Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was the fourth live-action adaptation of the popular TTRPG system to come out and the first Dungeons & Dragons movie to actually be good. A year after its release, a lot has changed. D&D has seen a high point of popularity, peaking with Baldur's Gate 3.
But between the film's failure to recoup its budget, tons of scandals with Wizards of the Coast, and general criticism of modern fantasy cinema, does Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stand out?

Something I think about the movie that makes it stand out to other modern fantasy movies and shows is that its a legit funny movie, but it manages to do it without that tone of "Man, isn't it weird how our world works?" that takes you out of the movie. It also helps that its a fantasy movie that doesn't try to hard to feel serious and moody. Also, I was gonna debate you and saw Shart was best girl, but you played the clip and I knew I was beat

The whole controversy with D&D’s OGL reminded me of how Bethesda tried (and still is trying to, apparently) make people pay for mods for Skyrim. Companies trying to monopolize fan or creator driven projects using that use their stuff is always an interesting thing to see as it shows just how greedy companies can get.

It’s especially scummy because neither company releases finished games in the first place. Though D&D at least has the excuse that the players doing all the work is the point of the genre

Hell yeah Shannara mentioned. Even aside from being a lifelong D&D fan and this movie capturing that vibe really well, this movie perfectly captured the feeling of watching Krull for the first time as a kid, a movie I still love to this day.

@@agramuglia Yeah, maybe they should’ve. But truthfully, the Film had already slated to come out on a defined release date, and it’s pretty damn Sad. Cause holding it back for a Month or 2 would damage the money that comes in too. If you know Greed, you know they are all in on self-preservation. Hasbro makes me worry. I can’t deny that my desire to see more Power Rangers shows is also in jeopardy due to their need to balloon their Sales Quotas. And the fact that D&D is suffering under Hasbro and WOTC’s, I can’t help but wonder where things will go from here, or if they’ll die and stagnant like other properties I was a fan of back in the 90s!

Until the day I die, I will defend the first D&D movie as nearly perfect. It was an onscreen representation of every half assed weekend game of D&D that every experienced player has ever been in. I've been in THAT campaign. You've been in THAT campaign. It was pure. The only thing that would have made it truly perfect would have been to add a scene at the very end where the camera fades from the fantasy world to a table with books, dice, papers and half eaten pizza as all the actors in regular clothes start packing up and asking about the next session.
@ajerqureshi6411

I think a reason the first DnD movie is often considered a travesty aside from its objectively bad filmmaking stuff (lackluster effects and sets and bad acting for example) is that it didn’t feel like a GOOD DnD game in general…it felt more like all those DnD horror stories crept in an invaded the narrative… Things like a player character being the solo main attention and other characters are just there…heck the dwarf character just felt like a random player that joined in several sessions late and wasn’t given any direction on what kind of character they wanted to make. Even the plot feels much more railroaded.

Great video dude. I'm glad I wasn't the only person who thought it swung FAR above it's weight/budget. Definitely a confluence of factors conspired against it, which I think you covered pretty well - but personally, I felt another big one was the fact there was almost *no* promotion for it. Advertising/promotion campaigns can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and I can't help but suspect that Hasbro didn't want to commit and (in their eyes) risk more money on it. I think that if it *had* gotten a big advertising push, and more/better trailers then I think it could have been a success. It really felt like it honestly had something entertaining for the whole family, and D&D fans and non-fans alike, and it was a shame to see it be considered a "flop".

My two cents, much like the Warcraft movie from a couple years ago (that I personally also found really fun and would declare that a cult movie despite not knowing much of anything of warcraft) I think people got too use to fantasy being gritty "realistic" like LOTR/Game of thrones that they forgot for the longest time, that was not what the fantasy genre was and that fantasy can be fun, and bright, and colorful and not always needing to be broody political machinations and sex and monologues about politics with Mortal Kombat violence as people are brutally massacred.

I did not love the DnD movie because it struck me as both extremely typical and extremely safe, while sanding off many of the most interesting aspects of the DnD experience for the sake of reaching a broader audience. However, I will still bemoan its failure at the box office, for indicating to Wizards that they either can't make a successful DnD movie, or if they do, it will have to be even more aggressively generic and cynical than this one. I am just glad BG3, a much truer representative of DnD's inherent weirdness, was massively more successful.

Yes, such delightful, three dimensional characters, whose names I can't remember so I will designate them by their classes: Bard: The protagonist. The person whose motivation drives the story, because no one else has any. Barbarian: She's stupid. Sorceror: He's incompetent. Paladin: He's a paladin. Druid: She's not a druid. She's used for one visually pleasing set piece, and does nothing for the rest of the film. The movie flopped because it was TERRIBLE, because the audience rightly understood that you can't build a film out of gags and Easter eggs.

The d&d movie was always going to flop because the d&d community is niche, and people do not go to pay for movies in theaters anymore even for projects that would’ve normally done well pre-covid. They all just wait for them to hit streaming since an average movie ticket will be $20+ min pre-snacks or other extras. D&d being niche meant the general audience had no real connection to it and there was no real word of mouth propelling others to go out and watch. The only movies that seem to do well now in theaters post covid are films with some sort of audience attachment built in or strong “word of mouth” potential. Which is why every movie seems to be a remake, part of a franchise, or full of buzzing celeb actors/shock value to dive personal marketing

5:10. Oh Jesus Christ. Here we Go with this Argument about Humor, and the Weedonisms that Joss Whedon made. LISTEN! Joss Weedon didn’t Create that Form of Humor! BUDDY COP Movies Did! Tango & Cash! Lethal Weapon! “I Come In PEACE!” Those Films are Big Action Films that Punchuated that type Humor and Commentary at times! But All had Their own Tones! The Reason why the Humor Works so Well In the Marvel Films, was that it was written with the Intent at Giving these Characters with Massive Comic book histories A lot more Expression and Character! Even Chris Hemsworth admits that Without those Comedic Elements, he Would Drop out of the Thor Movies Immediately! It was Avengers and Even Joss Weedon who saw the Potential of Thor to be a Guy who loves to be abit fun even though he has a Fantastical and Rather Serious Responsibilities that weigh on him. The D&D:HAT shouldn’t be disregarded for doing this either! If Peter Jackson can get away with putting some light Buddy Cop Humor in the Film with Gimli for most of his scenes to prove how much of a Badass he is, or to just have him endure some shenanigans from his current situation. Then We all Can be fine with how Marvel has allowed some humor to fill their movies. None of the Films are bad, I can’t say the same for the Quality control on some of their tv offerings, “Secret Invasion” being the Headliner for True disappointment there.

The sorcerer is some kind of schrodingers cat of being either a sorcerer or a wizard and I don't think even the writers knew which. The paladin is also not a paladin, just some dude with a sword.
