As cool as it'd be the truth is in the U.S the Master system was quiet obscure, so the nostalgia $ just isn't there compared to the Genesis.. Also as much as people complain about there not being a Dreamcast/Saturn mini also, I remember vividly back then people ignoring them until the Playstation dropped, not to mention the Saturn was $399 at launch, adjusted for inflation probably puts it at around $600!

Turbo Grafx 16 was a fiasco on US and Europe, and yet Konami released the mini. Besides, Master Sytem was a huge sucess on Europe and South America.

Good luck with that. The console, while popular in Europe and S.A., flopped both in Japan and N.A. Unless there's a huge demand by those alternative markets, I highly doubt it will ever happen.

That's not entirely true. It was, but it is significantly harder to do than any of the other mini's. It was super easy to screw up and permanently brick the device though which most people would have ended up doing. The effort to take it further just kinda fizzled out. On the plus side, the controller works great on emulators and is a good option as nothing else does the turbo switches authentically

It DID get hacked, problem with it was that the lack of a reset button means there was no simple software hack anyone could do - every unit had to be opened and physically modded.

I am surprised they never pulled it off as easy as the NES and SNES mini. Although they both play TG 16 games perfectly once hacked.

`shadow` is the standard method for managing passwords in linux/unix systems for the past several decades. `busybox` can provide the shadow commands, so they were (possibly) present in the original Genesis Mini, just not as a separate package. I don't have any speculation why their using a separate package, but it may have a better track record for security, since it's more widely used than `busybox` on most installations.

There was a time when I wasn't into modding consoles, much less the mini consoles but I softmodded my original Xbox, a PS2, Nintendo Wii, even my NES and SNES Classics, my Genesis Mini and I also bought a PlayStation Classic just so I could mod it. I also modded my Nintendo 3DS. I remember hearing that the Sega Game Gear Micro was hard coded so it can't be hacked. I haven't got the Sega Genesis Mini 2 but maybe I'll do it. One day.

I do want to make some corrections to what you are saying. It isn't shadow security it's shadow secure TTY (teletype). It's the method of communicating with the device. In previous models they use a UART mode to establish a TTY session to gain root elevation. You are correct though that they are changing the way people can communicate with this device. Why they are doing that we can only speculate. However if there is one thing I know about hacking is that people take advantage of exploits to circumvent security protocols. That's why we have monthly updates to patch vulnerabilities. Since the genesis 2 is a closed system not receiving any patches it's only a matter of time before the system is hacked. It just may take longer.

From some reviews I've seen. Modding might make a few of the packaged games better. From flashes, to cut levels and odd music choices. I hope it can be modded to try adding a few Sega CD games to it.

That's it with the Sega CD games. Emulating those can be hit or miss. If the mini 2 had Popful Mail on it I would 100% have to get one.

It looks like all "shadow-securetty" does is "Allow root login through telnet" so it's a way to command line into the mini through telnet. I'm not familiar with how the hacking on the prior mini was actually done, but if they telnet'ed in to make changes it possible on the new mini that it might be password protected. Which isn't the end of the world, they would just need to figure out what that password is.

There was a fake plastic attachment piece. Was supposed to come with them. Not sure if they still do though. Also was supposed to be a fake 32X adapter you can put in it. All for aesthetic purposes. Just like the useless headphone jack on the first MD mini lol

I just got mine from Amazon UK a bit ago. Wow, they really wanted to get the product box as small as possible. Best way I can say it's as close is the first Nintendo 3DS box, just not as deep as it. They probably did this to get as much product on the shipping container as possible. I preferred the first box, it was more nicely laid out. I know box and layout isn't important to most people, but first impressions count. Not even sure this thing came with a plug.

if they wanted to make it harder to hack they could have just cut the data lines on the usb .. that would at the very least make you open it and then repair the lines ... most people wouldn't want to do that .. or wouldn't pay someone to do it for them

@@wesleycrushedher9553 No, this is Andre, I'll be showing Tom how to hack his;p On that note, the hackers that be are in the process of hacking the Mini 2 as we speak, but it will be a while yet before WE can do it - first, THEY have to document, code, bugtest and deploy a new version of Hakchi with mini 2 optimized features added, and that obviously takes some time! Best guess estimate, we'll be updating and customizing our Mini 2's for Christmas!

After looking through the hardware and software, all I can really say about it is "nothing that hasn't been seen before". On the hardware side, it's still the exact same SoC as always, and resembles a PC Engine Mini with double the RAM, double the eMMC, and a reset button. On the software side, it's pretty much a continuation of the Zuiki minis with built in LCD (e.g. Astro City Mini and Egret II Mini), in that it's using Yocto instead of Buildroot. Compared to the original Genesis Mini, the system libraries are newer, so you can't take the Genesis Mini 2 software and run it on Genesis Mini OS, although the opposite way works, and with the amount of free storage, you could run both on one device. File formats are still the same as usual, since it's M2, and although the new CD image format is a bit weird, it's still more or less the same as the format on PC Engine Mini, which is understood and custom CDs have already been generated for it. The only meaningful difference is they got rid of the discrete USB hub chip (can't blame them after how many of them fried on PCE Mini), so to still be able to use the front ports, they disconnected the data lines from the micro USB port at the back, so to connect USB OTG you need an A to A cable. The reset button still acts as a FEL button, but the jump to FEL via USB mechanism still exists, so with some code set up installing a mod could be as easy as turning the system on.

Mine arrived today from Amazon UK, would quite like to see it hacked if only to see what they've done regarding Truxton and giving you the option of playing the music at arcade speed, i.e. did they just patch the ROM and include it as an alternative version. Would also like to see whether Space Harrier 2 ROM is different or if they're just turbo charging the emulator I doubt they went through and optimised the code, also has the original Space Harrier on there, looks to be a Mega Drive ROM given the massive amounts of Sprite flicker, pretty cool though. Would be nice to put the patched ROMs on my Mega SD - assuming there's no reliance on emulation enhancements to get them working properly. Played some Hellfire and some Truxton, both play and sound amazing and I didn't have any issue with input lag over original hardware on my LG C1 using an OSSC. Nice that they included emulation of different filtering/sound chips.

Mine is supposed to be turning up today and I'm really looking forward to the MegaCD games and the new Space Harrier 2 ROM (which is supposed to be different from the orignal one on the MD Mini 1) Also, it has Super SF2 and a six-button pad, so looking forward to playing that - I thought it was criminal that the original MD Mini had SF2 but only the 3 button pads.

If you can get into it using FEL you can change the password shadow file, I have done it on THEA500 and used THEC64 shadow file so THEA500 has the same password, you just mount bind it with the one from the usb stick or copy it to a place on the firmware then overmount it then you will keep the original shadow file.

They are focusing on the Japanese release primarily, so unlike other regions, they got montly updates up until I think the end of August, have more than just Amazon to preorder from, and their website is more detailed than the US/European one. Outside of Japan, it's mostly been silence, outside of the preorder announcements.

@@VGManiac456 I think the Western Sega branches aren't really doing sales and distribution, only working on localising and qa-ing the unit itself. My Euro unit says its distributed by DartsLive, Sega's electronic darts machine company not Sega Europe itself. The western Sega branches probably haven't been saying much as its not really their responsibility to market them like it was the first time.

That's what I think people will hack it for; so they can customise the line-up just for them. Plus you could always turn a profit once hacked by letting people give you a list of games they want on theirs and blammo

Pre-ordered the NA Genesis version and then later also decided on pre-ordering the EU Mega Drive version. My plan is to play the Genesis version and keep the Mega Drive in it’s wrapping. I’m hoping these will be hacked and if turn the Mega Drive version into a arcade ROM machine. If enough time passes and hacking seems not possible I will sell my still unwrapped Mega Drive.

The only thing they made difficult for me was pre-ordering the Mega version and you get the North American version instead plus Amazon Japan uses DHL and the box is opened and you def need to verify to make sure you didn't get a brick. Now have to order from play-asia to get the proper version.

I hope this happens. With the Space Harrier and afterburner arcade, the system seems capable of running the sega 32 system, which means second generation arcade and 32x games could be possible.

Over a month in now and not even the slightest sign of a hack yet. I’m surprised this time there’s not really a conversation happening about it. When the first Genesis Mini came out there was a ton of buzz with project lunar and then hakchi. Project lunar seems like it was abandoned and hopefully they add support to hakchi for the Genesis Mini 2. @madlittlepixel Have you heard anything through the grapevine?

Genuinely have no idea why this would benefit them. They don't sell games for it, furthermore if it was a walk in the park to hack that would make it more desirable, and give sega more of a reason to produce more of em, because you still have to buy the hardware itself to hack it

Yeah never really understood how the TG16 mini wasn’t as successfully hacked? I’m not techy so sent out my OG Genesis mini for mod and it never returned so bought another and kept it original. This go id definitely want to try again to swap out the CD games as none are of my liking. Hopefully I’ll be able to find a modder that’s more reliable this go if and when it’s been successfully hacked LOL

Even with the new firmware, I reckon on it beig hacked in short time. The price is too high. A pi3 with retroflag case can be had for less with the same results, running on top of Blast 16. Yes I get it, these units are made for hard core collectors. Let's see.

Sega should've focused on releasing a Sega CD mini instead... the only reason I would get this one would've been to have the Sega CD games in the memory... but many important titles are not there, neither Lunar game, no Lords Of Thunder, no Terminator, no Snatcher... if you can't hack this machine, I have no interest.

I pre-ordered mine about a couple weeks ago and then just on the 26 of this month just before today Amazon of the US was trying to tell me that I need to update my payment method so I put back in the same information I made sure it was correct and then I updated them and then it did it again today. I did it through the Amazon shopping app the card information is not expired not until next year. Is there anybody else having this issue because it's like Amazon canceled the order and wants me to rebuy it or something. Because this happened twice I would love to know if anybody else is having a revision update payment method problem also a couple weeks ago I ordered something before the Genesis Mini 2 it was a Chromebook charger and it went through and shipped the next day and I knew that the Genesis Mini 2 was going to be on pre-order and that will ship out today but they keep giving me that update your payment method error. I know for a fact that the card number is correct the security code number three digit code is correct inspiration date is correct and zip code and address for shipping and billing address is correct. So please somebody help me if they're getting that same problem or maybe you can help me out madlittlepixal

Will never happen, I think they said before it would cost the consumer a minimum of 200 to purchase one if they made it due to costs in manufacturing, and they can't market that for an emulation device. At that rate they'd be better off re-releasing the actual machine itself. Well that was their argument anyway, personally I'd still buy it.

Get a mister fpga. Arm processors aren't the greatest at emulating Dreamcast unless you want to pay 500+ dollars for the latest snapdragon processors.

@@bruno-vicious I have a Steam Deck and an Anbernic RG552 and an Anbernic RG353P and they run Dreamcast great. I just wanted something cute and small to sit on my shelf next to my mini NES, Raspberry Pi 4 that's in a clear case about the size of a deck of cards with a fan, etc.

Shadow is the password storage database and securetty is a means of allowing root logins from "secure" consoles such as a serial console. There's nothing to see here, no they haven't made it harder to hack.

I have no interest in hacking the Genesis Mini 2 and I've hacked basically everything. Now that we have MiSTer...what is the point other than just to do it? It would be fun to put the list of 60 games on the EverSD though. It's a great list of games.

@@travissmith8017 there's not enough space to play Sega CD games on the mini I without a USB external drive though. Also M2 made a brand new optimised fast and accurate Sega Mega CD emulator just for the mini II.

Not sure TBH. I think it could go either way. The Turbo Grafx/PC Engine Mini never got a working hack that I'm aware of and I did look for one as I would have really liked to load some extra games on it. Also, though slightly different the mini cabs like the Sega Astro City and Taito Egret never got hacked either. I think a bit was done with the NeoGeo one but nothing as feature complete as say Hackchi for the Sega and Nintendo Minis.

This is the first thing I've ever ordered from Japan and I gotta say, I'm highly disappointed. The packaging was absolutely aweful. Just a few crumpled up pieces of brown paper. Only enough to barely cover 3 sides of the box and no packing above or below the system. Just aweful packaging considering it was being shipped thousands of miles. Also the box was double the size of the system box, so it could constantly slide around. I haven't tested mine yet. I definitely won't order anything again from Japan. The packaging was atrocious considering the price.

I used to swear by Amazon Japan's shipping and packaging. They were so good with it, never had an issue. But i noticed this last few packages Ive got from them has been badly packed, like they stopped caring like Amazon US..

What's the point of hacking these things anyways they seem more like collectibles than anything else. I mean if you want a full library there are so many other options. Just saying only cuz the hardware in these things usually sucks anyways. These always use cheap ass arm processors!
