Many argue the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy ruined the beloved trio from the original trilogy: Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, & Princess Leia Organa. I love the Star Wars Trilogy, and I especially love Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, & Princess Leia Organa. But this nothing that those three were ruined by the sequel trilogy is not true. In this video, I discuss why the Sequel Trilogy Did NOT ruin Han, Luke, & Leia.

One thing I like about TBoBF is that we see Luke falling back to the teachings of the Jedi Order, so that later when he realises that he failed Ben Solo, he realises that the way the Jedi did things was so wrong, like we saw in TLJ. Luke's character arc in TLJ has to be one of my favourite character arcs in all of Star Wars.

This is so dumb. The original trilogy already showed that Luke didn't adhere to the old teachings of the Jedi, why would he suddenly choose to follow them?
@JJ_Binks
@JJ_Binks 2 жыл бұрын
@@verbalkint4258 In the Original Trilogy, Luke didn't really know about the old Jedi teachings (or at least not to the extent that he would've later learned through studying the ancient texts). So he couldn't really have been actively trying to not adhere to them. Once he learned about 'the old way' he would've tried to implement that to restore the Jedi Order to its former glory. It was only through Ben Solo's fall that Luke was able to truly realise that the way of the old Jedi Order was completely messed up. The reason he chose to follow them after the OT was because he was "Luke Skywalker, the legend", and if he was able to redeem Darth Vader, then surely he would be able to restore the Jedi Order to its former glory. He became arrogant. Problem is, he also took it to mean that "if you can't do it this way, then I guess you can't do it any way", hence "It's time for the Jedi to end".

@JJ Binks Luke did know about the old jedi ways because Yoda told him about them, albeit indirectly. Yoda told him that he shouldn't go save his friends and that Vader couldn't be brought back to the light, that attachment was dangerous. Luke ignored his advice and did these things anyway, literally the only reason Vader was brought back to the light was due to the attachment and bond they each shared. Luke trying to kill kylo in his sleep goes against everything we've seen from him as a character, you mean to tell me that he "still sensed the good" in Vader, a homicidal sith lord, but felt the need to kill his nephew because of a bad dream? I mean seriously.. none of this is even explained, Luke apparently just "became" this way, when in the OT he was an idealist.

@@verbalkint4258 Luke igniting his saber for just a second is an echo of the same flaw he had when he went savage on Vader and cut off his hand. When his loved ones are threatened, he temporarily goes blind. Note that literally all he did was turn on the weapon, then immediately think better of it, whereas when Vader threatened Leia he went totally berserk for several seconds, and would have cut Vader in two several times had the Sith Lord not been ready to defend himself. No, a momentary lapse of judgment does not mean they manufactured a character flaw that was never there. You are bending over backwards to come up with reasons why the ST is wrong, and you are just plain wrong.

Even if we ignore comparisons to the OT, the way the big three was handled in certain aspects is still pretty weird. In the case with Luke should he really be all that shocked to find out that his dark side corrupted nephew who murdered his students has also killed Han? Did he not once consider that Kylo could also threaten the lives of his other loved ones? And why wouldn’t he immediately start asking Rey questions when they first meet instead of trying to ghost her? He should probably be compelled to ask how many other people know where he is. If not for his sake then for the sake of the island’s inhabitants.

I appreciate your stances on this, and the arguements you made are valid. But the one thing that i just cannot see as a good take on Luke is believing that he would ever raise a lightsaber to Kylo just because he sensed evil in him. Luke, in Legends and in Canon, is the one character that sees the good in even the worst people. Ironically, Battlefront 2 really showed a great example of this, with Luke risking his own life to protect an Empire agent who likely killed hundreds of his allies. Would he be perturbed and possibly confront him, yes. But Rian does not even imply that Luke approached Kylo about it, and just went straight to thinking of murdering him. And we cannot say that it was Palpatine guiding events, as Luke has proven, in canon, to completely resist mind tricks and force suggestions. Does this ruin Luke? Not really. But Rian should have given us more than just saying that a hopeful and earnest Luke (before being betrayed) suddenly thought about killing Kylo, because that is not what Luke would do.

Perfectly said. To be fair, I don't like how TFA made the story tragic for the trio, but the characters themselves weren't ruined in any way. Especially Leia and Luke, who were made even more impressive and inspiring as we saw them overcome even greater challenges in their later years. Luke against the First Order is my favourite scene in all SW and his death is the most beautiful death I've ever seen in a movie! Sadly, it was impossible for Leia to have such a powerful scene in TROS but her demise was still good and really touching! Great video! I'm very mixed on the whole topic of whether the OT heroes were "ruined" in the ST. Personally, I don't think they were "ruined", but I was somewhat disappointed with the direction they decided to take the characters in (in regards to their failures). However, if I put my gripes with the direction they took the ST in aside, I think they did a decent job with all three characters. I'm glad they actually used Luke's failure to propel his character growth forward and give him a meaningful arc.

I agree with alot of what you are saying, but there are issues with the characters that you didnt address here, and that are far bigger issues to me at least. Biggest is the entire purpose of lukes character. I like the idea of giving him actual character development and a character arc, but it fails miserably in its execution imo. That is because the entire pillar that his character is built on now is non sensical. Luke skywalker would never try to kill ben just because he had some evil in him. In rotj, Luke put all of his friends and the entire galaxy at stake just because he believed that his father, one of the most evil beings in the galaxy, could be turned to the good side. Seeing him throw all of that out the window in the sequels and try to kill his sisters son because he believed evil could win over good is extremely dissapointing and doesnt fit his character. It also feels pretty cheap that the story is built on a stupid mistake luke made with little context or explanation, and the fact that he didnt try to fix his mistake also doesnt make sense to me. As for han & leia, i think they are fine from a narrative standpoint. Looking at the big picture tho, i think its dissapointing and boring that they decided to just copy paste alot of stuff. Like they couldnt even give han something more interesting than just "he went back to smuggling". Theres so much stuff you could do but they played it too safe. And with luke, they were too bold

I love what they did with all 3 (I know not many talk about leia, Luke is the more divisive one) Han given an arc with his son, and later redeeming him makes him have a story purpose other than fan service (cough, Tobey Maguire spider man), killing him off was a risky move, people moaning about them killing off a favourite there's is a good thing cuz it's so gutwrenching, imagine if I complained Tony stark died cuz I liked his character Leia (RIP Carrie btw) was given more to do in episode 9, saving her son and proving she felt 0 hatred to him even though he killed Han, plus legends fans (and non legends fans like me) get an expansion of her character as she was trained as a jedi, in a way further representing Rey taking the name skywalker, people who say episode 9 fixed episode 8 conveniently don't talk about leias consistent love for ben Luke I think you've covered better than I could - but people change overtime as episode 8 is 30 years after episode 7, and if he was the skywalker who destroyed everything and saved everyone then he would be a Mary sue, and people would hate him for that The only characters from previous movies I think were ruined later were Anakin , obi-wan and yoda in the prequels (but both clone wars shows fix him) Great vid

People do not understand that converting a person to the Light in an afternoon is not the same is doing the same thing to a person for 20 years. It's draining and it can change you drastically, especially if after that much time, you fail. Luke's character arc development portrayal ages like fine wine. The ST also had the benefit of doing that better than how Vader's change was done in the OT.

The sequels really ruined the iconic original OT trio: -Leia: It is true that more than ruined, Leia was rather wasted. In TFA, she only appears a few times from the second half, the most "memorable" thing she did here being her hug with Rey (a complete stranger to her) instead of with poor Chewie after Han's death. In TLJ Leia should have died during the destruction of the ship's bridge at the beginning, but instead we get the horrible Force flight scene. After this she spends most of the movie in a coma and, apart from the reunion scene with Luke, she still does nothing worth remembering. I think it goes without saying that in ROS they should have omitted the character (probably with an off-screen death) instead of "resurrecting" Carrie Fisher with that horrible use of deleted material that it doesn't feel natural or believable at all. Also, the fact that Leia finally died only because Rey impaled Kylo was a terrible writing decision. -Han: I have no problem with Han and Leia having a crisis and breaking apart for a while, as long as they get back together in the end. However, I in no way buy the excuse that he was "coping with what happened with Ben" at the time of justifying his return to smuggling. There is no reason why Han would decide to become a criminal again within the same government he helped create, not to mention that Han certainly hated being a smuggler in the OT, having that profession simply to survive. Leaving aside the fact that Han preferred to abandon everything before going to find his son, if what he needed to overcome the "disappearance" of Ben was action, why not help the New Republic or going to work with Lando? It's just ridiculous that Han would go back to being a criminal after the development he acquired in OT, no matter what bad things happen to him. Plus, he deserved a much more epic death than simply being killed for the benefit of Kylo Ren's incoherent character development. -Luke: Luke's case has already been talked about to death, so I'll be brief: Luke, after what he became after ROTJ, would never consider killing his nephew (don't use the excuse that it was an act of instinct, the film clearly shows Luke contemplating and consciously igniting his lightsaber). He would never run away like a coward rather than right his wrong and he would never say that the Jedi should disappear. Luke is too optimistic and wise for that shit. And no, don't say that "people change", because they never show us how Luke changed his mentality over the years.

I'm not the biggest fan of The Last Jedi, but I definitely agree with the portrayal of Luke. While he's definitely off-putting towards the beginning, he builds back towards his OT self by the end (also, I love that image you used for Luke). If he had never developed by the end, I would understand people's frustrations with him. Honestly, my disdain for The Last Jedi has nothing to do with Luke, Kylo, Rey, etc. In fact, that's the part of the movie I actually enjoyed. It's everything else that gets to me, namely the fact that most of the movie is the First Order and Resistance being at a standstill in space with not much happening, not to mention the failed mission with Finn and Rose. Rose as a character was a mistake, and Finn was done so dirty being paired up with her. I mean, that's not the only thing wrong with Finn post-The Force Awakens, but... 🤷‍♂️ While I'm on the subject, it's a similar reason why I felt Rise of Skywalker was a flop: most of the movie was Rey trying to find this wayfinder, only for Kylo to crush it as soon as she finds it. But most of what happened after, I thoroughly enjoyed.

I think my problem with the OT characters and them “being ruined“ isn’t that they’re necessarily poorly written I just think a lot of the character development that we see was done either offscreen or rushed. I can definitely understand why Luke was disillusioned but at the same time we never really got to see that type of Luke before he became disillusioned with the Jedi teachings(or at least not enough). Consequently it always left a sour taste in my mouth. I also didn’t like the way Han and Luke died but that’s just my personal opinion. I understand they couldn’t do much for Carrie Fisher considering the unfortunate circumstances that they were dealing with. however,sometimes I feel like they weren’t given the characters we all love the development that they needed. to me it felt like at the end of the day most of the weight of that task fell on the audience having to infer little details or turn to amazing videos like this one. But don’t get me wrong I don’t necessarily think the The characters were ruined simply because they’re different from how we know them. I just feel like the progression towards the more cynical parts of them or maybe even lighthearted nature should’ve been explored more before killing them off. That being said great video as always it really did give me some things to think about.

Wow! Thank you for this video! I've always felt that Luke Skywalker's portrayal of someone who has lost their way very real. In my 20s I was an idealist, a romantic, and felt anything was possible. In my 40s I'm lost, depressed, and feel like everything I ever believed was a lie. So I get Luke. It makes him real. It's only the galaxy that sees him as a legend. However, like legends do, he found a way to believe in something again. He helped make a difference.

I think the best way I can narrow it down for Luke specifically is that we left off at a point where he essentially was the perfect optimist, I don't really have a problem with it and I see it as a wonderful growth for his character in TLJ, but I think a lot of disappointed fans see him as just this "always doing the right thing" character because like I just said that's where we left off with him. But here's the thing you're basing that characteristic on one movie in the OT. he didn't really care for anybody else besides his aunt and uncle. By the end of ANH he's a fully fledged hero of the rebellion. ESB brings him down to a More grounded sense of reality. Yes he's optimistic but the film emphasizes that even Luke himself can let his passion/instinct blind his judgment. Yes it's great that he wants to go save everyone but he's not really aware of any opposing danger at that point in time, acting solely on his instincts rather than come up with a real plan. Similarly he did the same thing with ben, letting those quick instincts take hold blinding his judgment, because of course that's how we was taught to think by Yoda and obi- wan.

Anyone would tell you undermining another's trauma is foolish, because they would say everyone suffers differently. However, when it happens to our heroes, some fans expect that they brush off the trauma and go back to doing what we love about them.I feel like the sequel trilogy is the perfect aftermath from the original trilogy showing life still happens and people struggle and go through trauma and people rise up to the call. If anything I've learned in my own experiences is that just because you got a victory in one case, doesn't mean you're going to have a victory always and remain the same person you were years ago. The sequel trilogy is about the main trio struggling to pass the mantle to an unfinished war. We see Han Solo reverts back to smuggling, because he feels guilty for agreeing with Leia to have Luke train Ben. In Ben's eyes that can easily be seen as a form of abandonment when Han Solo doesn't know how to raise a child strong with the force. Leia reverts back to being a leader for a rebellion, because she's dealing with the new Republic not wanting to fight against an elusive threat. Luke reverts back to his ways arguably to his farmer ways for acting on his instincts as the Jedi taught him and inevitably he caused another Jedi purge. By the end of their struggles, they all each individually strive to call Ben solo back to the light side of the force and inspire the resistance to fight and finish the war.

On a purely conceptual level, there wasn't one correct way to take Luke. Having confident and hopeful Luke or a Luke who has given up are both valid ways to take the character. One keeps him as the great character he was and the other gives opportunity to explore and further develop. I think the sequels could have taken either of these and it would have been good, as long as they execute it well. I'm still not fully sure how I feel about Rian's execution of lost Luke (it's not as bad as people say, but I think there are a few issues), but there have been many people who point out problems with it's execution. If you took the other approach, you would have to make sure Luke doesn't feel one-note and boring. To say that a lost Luke ruins the character is inaccurate (especially if he is redeemed in the end), but it is a valid argument if you feel the execution ruins it. But execution is a whole other debate...

People wanted ST Luke to be like OT Luke, but anyone paying attention to the formula of the Star Wars movies would have known that they were going to make ST Luke more like OT Obi-Wan or OT Yoda, which they did. However, unlike Obi-Wan and Yoda, they gave Luke an actual character arc and story of his own to go through. Honestly, they probably gave us more of Luke Skywalker than George Lucas' sequel trilogy would have.

While the sequels did a good job justifying these changes, I'm still a little disappointed that Han and Leia just became older versions of who they used to be. Leia is still the same rebel leader and Han is still the same smuggler. It feels like this was done to give fans something familiar (the same reason why episode 7 is so similar to episode 4). Instead of evolving these iconic characters, they were kept as "recognizable" as possible. That's why I love what they did with Luke.

And Luke, at least, was very poorly utilized. There is so much more that they could have done with him. He just wouldn't have been a hermit for that long. It's like the complete opposite of what a Jedi would do, especially THE Jedi. And him just dying at the end from projecting too hard? Lol. The son of the chosen one? @@verbalkint4258 I was not talking about Luke. I was talking about the moral message of all Star Wars, inluding the Last Jedi, which actually condems Luke's apathy. But if you want to talk about Luke, let's do this. My friend you are reading this scene backwards. You are saying that Luke would not kill anyone in their sleep? I AGREE. Luke exactly DID NOT do that. The only thing that happened there was that Luke was * tempted * by the darkside to do the deed, but he resisted. Luke is an experienced warrior, a great Jedi Master, and a good person at heart, he never * intended * to kill Ben. That he was tempted so much it took him 10 seconds to snap out of it does not mean he had weak character. It means only that what he saw was so terrifying that he forgot what he stood for. The temptation was so great even the Jedi Master found it difficult to resist it. By comparison in ROTJ he almost killed Vader - the person he was trying to save - exactly because he tried to protect his sister. This impulsiveness is very in line with Luke's character. Except, in ROTJ he had to pummel Vader out and cut his hand off before he snapped out of it. Here, he just ignited his lightsaber. The genius of this scene is that it mirrors the response of haters (not you - as far as I know, you are a critic, not a hater) to the Last Jedi. Haters - claiming that Luke is destroyed - jumped to protect what they loved - Star Wars - and in doing so used all the hate of the universe against Rian Johnson, the cast, disney and so on. In other words, they were tempted by righteous anger to do exactly the same thing that turns a person to the dark side. So, in a similar situation they failed the test and they would have killed Ben to protect what they believed was good. For all they talk about loving the Jedi they failed to learn the simple lesson of all Star Wars: being a hateful prick is a path to misery. Also, why Luke is old and depressed. You know, there is one quote by Joseph Campbell - the person who inspired George Lucase to create Star Wars - which fits the situation of Luke in TLJ: "Freud stresses in his writings the passages and difficulties of the first half of the human cycle of life - those of our infancy and adolescence, when our sun is mounting towards its zenith. C.G. Jung, on the other hand, has emphasized the crises of the second portion - when in order to advance the shining sphere must submit to descend and disappear, at last into the night-womb of the grave". - "The hero with a thousand faces", p. 8. You even have twin sunset at the end of Luke's life. I think Rian Johnson understood this truth profoundly, and hence the portrayal of Luke in TLJ.
