Hoyt's mother, Mae Axton, co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel", Elvis Presley's first big hit (1956) on the RCA label. Hoyt also wrote "Never Been to Spain" another 3-Dog Night hit. He's written several songs that became hit recordings for other artists. Hoyt, himself, was arguably the most vocally powerful singer of Folk and Folk-Blues in the 60s and 70s.

I was around when this came out and honestly, back then, we didn't wonder or care what color the singers were, either we liked the song or we didn't. We listened to music for the music, not for who sang it. We listened to black, white, native american, straight, gay, male or female, because we liked the song.

They didn't write, they were great at taking unknown songs from other artists and turning them into hits, the world's greatest cover band. Tons of great music, always fun, too. Shambala, Eli's Comin', Mama Told Me Not To Come, Never Been To Spain are just a few of my favorites.

Hoyt Axton was the writer, and he was a good singer & actor. His mother was a very well known songwriter Mae Axton, and even wrote Elvis’ hit “Heartbreak Hotel”. They hold a record for the only mother and son who have ever written No.1 songs.

Blue eyed soul you know. I grew up in the 70s and the R&B scene along with Motown was exploding on the popular music scene. Occasionally, white dudes actually had soul. It was all good; we loved the great music coming from everywhere. Still do!

I saw these guys in concert about 8 years ago. And they were AMAZING! Sounded unbelievably great after all these years. Not offended at all by your comments ... definitely has a churchy, black vibe ... and sounds great! They have several other songs worth a listen ... One is really good, Never Been to Spain is good, Black & White is a song about race and not in a preachy way ... just great music.

Saw this band in Miami before they released their first album. Never heard of them. They weren't the headlining band, and I can't remember who was. It didn't matter because these guys just blew everyone away. Three Dog Night was a huge band as far as members, and were so good I was shocked. All I remember saying was "Who Are These Guys?. All three singers have passed away, but these guys ruled the radio stations back in the day.

Another album that my parents had in the early 70's when I was growing up; remember being around 6 years old, the "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog!!" got my attention! "ONE" is also an excellent cover done by Three Dog Night. Mug, we lived in the Bronx then, and yes, it made me think of church music; my Dad was a Deacon at our church, which was equally one third Puerto Rican and one third white; our Reverend was white, and the Reverend now is black. I LOVED church!

AM Radio monster in the 70's. 3 dog night always reminded me of the Doobie Brothers in a way. I bought this 45 at Woolworth's when I was about 10 years old and loved it then. I grew up in a White southern baptist church and we got up on our feet clapped and raised our hands to the Lord too. 😊 Southern Pentecostal churches are also known for their rather rambunctious worship. But of course we did like a good Introspective "traditional" hymn every now and then.

Most , not all , but most early rock and roll came from southern gospel sounds and influence .. Elvis Presley , buddy holly and Jerry Lee Lewis are examples. Axten was a country singer so blues / gospel where an influence were a good guess. The whole record album was great , you should dive in to more of Three dog night :) I agree with your feelings on this one , great reaction love your channel.

I was five or six years old when this song came out. I loved it. It was a fun song. So my perspective was formed on a different level than it would be now as an adult. I see your perspective and it makes sense. Three dog night have a variety of styles of music which is one of the reasons I like them so much. They weren't stuck with one type of sound to define tbem. 55 years later and I can still sing this song word for word.. You should listen to the whole album.

This was written by Hoyt Axton I believe. They didn’t write their songs as a rule but they were smart as hell about the songs they selected to sing!! They have had around 12 number one hits. You need to do Black and White and Mama Told Me Not To Come (fun and upbeat tune)!!

Joy To The World was written by Hoyt Axton , a fantastic singer in his own right. You should check out "Della nd the Dealer" and "Speed Trap". BTW Hoyt's mother wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis. To my knowledge Three Dog Night has no original music in their catalogue. Most of what they did were covers. The attraction was in the arrangements and the versatility of the members.

How sad that our country has allowed the young to be musically segregated. The sixties and seventies was all about mixing influences and embracing great music . Music was our church and if it moved you - that’s it you’re good. So many Black reactors are so shocked at the music being soulful or funky if they are white it really kind of disheartening.
