On display at RAF Snaith museum is a Bristol Hercules engine, one of two engines that were fitted to the Halifax bombers that flew from RAF Snaith airfield, the other being the Rolls Royce Merlin V12.
This example is not from a Halifax but a post war Hastings and although they are the same basic engine there are differences, one being the exhaust setup.... So to make it look a little more Halifax and less Hastings the exhausts are coming off and this engine reveals some interesting secrets....

Never a waste of time. You're learning new things and I get the impression you're the type of bloke that likes to learn.

i would try stripping the cleanest cylinder first that way it should be the easiest, and you will have a good idea of how to do it.

Not actually cylinder heads but referred to as junk pistons. One thing that might penetrate is the red dye used for crack detection, it is made to penetrate the smallest cracks in metal. It's messy but will sometimes do the job. And of course a bit, or even a lot of heat usually helps. You could even try removing the studs though not sure if they may be stepped in diameter.

Yes, a junk piston, I do know the term but for simplicity I called it a cylinder head.... many people have never heard of a sleeve valve engine ! As for the removal of the junk piston on that top cylinder... had it easily come off the great, we could establish what caused the sleeve damage, more for curiosity because I have had a camera in each cylinder and they are all badly corroded and to try strip the engine would mean destroying parts to do so...so without 14 replacement cylinders, sleeves etc it will remain as a museum display in memory of those who flew from RAF Snaith during the war with the Hercules powered Halifax bombers....

THE strongest-penetrating lubricant would be to mix 50/50 a small quantity of 0-WS Toyota automatic transmission fluid with an equal part trichloroethane degreaser fluid. Sounds strange but it's the best by far. It actually sizzles while it is eating and wetting rust and aluminum corrosion!

If that were me Adi, I'd try to fill the top of the cylinder either just with diesel or a mixture of diesel and ATF. Just about a quarter of a pint and see if it holds it. If it pisses out of the exhaust port, then you at least know that the sleeve is not it it's right place. Plus thei insides will get some break free lubing. As for plan B, get two really thick pieces of angle iron and weld together to form a U chanel ( or see if you can source a bit of heavy U) Drill your holes and try again. You're hoping a bit on the strength of the spark plug threads in aluminium as the threads are not that course and don't have a great deal of engagement. It's either going to work or the threads will pull out of the holes. If you have a compressor handy then if you have an air hammer. Make up a tool with a slightly convex face like a planishing hammer and once you have the head set up and under as much tension as you can get it, go round on the top of the head, on top of the studs, and anywhere where you can without doing too much damage, and see if it will move with the shocking action. That's my two penneth worth! Look forward to the next one!

I wish I was you working on that and if I was you the engine would be covered in oil inside and out ever time I start work on it and every time I leave it for the day and of course it will get a bit smokey when you have to introduce heat and by the look of it you may have to

Never a waste of time mate! Looks like one bad pot took that engine out and it was deemed not worth saving, and dumped outside for a bit.

Actually it was more an engineering smell.... possibly an oil on the threads of the stud? Happens with many engines that bolts when removed release a distinct smell....
