*Summary:* Japan is amazing if you're visiting. Japan becomes decent once you're staying and the food is amazing all the time.

Japan is amazing whether you're visiting or staying. And I say that as a 12 year Tokyo resident who applied for the citizenship. You need to learn Japanese and become fluent though, otherwise you might as well go home.

If you come to visit Japan, let your expectations run wild. It's a fantastic country to visit. However, when you come to live, come with a more realistic outlook. If you think Japan is going to be like anime, you are 100% going to be disappointed. While Japan has many ups that say the US does not have, it also has many other downs. Paperwork is just one of the many issues present in this country. Xenophobia is rampant and you have a good chance of experiencing rough work life. Too many times I see people viewing Japan as some holy country with their rose-tinted glasses blinding them from the reality of what Japan is. Don't get me wrong, Japan can be a wonderful country to not only visit but to live in. But all those blind weebs that don't understand a thing about Japanese culture outside of anime will most certainly not enjoy their time here.

I would come to Japan with the mentality of someone seeking employment, not as someone who’s trying to live out the anime life. First, speak almost fluent Japanese and second, have some marketable skills that can get you employed. Even Japanese people can’t get a job these days. It’s a hard life in Japan now. And especially with coronavirus, the xenophobia is becoming more common amongst older generations.

Excessive bureaucracy and paperwork is something I'm used to in Brazil. Besides everything we know is not perfect in Japan, as long as I can live somewhere I can relax and not be scared everyday that someone might break into my house or rob me in the streets I know Japan would be a much better place to live. (For example, my house got broke into twice when I was inside a few years ago and I live in a nice and secure neighborhood compared to other areas). I guess it all comes down to expectation and previous experiences...

If you go anywhere just for a specific reason or hobby, eventually the cultural shock will wear off and you'll feel lost. Word of advice, if you want to live in Japan do it for multiple reasons. Take an interest in the culture, travel outside of the city and don't just stay in one location, stop and appreciate the little things, learn all sorts of new things. Don't just go because you like anime. If that's the reason then there's no reason to go for a extended period of time, just go on vacation. I've heard this story a million times, people going to Australia to have fun, eventually the fun wears off. People going to Korea for Kpop, people going to Japan for anime, etc. Eventually, that feeling of a new adventure fades and you need more reasons to keep you grounded.

It's not so surprising that people that are into popular forms of escapism like anime and manga have unrealistic ideas about daily life in foreign country like Japan... 1:53 Jeez, I wish I had a childhood like that. I’ve been stuck in the southeastern United States all my life and have never once set foot in another country. I’ve just never been financially capable. Never even been to popular places in my own country, like New York City, Washington DC, or Los Angeles, because the US is just so fucking massive. I often wish I was born in Europe. Consider yourself lucky, and yes, privileged. Some people would kill to see the Colosseum, the Eiffel tower, or even Big Ben.

As someone who was born in UK and grew up in different countries in my eyes you are lucky, i cannot fathom how big and diverse america must be, i say this to people who look at other countries with rose tinted glasses, the novelty wears off quickly, even quicker for somebody like me who has never had a stable country, basically i tried my best to instate my self in the local culture of the countries i grew up in best i could and i managed to a success in one of the most xenophobic countries (Qatar) but fact is even if you manage to be accepted by the locals there is still redtape and government to remind you how you will always be a foreigner. Meanwhile in the US you have a country so massive , it has all types of geography, weather, seasons, cultures and backgrounds. Even if you were born in Europe unless you were lucky to be born in a city with beautiful architecture and nature it wont be special i live in countryside in the UK, and its boring and crap . Visiting a bustling city like London once in a while feels like going to wonderland, anywhere else outside london just feels bland. And you guys have way more population and diversity in a mediocre city than most of UK’s major cities.

I think that it’s not only about the expectations you have of the country you are about to visit, but the country you come from. I’m from Mexico, and here we have to deal with insecurity, a terrible government and inequality, even between ourselves. It’s not about being a foreigner, here you are judged by the color of your skin, the state you come from and where you studied. So if in Japan my main problem would be the later, without the insecurity and the shitty government, I’m in.

Also for Conner: "So my parents took me all to Europe all the time..." camping in France ?? :'D The Tesco deal sounds like great value though but in my experience the really good food is rarely if ever found at major chains.

On my 4th year here. I've become just like the locals: lonely, neurotic, and wanting to drink and be escapist all the time. You accept it and surrender to it, if you can. All foreigners who stay here a while go through the same process: first it's excitement, then disillusionment, then you're in too deep which triggers hatred, then guilt, then surrender.

Like idk I plan to first come as tourist to see if I can study Masters in Japan(maybe Koshigaya maybe other city will see) if I can then I'll then I'll be there for 2-3yrs due to program being that long and decide if I should stay to live and work in Japan or go back to country I live in. And I was watching one guy and another girl(different videos) who are both religious and both guy and girl got job in Japan and they landed pretty well paying job for start and when I saw both videos of them guy was like 4 and girl was 5 yrs in Japan already and they come from less economically stable country and they said both that they really like Japan and are living much better then in their homelands. Of course when they get older like Pension they might return to their country but that is far fetched since we don't know what future gets us. But overall they really had any complaints being Gaijin(foreigner) immigrant whatever you want to call it. On vacations yea they return to their city to visit parents and such but they said they dint plan to return to their homelanda any time soon. It is just you have to wager out positives and negatives. If you can balance that they you should be good to stay there.

I've lived in Tokyo for 12 years and applied for the citizenship. Never once went through disillusionment. Being at least 90% fluent in the language is the number 1 factor that will make the difference between loving the country and being a weird bitter loner. Learn the language of the country you live in. That's good advice anywhere on earth, yet so many people think they will enjoy life in Japan being literally illiterate.

Whether spoons is disgusting. I have only eaten there twice due to other people dragging me there. They serve you microwave meal from a wholesale place. It’s one of the worst places in the UK especially with what they did to their staff during lockdown. Shit company.

The society is very strict and mannered, the economy is stagnant but somehow stable, and actually there are a lot of jobs but the work culture is very harsh

How are y'all able to have work VISA's without support of a big company or being married to a local? Isn't it really hard to stay for any decent time otherwise?
