Throughout the 90s hip hop was doing a lot of transitioning, from fashion to dance, appearance, and a lot of different styles were brought to the table, with every artist competing to see who could bring something new. Brand Nubian started off with great opportunity behind the Master of Ceremony success of Grand Puba and found success in the music industry, but also controversy due to their lyrics often being militant and sometimes homophobic. Even today many music outlets or a place like instagram has removed some of their songs because of it. Brand Nubian wasn't the best of rap groups, but they did have a unique pocket in time where they could've done more in the 90s. They broke up after their first album, and nothing has been the same since. Revolving door of on again off again between them made their music inconsistent and at some point time just went past them. Still a notable group in hip hop, but for these reasons, they didn't become who they were supposed to. Did Success Go To BRAND NUBIAN's Head? What Happened? Stunted Growth Music

Stunted Growth? Their prime years albumns were all solid, selling shy of gold, all while remainig true to their ideals which were contrary to the Gangsta Rap trend of the time. They gave their fans (Hip-Hop) what they wanted. Grand Puba as a Solo artist was the guy that took the torch from Big Daddy Kane and Passed it to Biggie as the smooth slick talking ladies man lyricist. Pubas growth may have been stunted, he had the makings of a super star but he was also a bit older having been making records near 10 years prior to his break out solo success.

No Success did not go to their head or stunt they growth. Puba was older & Moved like a solo Artist ( He was the guy people came to for features back then he as like drake.) puffy and others bite Puba style/ swag and Ran with it. What stunted they growth was the death of Conscious rap & the Growth / push of Gangster Rap to the masses. Record Companies did not put Money into promoting Conscious music. salute to Brand Nubian they music was still dope regardless

A lot of rap fans don't fuck with conscious rap. Its too preachy and you can't party to it. DJs aren't going to play Immortal Technique, dead prez, The Coup, Paris, and X-Clan in the clubs. Notice Grand Puba was the most successful as a solo artist because he knew how to mix the party vibe, consciousness, and emceeing all together. Whereas Lord Jamar was the least successful with his solo album because he is a hardcore preachy 5% er nut and is a weak rapper. If I owned a record label, sorry but I wouldn't sign acts like Immortal Technique and The Coup.

PUBA was a solo artist before the group. He told DJ PREMO on his show that LORD JAMAR AND SADAT X were his younger dudes and he wanted to put them on. The only way the label would put them on was if PUBA was a part of them. So he did the first album as BRAND NUBIAN understanding he would do his solo joint after.

And I think its kind of weird that that was the thing that he drew the line at. Plus he has his podcast with Rah Digga so he may feel he no longer needs Vlad to keep his name out there or whatever made him go on his show.

Brand Nubian has an underground album entitled "Time's Running Out", which was recorded in 1998, and shelved until the early 2000's. It's pretty dope, please check it out.

Excellent episode. Sadat X has been one of my favorite artists in his solo career. He released an album in 2023 that can be found on KZfaq. I'd love to see an episode like this on Brooklyn's hip-hop band, Stetsasonic.

One of the best hip hop groups ever. The 80s and 90s were something special as a whole. The music, movies, women looked way better than they do nowadays, bright colors, people actually used their brains and had talent, the clothes, more people where outside enjoying life, the cars, video games, and just the atmosphere as a whole was great.

In 1994/'95, sometimes I would walk into a record store like The Whiz or Tower Records, and be soooo confused by the amount of amazing top notch groups AND solo artists on the shelves that I wouldn't buy anything! I had to go back home and think it over!! Thats how dope Hip Hop was in the mid '90s. It was the Golden Age and I was silly enough to think it would last forever. I took it for granted, for real!

For me personally,I love In God We Trust. I don't skip a song on that album. Furthermore the Puba solo albums are also really dope to me. Both albums I still listen to till this day. You did forget Sadat x's Wild Cowboys album which also had dope tracks on it . I guess in terms of sales they didn't go to number one or whatever but as a lover of the craft I have to say I love the albums they brought to the table and made my times as a youth in the 90s more pleasurable.

Met Puba at Jazzy Jay's studio in the Bronx, round 1987. When Jay introduced me to him he kinda brushed me off as a nobody. Met Lord Jamar in 1986, him Angie B ( Stone) Lil Rodney C, and about three members of the Crash Crew, were involved in a rap play. Lord Jamar was very peace at that time. Last time I saw the God was about 2000 at a party for Harold Perrineau. He remembered me 14 years later. Lol. Their Foundation album is their second best Brand Nubian album. They good dudes.

Brand Nubian had the greatest misstep in hip hop history. They were not able to capitalize on how popular they really were after that first album. Their first album is one of the most bootlegged albums of all time. Bootlegging cost them millions of sales and dollars. Also , their ego clashes or whatever the problem was amongst the members stopped them from being more commercially successful. Their influence on fashion ( they ushered in the rugby shirt era) , slang, and consciousness was way bigger than has ever been recognized.

First heard of *Brand Nubian* from "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down", and Grand Puba as a solo artist. I came across the earlier work a bit later thanks to "Old School Monday" on *Video Music Box*. But since they were a duo as far as I knew, I didn't view the first album as definitive. Apparently "Everything Is Everything" was considered a low performing album - but I really wasn't paying attention to chart position , especially through a Pop lense. Just seemed like an expected next album to me, & (again probably due to the no Cable & Video Music Box combo) I heard the singles just as much as anything else out then. Regarding Grand Puba, it definitely did not strike me as unusual to mix Hip Hop & R&B at that point. Also thought it was interesting to compare Jay Z's solo plans to Rockafella & not Original Flava. Though I guess it fits, *Original Flava* would be his *Masters Of Ceremony* phase. Can't say I was expecting a Grand Puba + Drake comparison though 😂.

Puba was a known dude BEFORE Brand Nubian formed. He was in the group Masters of Ceremony. Puba always thought of himself as a solo artist. He was never staying long in that group. He felt he was the star. Of course, the money issue is always the cause.

It ended up hurting his career rather than helping it. If he did both, or at least hopped on the third album then Puba's career would have benefited and so would have Brand Nubian's.
