback for a couple years. Mostly cutting up a ton of boxes at work. I used the Husky before, but I like the one handed opening of the Fastback. I also think I'm still using my first blade. I just run a file over the blade and put the edge back and it stays sharp several days. The blades are the best I've ever had. I don't bleed red mainly because everything is overpriced except around the holidays and then only some tools have a decent price. I buy for quality not name, that's why I'm in multiple platforms. Nobody makes the best in every tool.

I have 2 fastbacks that came in the 2 pack about 3 years ago. One is the smaller version that locks only straight out and the other locks in 2 positions; straight and angled. The angled is perfect for roofing. And with 4 or 5 blades on board you can keep straight and hooked blades if you want to carry only one knife. I carry both on me and use em both everyday on the job. The og fastback that locks in 2 positions with 4 o5 blades in storage is still the king. IF you can find them.

I used a fastback at work and had to buy myself one. Im not concerned about it opening in my pocket. It takes a firm press on the button, and when its released it reapplies pressure to hold the blade. The blade only swings freely with the button pressed. The Irwin looks fine, I think the grip is the biggest factor.

The selling point for me on the milwaukee was the fact that it had bronze washers on it. It is the only utility knife I have found with bronze washers. Every other utility knife I have seen had the plastic washers that are going to gum up way more quickly than the bronze. Just like a pocket knife. Quality knives have bronze and the Walmart knives you grab have plastic.

@@calebwhite6173 i did roofing for years before they came out w the fastback. I hated every utility knife this style cause they were all junk. I always used the fatmax or one similar that u jus slide the blade out. Or the ones had to unscrew to get to the blade storage except this one yellow one there was a button in the middle you pushed n the whole knife like scissored open. That was my favorite. Then when i got the fastback i was like damn i wish they had these when i was still roofing. Sometimes the button to release the blade can be a little finicky but still the best knife.

@@jacksmith2315 yeah I found that issue on the bigger one but the more compact one never had a issue. Probably just per batch I found on some I press just before it bottoms out and it goes freely. My other one I just press and flick. The one with the plastic body is wayyy more durable than I would have ever thought and it gets a real nice patina that some Milwaukee get with time in I love it. I never liked the screw on ones either b/c they were finicky and took too long to load a new blade. I can go through 5 in a day easy and it’s a pain when you want a fresh blade. Also. I just do new blades. I know some that keep their blade till destroyed but it’s not worth it. Nothin like fresh blade thru felt or ice and water haha. Also. Never had a problem with the little blade button. I clean the blade a little before I swap ends on it if it wants to stick but it’s a really well built tool.

@@calebwhite6173 ya the blade change button is the one i was talking about that could be a little finicky for me. Before the fastback i jus like the fatmax or the ones you unscrew to change the blade because they were the most reliable. Ya it takes longer to change the blade but they just last way long than all the other flip out ones, until the fastback. On trick i learned when cutting caps, but obvi works cutting anything, when the tip of the blade starts to get dull i jus break of the tip and its like a new blade. I was jus a kid cuttin caps for someone else n i was cutting ton of them. When i asked the guy for the third blade he was like jeez why you goin thru so many blades? Jus do this...broke the tip off n it was like gettin 2 blades out of 1. I dont really do that now cause the quality of blades is better now and im not roofing going thru so many blades so fast. But when goin thru so many blades so fast jus brake the tip off works great. Faster than changin the blade too haha

Been using milwaukee fastbacks for past 5 years or so, but recently stumbled on a Husky Utility knife at Home Depot with same quick release button mechanism and just had to buy it to try it out. Been using it for past few weeks and so far I think it's extremely nice but not better than milwaukee, probably second best utility knife. Stores 3 blades, nice meaty zinc (I think) handle, and fairly straight profile with 2 extra notches that fixes blades in 90 and 45 degree positions. The one big downside compared to milwaukee is a blade change mechanism. It doesn't just slide in and out of a holder with a press of a button, you have to slide button back, then lower one side of the holder to expose whole blade, then lift up the blade. A bit more cumbersome, but other than that the knife seems to be real nass like.

These are my primary for just the reasons you listed here. Two for home, one in packout, Ridgid carrier, and one in each of several other tool chest, boxes and others. Main reason is not only lifetime guarantee and easy to exchange if I ever did or do break one. Christmas time they are usually found around $10 with 50-100 free blades. My last two purchases were double packs with the 100 blades for $14 and change. Ideal for great little gifts for others in need. Have seen the dewalt and fastbacks among other brands used by others and given them crap when they want to borrow my husky when theirs go the way of the trash bin for whatever reason. Not going to argue which is best as it’s still a preference tool but seems to have the same capabilities of other major brands with a proven durability that suits me. Stay safe all

When my dad was training me for field work back when I was 13-16 he used those husky knives. He had one that was thicker and heavier and then 4 or 5 of the super low profile thin ones. I LOVED those thin ones. They were stupid light and you could clip them in the pockets while retaining near 100% open pocket volume. These days I’m back on the old iteration of the Irwin. The skeletized one without the storage space for your blades. It’s probably over 10 years old so it doesn’t swing open even with wd-40 however it’s not designed to swing open anyways. It has a locking position at 45° that allows you to use the quick release for the blade.

I do like all the Milwaukee knives. However my current favorite utility knife is the tough built utility/scraper knife

My blade has a tendency to pull put when cutting quad or metal. I use the irwin in this video for a hook and a straight blade and I'll never ever use a different knife again

The fastback has a secret place on the inside of the handle for an extra blade. It’s on the right side and it locks in place.

I see lots of models that have straight and bent models. Maybe Irwin will listen and offer both as well!

You may want to take a look at the folding Fiskars Pro utility knife. They have it at Lowes as well as the blades.

The thing I like about Irwin is it doesn't have that stupid notch in blade holder that gets caught on plastic protection that I use all the time

The Milwaukee 48-22-1502 utility knife has the option of 5 blade storage that’s what I use every day. Nothing against Irwin but I agree I like the straight shaft of the Milwaukee

I’m so confused Clint, I use my Milwaukee Fastback with Irwin blades, I think THAT is the best knife on the market, best of both. Irwin make great blades, Milwaukee make great knife carcasses. So I reckon I’ve found the best combo. Reagan ding blade storage my fastback stores 3 blades at least,if not 4 but maybe the euro model is different?

Man I was thinking of getting a Milwaukee Fastback ( the one with the philips head and flat) $20 at the Depot. Seen Husky and Irwin’s version, and stalled on my purchase. Holy crap, man all y’all got it wrong. So for quick deployment get a cheap Kershaw with an Emerson wave feature (not too many steels to pick from, but recommend the D2 steel version). Seriously, there is nothing faster than that, but for something more razor, I absolutely love the Toughbuilt Utility Knife. No, I am not talkin’ bout that corny one that flips from a standard razor to a razor scraper (cool, but anyone that scrapes knows that your blade has got to be perfect for most applications). I do dig the versatility. Naw, what I am talkin’ bout is their one that holds 5- 6 spares in the rear of the handle, and 5 - 6 up front with a button for quick change. I bought them in a set of two with 50 blades at Lowes fer $11, no kidding. There is no way I would trade one of these utility knives for 3 of the best Irwin or Milwaukee Utility knives. No lie. Not saying that it is better, just is faster with respect to the change of blade, and what… 10 - 12 additional blades! I wish I knew the name of the exact kind I have so I could share it with you. They look like a standard retractable utility knife (gray and black in color), but if you need to change out your blades often, there is no substitute. They ran me $5.50 a piece. Wouldn’t sell them for $50. Yeah, they are that bad ass!

I don't think people complain about the blade releasing in your pocket.. it happens when you hold the knife near the blade for more control and your index finger rest right on the release. I still love all my fastbacks must have half a dozen by now.

As much as I like the Milwaukee, I use a DeWalt for work travel because of the blade storage. I can kill a blade pretty quick cutting stretch wrap and boxes. I may have to try one of those Irwin knives. Is there a Milwaukee that has blade storage?

Honestly, when I use a Sheetrock knife (or box cutter, depending on whom your working with), I'm pulling out my Kobalt non folding, BUT 10 blade with auto-reload feature. That thing ROCKS! Because, when I start going through replaceable blades, I'm LUCKY if 5 lasts me more then a half a day.

Although some won't admit it, the color scheme does play a role in what tools you choose. some like neon green, while others like yellow/blk or red/blk.
